Nice Dogtags and Collar Reccomendations

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if you could help me out.

My Aunt recently got married (whoo!) and being a broke college student I couldn’t afford to really give her or her new husband a wedding gift :frowning:

So I was thinking… they have a dog who they consider their “child” and I was thinking maybe getting something for her (and ordering a gift basket of dog treats or something) in lieu of a wedding gift to them (slash holiday present).

Ruby the dog is a chocolate lab who my Aunt’s husband hunts with. She’s my Aunt’s running buddy so she’s a fairly active dog.

I was thinking Fetching Tags for a dogtag but I’m open to other suggestions (and collar suggestions and dog treats suggestions too!).

Or hell something else dog-related that would be appropriate.

Love Quillin!

Um, I’m voting “No” on a gift for a dog in lieu of a wedding gift. Unless they’re Jewish, I would get them a Christmas tree ornament to celebrate “our first Christmas” even if they’ve been together (unmarried) for awhile.

If they are Jewish, I would still give them something to celebrate their union. Like a picture frame with the date of the wedding.

Seriously, you can spend very little on either one, and less than a basket of dog treats and collars.

Knowing how dog-crazy my Aunt and her husband are about their dog it would actually be considered thoughtful if I gave them something with their dog in mind (the rest of my family at large are not animal people at all).

And they have more picture frames of the two of than I can shake a stick at.

So I’m just looking for dog-related and inspired gifts. But thank you.

Here is where we get our dog collars, but they are more the functional part, not like the fancy ones:

We get our phone number embroidered and so if the dog is lost, the number should be with the dog.
Tags can be lost.

Now for fancy leather collars, there are many places for those, even pretty western rawhide braided ones at Guitron:

Paco dog collars are expensive but have good reviews. I think I saw them mentioned on the Brays of Our Lives blog.

Was just talking about it on another thread but my vote’s for Paco Collars for the collar. They start out stiff but the leather ends up SO soft, mine are used abused and then some and still look great. Plus, you can get a Fetching Tags plate put on their collars.

I can’t say enough about them and their service.

I have 4 Fetching Tags (3 regulars and a fat brass) and they are gorgeous, I get nothing but compliments. Love the quality and the look.

Don’t waste your time with Red Dingo…I have a few from them and apart from being cute from the front, they look terrible and scratch easily on the back.

Collarmania makes cute collars that are a tad more affordable.

If you can afford it, go with a Double Agent collar (from Paco)—it’s got built-in Fetching Tags and no jangle! My chihuahua wears a small Double Agent and my Aussie wears a large simple-two-tone from Paco with a riveted-on Fetching Tag in Double Agent style and I cannot bear the thought of going back to a jingle-jingle-jingle-jingle dangly tag again.

Of course, I must be honest and admit that I got these things for free (both Paco and Fetching are sponsors of my mule blog) but I’d love both companies even if they weren’t so good to me.

P.S. regarding the durability of Paco Collars—mine spent a season outside on a goat and now it’s back on my dog, looking better than new.

That flat black spot between the brown strips and the buckle holes is where I riveted his tag, and it looks very nice.

^ to add to that, they are pricy–I won my first one in a contest. BUT, I was so sold on the quality that I have added more Paco’s and tags to my family because of it. They made a believer out of me for sure.

Another vote for Paco collars - not only are they really well made, there is nothing else quite like them out there. Very unique and will last a lifetime!

My favorite tags are from Good Dog Tags - light aluminum tags that are super cute. http://mygooddogtags.com/

I love thenoseydog.com Their Kenyan beaded collection is really nice.

I’ve had this one for a year and it has really held up well. My Dobe girl swims in it and I just clean it with my normal leather cleaner. Can’t beat the price and it looks really great on her. She’s a red Dobe so about the same color as a chocolate lab and it’s a nice color for her.

I also like Clever with Leather. You can get a name plate attached to the collar. They have plain collars and also padded collars. I think the prices are pretty reasonable.
Good luck.

I LOVE those beaded collars! Ack! I wonder how well they’d hold up to real dog use…ohhhh how cute.

I’m a little surprised the paco collars appear to have rough out leather on the inside? My Quillin collars have smooth, finished leather on the inside. What I have–the raised collars with a plate–are not available on the website, although they used to be, but you can still order them if you call. Here is a rather poor picture of one of my collars.

I’m so excited to be getting two fetching tags for Christmas this year! The simple name and number ones are really nice on their own but if you could come up with a tag line for the dog that would be even better! That is however, as I’m finding out now, the hardest part by far!

I’ll second Collar Mania collars. I have… More than I’d like to admit  the oil cloth and laminated cotton ones have held up really well for the perpetually muddy schnoodle who wears them, and the colors still look good. One feature I just love (and have mentioned it before- if I sound like a broken record, sorry!) Is if you click yes to ‘my dog wears tags’ on the order form, she sews on a tiny tag d-ring so you don’t have to kill your fingers trying to get a tiny tag keyring around the thick leash clip-ring.
Ordering from her site can be overwhelming, with all the different fabric galleries. I’d recommend making a detailed list of fabric number, gallery number it is in, and a description of the fabric… Sounds obsessive, but there are hundreds of choices between all the fabric types and it’s much easier to keep track of what you like!
(If it’s a list for your own dog, yanno in future instances, it’s nice to have that list saved in case she puts on a sale weekend sale!)

Would love to hear what you decide with!

It is unfinished on the inside but isn’t rough at all. My bald girl wears a single lined paco collar and has outrageously sensitive skin…it doesn’t bother her.

@Simke–that quillin collar is really pretty and classy. I like it.

They look even better when they’re clean, irken!

That collar is perhaps 6 years old or so, and it’s just an all the time collar. They hold up incredibly well. The only time it comes off is for baths or for agility class (where we have to wear a quick release.) It was, IIRC, about $60. My dogs get one when they turn a year old

My issue with the unfinished inside on the Paco’s isn’t a sensitive skin issue, but that is a good point. The Quillin’s just seem to be better crafted, with the two pieces of leather, smooth side out for both inside and outside.

Etsy has some really nice handmade artistic and very good quality dog tags, for surprisingly affordable prices.
