Non Northern Dancer

Racing dummy here. I am curious about non-Native Dancer thoroughbreds and how popular they are. From what I have read Native Dancer is in about 75% of all thorougbred pedigrees. How successful (and sound) are the TB’s without his blood? And who are they?

ETA See I am a dummy! I meant Native Dancer.

I didn’t check the pedigree to confirm this, but I don’t think Cherokee Run has any Native Dancer. He earned $1.5M on the track and sired Chilukki, War Pass, Yonaguska, Zanjero, During, Kafwain, etc. Another one might be Include. He’s a Braod Brush o/o Stop The Music mare. Again, I’m not looking at the pedigrees, though, so I’d need to confirm.

The largest influence of Native Dancer is through Mr. Prospector (via Raise A Native), but you also have Alydar, Exclusive Native and Majestic Prince, Sharpen Up, as well as any of their daughters. My guess is the influence would be beyond the 75%, due to the Mr. P/Northern Dancer nick and is probably higher than 80 or 85%.

My old jumper I lost last year was Time for a Native, and he had a tattoo. I know it’s off topic but I think about him all the time.

I would say at this point it’s beyond the 90 percentile mark and getting closer to 100 with each passing year.
Look at the pedigrees of just about any horse racing on any given day any where in the world, it’s getting nigh on impossible to find one without Native D.

My mare doesn’t have any Native Dancer, Northern Dancer or Mr.P, wonder how they managed that one?

My “senior” stallion, Master Huntsman, is completely devoid of either ND or Mr. P blood and he and his produce are very sound – but bred for the sportmarket.

Here is a likely runner in this year’s KY Derby that has no NatD, Mr. P or ND:

Here is my new horse who while being sport bred has full siblings that raced: http://www.pedigreequery.com/clarion+code

Here is a Wall Street Journal (yes!) concerning the amount of inbreeding to Native Dancer. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120968356843561083.html?mod=sports

Here are today’s entries at Gulfstream. There are 86 horses entered in 9 races (including AE’s). Of that 86, a whopping 4 have no Native D in their pedigrees.

Um, he has Icecapade, who was a 3/4 to Northern Dancer, and a grandson of Native D.

I have a couple on the farm with no ND or Mr P… full brother and sister - sister’s pedigree Here. The mare had 20 starts 3-4-1, and retired sound. The colt may go to the track next year. They have another full sibling who is currently racing in LA, and doing well so far. Their sire retired sound after 38 starts, and his sire had 39 starts under his belt, and was euthanized at the grand old age of 28.

My little guy doesn’t have any of the Northern Dancer blood (at least that I can tell from Pedigree Query) and he was a reasonably successful runner until he bowed a tendon and came to me. Now he’s doing low-level eventing with a college student.

He’s extremely athletic and has a puppy-dog personality.

Non Native Dancer

They’re getting harder and harder to find, aren’t they… but I’ve got one! She didn’t race (through no fault of her own), but she’s going on 25 years old, sound as they come, still hits the trails and loves a good gallop, and the epitome of thoroughbred heart. The number of times she’s saved my ass far exceeds the amount she’s dropped me on it.

Native Dancer has left an influence, no doubt about it, but eventually, after enough time passes, it will be diluted not unlike the Darley Arabian et al.

My mare has Northern Dancer, but no Native Dancer/Mr P. I’m not entirely clear on who the OP is referring to since they have Northern in the subject, but talk about Native.

Anywho, here is her pedigree: http://www.pedigreequery.com/jewel+in+the+hills

I am also fostering an OTTB gelding that has no Mr. P/Native Dancer or Northern Dancer. He does, however, have Halo, The Axe, Blushing Groom and Caro. He should make a nice sporthorse prospect for someone. Here’s his pedigree: http://www.pedigreequery.com/shedroe+warrior

I don’t think it will become more diluted. Obviously, he will be harder to find within 5 generations of a pedigree, but I think there are so many sire decendants of him that his inbreeding coefficient will be higher for the average thoroughbred in 25 years. Especially now that it’s fashionable to linebreed/inbreed to Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector. Drvmb1ggl3’s Gulfstream stats tell the tale.

As Drvmb1ggl3 pointed out, if your horse has Northern Dancer in it’s pedigree, then it does have Native Dancer. Northern Dancer is out of the mare Natalma, who is by Native Dancer.

Dublin’s 5/8 TB and Paint. She has Native on both sides/Northern on one. Guess I’m just lucky!

Sorry for the confusion. I did mean Native Dancer but I could not change the thread title. What is the reason he was used so much? I know that he was a good racehorse. I am happy to see that there are horses out there without his blood to have that outcross.

A few stallions in Europe have no Native Dancer. Indian Ridge obviously is the first one that comes to my mind, but Highest Honor and Monsun are also ND free.

My old man is 25 and free of Native Dancer.
The huge breeding trend to the Northern Dancer/Mr. P lines came about long after he was foaled, I believe.

Pleasant Tap lacks Native Dancer; so does Siphon. Cetewayo has both Native Dancer and Northern Dancer on the bottom, but Roanoke has only one line to Native Dancer through Sea Bird. If I had money and a mare, I’d breed to Cetewayo or Roanoke.

I see. I’m used to looking at a 4 generation pedigree. Thanks!
