New Rambo and Rhino Blankets

Years ago, the Rambos ran a little large. If your horse wore a 78” in most blankets (including Amigo and Rhino), the 75” Rambo would be the best fit. Is that still true of the Rambos? Thanks for letting me derail, OP!

This is certainly my experience, although I have only ever done Rambo.

Here are the measuring directions from Horseware. Center of chest to center of tail, and subtract 4".

My horses all go one size up for (most) other brands.

Honestly, I really don’t know. Previous horse wore a 75 Amigo, Weatherbeeta, Premier Equine, Shires, and Rambo. They all fit without any drastic variation.

Current horse wears those same blankets. He does have a 78 Amigo that fits him, and his bum hangs out of his 0g 75 Rambo a wee bit.

I did find the Rambo fly buster to run a bit large, or maybe it stretches a bit. Otherwise, I don’t size down for Rambo. Sometimes the fit is a tad generous, it not enough to make it ridiculous.

My Jeffers order indicates it shipped. Next up: see if it actually arrives and if so, with all appropriate liners of the correct size.
We will see if Mr Plump can still fit a 72 Rambo.
It’s dang cold out right now so I’m bundling up my crew.

I like the Rhino Hexstop very much so far- it’s on its third winter. My horse is very gentle on blankets so I can’t comment on how tough they are, but it seems more comfortable than other styles. Cleans up nicely and the fill hasn’t shifted or bunched up. It’s lightweight for being a 250g blanket, which is great for a senior horse. It fits well, too. He’s an 81 and it fits like the older 81s in his wardrobe. Many newer 81s are too long for him, interestingly (long as in from shoulder to tail). I’ve been buying Horseware blankets (Amigo, Rhino, Rambo) for over two decades. The newer Wugs and a newish Supreme are all longer than older versions of the same blankets and a 78 would probably fit him better. It’s so frustrating. But the Rhino is true to his usual size.

Did you say lightweight???

And what bodytype is your horse?

Really appreciate such a thorough review and all your Horsware experience too.

He’s a 16.1h Thoroughbred. Long body, big hip, good-sized shoulder. He weighed about 1,280 pounds on a scale when he was younger but he’s leaner than that now that he’s PPID and is turning 29 next month. He doesn’t love wearing blankets so I know he appreciates when they’re not heavy in weight. This Rhino feels lighter in weight than similar Rambos. I haven’t tested how waterproof it is since he usually wears it in colder weather but I like the blanket overall.

I don’t think there’s a full size difference if you compare similar cuts/closure styles at least. My guys fit well into 81 Rambo. 81 Amigo runs slightly shorter in that there’s potentially a little more butt cheek exposure but not a full size difference. I have not noticed much difference in the drop between the lines on my rounder guys, but the fit around can vary depending on if you’ve got leg arches, etc.

Fly sheets for Rambo tend to run up to a full size large, but not the turnouts or stable clothes in my experience. Amigo stable clothes used to run pretty true to size but now are a size small in my experience (my guys who previously wore 78 and 81 in Amigo insulator now wear 81 and 84 in the new combo liner/stable blanket, and the 84 does not stick out at all under an 81 Rambo turnout).

Jeffers sent me an email that the Duo Force is back in stock. LOL. Unsubscribe!

I know this thread is Horseware related, but on blankets… has anybody used Chicks house line? Are they any good?

I bought one the winter before last for my young horse because I wanted cheap and functional. Mostly because he’d probably outgrow it in 2 days due to being a long yearling at the time. For the price, I was impressed with the quality. I got their higher denier one, and the hardware was decent too. I can’t recall what the fit was like, but it fit him at the time (he was weird shaped and probably a bit narrow). I think it got wet maybe once or twice and I don’t recall leakage. I sold it when winter was over since he outgrew it. Not a terrible blanket considering the price at the time.

Chicks Saddlery?

Yes. Or even Big D’s house brand.

Chicks doesn’t have their “own” house brand, but are you talking about the Rugged Ride blankets they carry? Or the Showman?

I live local to Chicks and have picked up a handful of Rugged Ride blankets over the years. They are “fine.” You get what you pay for: sometimes the fit is wonky/inconsistent, but I’ve had far worse through some more respected brands (Like Weathabeeta or Schneiders). They’ve been waterproof. They’ve held up, but my herd is pretty easy on blankets. The longest I used one was for my landlord’s donkey over several seasons a few years ago. My donkey currently has one of the Rugged Ride rubber ducky no fill sheets, and no complaints with waterproofing so far.

Yeah, mine was a Rugged Ride from Chick’s. 1680D and it was on sale. So it was fine for the price.

Big D’s Country Pride Arctic Shield 1680D blankets seem ok. I ordered one but returned it because because I got the size wrong. The return was quick and easy. The blanket seemed decent, but can’t comment on the fit and how it holds up.

I dabbled into “cheap blankets” when my horse was between ages 1 and 3. I still prefer Horseware, but there’s other stuff out there that will do the job.

Jeffers has a UPS tracking number and it should be delivered this week.

I am baffled and confused as to how the liners would be different sizes that some have experienced, given the packaging Horseware does especially for Rambos.

I don’t order much from them but so far they have been responsive.

I didn’t see anyone report that they got liners that were a different size than the blanket itself?

The only liner issue I can recall in this thread is mine: the 100g liner was absent.

They also shipped entirely the wrong size set. Twice!

Then the blanket that was the right size (but was missing the liner) fit quite a bit smaller than expected.

Lots of people never got their stuff and refunds were slow to come.

I think that sums up all the problems we’ve all seen with these, lol.

Gotcha. There were a lot of posts so I probably read it wrong.

My Rhino Pony Plus 100 and Rambo Supreme 50 showed up.

The Rhino PP is a great fit on Honcho Pony and worth every dollar it costs over the Amigo Pony Plus line just for the V neck closure. So much easier on my hands and fit seems more comfortable on the pony.

The Supreme feels like excellent quality and I like the three step closure at the chest similar to my Busse blanket. I did get the 81” instead of my horse’s usual 84”. For my horse that is between sizes, I would not say that the Rambo fits larger than other lines or even brands. True to size IMO. He’s got a bit of butt sticking out in the Rambo. The tail flap is very generous though and covers everything. My horse wears a neck cover a size smaller than what’s usually recommended for his blanket size and as per the Horseware size chart the 81” comes with the smaller neck cover versus sizes 84” and up. It’s still very generously sized imo.

Alas, the neck opening is not quite deep enough for my horse to be a perfect fit but I’ve decided to keep it regardless as I need something reliably waterproof for this horse and I like the guarantee of the Rambo. I do like the concept of the safety surcingles. I will likely try an Optimo for this horse next.
