Non-horsey Olympics watchers - your favorite remarks/questions

So in a way it is a great ambassador / education opportunity …

… on the other hand I am trying to see how Chris Burton gets such beautiful dressage out of a horse, while being asked “are horses native to North America?” …
… uh …

Share the best ones you’ve heard.

Favorites from this living room, during eventing dressage …

“All the horses are brown. Is that a requirement?”

“Oh, that one is white! What does it mean that one horse is white?”

(in dressage) “Hey that one is going faster than the last one! Is that good? Will he win?”

(cross-country) “Whose fault was that - the horse or the rider?”

“What is this, like, Horse Ballet?”

I have never heard a harder guffaw from the significant other than when a rider fell on XC and their air vest detonated. SO was happy they were ok, but giggled every time he saw the rider in the air vest.

“Why does that horse move differently than all the rest? His legs are so flippy!”- About a very expressive canter on XC.

“I would also wear a monocle if I rode dressage.”

Ha! I think I know which horse this is! I was calling it “Spaghetti Legs”!

I got my co-workers to watch Valegro do the freestyle at the last Olympics.

Co-Worker: “Cool! So when does he get to jump the little white fences?”

Had to explain that was the dressage arena, heaven forbid anyone jump that!

On a similar note, was watching the cross country yesterday with my boyfriend. He has been riding and learning about horses for a while now, so he had most of it down. But he came out with this gem when he saw all the gray horses:

“Only rich people must own white horses, that way they can have someone else keep them clean for them!”

He is also a Marvel fan, so he loved Alice Naber-Lozeman’s horse “Peter Parker”

Where are the cows?

For the win!!!

I do wish the NBC commentators would stop referring to Charisma as “she.” That’s at least twice now.

There was a family with young children sitting near us during the eventing dressage in Atlanta. They were local and just wanted to attend some Olympic event and chose this one because it was relatively close to where they lived, inexpensive, and manageable with the kids. They asked us some questions about the competition, but also asked “if it was a requirement for all the horses to be brown.” Seems silly, but most of them were. So we had a nice discussion of genetics and dominant traits.

“Why do some of the horses have paint on their legs and bodies?”
I got to explain XC grease. I was happy it was a legit question!

I have to agree that only rich people should have grey/white horses! I’ve had only one and it was too much work! ROFLOL For some reason, my Appies have always kept the white parts of their anatomy clean, but my grey TB mare used her manure for a pillow most of the time - especially the night before a show.

Ear bonnets.

Best quote I’ve read! It should be someone’s signature line.

This one is horsey (so the converse of OPs intent) but I thought hilarious. Speaking of the “gap” in talent between the top event riders “you couldn’t put a cigarette paper between them” (from Mike Tucker yesterday)

I pretty much made my DH watch a replay of Charlotte’s and Valegros’s test from Thursday. His comment: Does she have to parallel park him too?

It’s Olympics week at work (obviously) so we are doing minute to win it games, and all the TV’s are showing various Olympic events–so clearly, I have gotten the one by my set of cubes on the Equestrian events every day.

It has actually been really cool since I’m the office horse lady, a lot of people I don’t normally talk to have come over to ask questions, most of which I thought were pretty good, but I do work in the animal nutrition industry, so a lot of people have an Ag background. Have gotten questions on the quarantine process, how the transport them (on ships? lol), the differences between the sports, and some on the age diversity of riders.

Side note: Best week ever getting to watch XC and SJ while at work from my desk and not even pretend to hide it!

Well, shared it in the other thread but Hans Miderhoud and Johnson’s test, I watched with a co-worker… he said “That horse moves like he’s very angry and about to kill you.”

Johnson is super expressive, I can see how it might seem violent.

My coworkers are excited to watch the horses do interpretive dance on Monday in the freestyle. The horses’ barn names are also of interest. It makes them seem more like the household pets people are familiar with when we talk about how Blueberry and Diddy are doing well, here’s a fun fact about Big Red, instead of complimenting Valegro and Verdades and so on.

Some of them have been very enthusiastic about learning the differences between disciplines. For them it was nice that eventing ran first. “If you like watching the horse do this, you might like to watch…”

Our poor broadband is making it very difficult to watch the grands prix online (only the freestyle on Monday will be aired on terrestrial TV here).

The TV was on while I was in another room, and my husband called out to me, “Come quickly, Carl Hester and Nip and Tucker are on!”
