I have caught a few hunter rounds and the riders were not appointed with gloves. Why?

They arenāt appointments classes, and hunters are judged on the horses, not riders. Some riders believe that gloves interfere with their feel on the reins, and elect not to wear them.
They just didnt want to wear gloves? You donāt HAVE to.
I know a few pros who donāt like riding with gloves. They donāt like the feel of it.
I prefer not to wear gloves, unless Iām riding my greenie when she had the habit of trying to pull the reins through my hands (and I would still wear them now in case that flared back up). Or alternatively, when itās frickenā freezinā, which is nearly upon me.
And personally, I donāt think a rider with gloves paints any prettier of a picture than a rider without.
Unless I am in an equitation class I do not wear gloves. They interfere (Most likely just mentally) with my feel of the horse and I ride better without them

Just curious - are they required in eq classes in the States, or is it just the āthing to doā?
Not required in any class. But they will help hide bad hands. I hate them and only wear them when it is cold.
I believe they are required in Appointments or Corinthian classes. (where you also have to have a pair of white or yellow string gloves peeking out from under your billets.)

Iām not sure that specs for either of those classes are even in the current rule book LOL
The only recent time Iāve sent formal hunting attire was in a side saddle class.
Well, I was around a long time ago- in the days of outside courses and before shadbelliesā¦

Not required by anyone but my trainer
Way back when we wore white or canary string glovesā¦white is EQ classes was considered correct. So glad that trend ended. They sure made bad hands stand out and made every move noticeable. I think no gloves can have a similiar effect. They certainly are not required and many hate the feel. I like gloves myself but it is all personal choice. I do like the finished look of gloves.
For the record, it is somewhat unusual to see a male rider wear gloves. Not usually frowned upon in any way.
Daughter forgot her gloves for an eq class once-she won but the judge did make the comment to her that she should be wearing gloves for that class. (never forgot them again!) So I imagine though not a rule, it could lose you a few points!
Bare hands always catch my eye in the show ring. I think it takes away from the formal polished look.
While a lack of gloves may draw my attention to a riderās hands, unless they are ābadā hands, it will not mean lost points. If they are great hands, it may earn them a few.
But I would hope I might notice anyway, gloves or no gloves.

Now I think thatās absolutely absurd. If wearing gloves isnāt a requirement, a judge shouldnāt be saying that she ought to be wearing them. It would be like a hunter judge telling a rider she ought to be using a standing martingale for no other reason than to ācompleteā the look.
Or like saying you have to wear a belt. A finished look maybe but not required.
Really? I would never go into a round without gloves on, I donāt even school without gloves on! I would feel naked with them, I guess.
