Noooo, one of my favorite horses got hurt. :frowning:

Grumpy Small Mouth

(that’s right, that is his name)

Anyone know anything this? Or know anything about this very game cutie?

http://www.equibase.com/static/chart/pdf/GG011816USA6.pdfl

I might even have pictures of Grumpy. I need to check my files.

Bummer about him being hurt. He just had one of those names, yaknow.

Ooooo, please p.m. me if you do. I only know him from the t.v. races but have admired him for a long time. I hope he can recover.

I wonder where the name comes from as it doesn’t seem to be in his pedigree. There is a link to a photo of him on this page, if anyone wants, click on the box next to his name.

Unless it’s really some obscure play on Pipette, Siphon, and Bad Seed, I don’t get it as a pedigree name. Maybe he was very cranky as a baby and had a little mouth?

Hope he’s all right!

Now I want to see a horse, maybe from the Storm Cat line called Grumpy Cat.

I believe he was named by the owners ( when Pete Miller trained him) grandkids after grandad himself “Grumpy Small Mouth” was their nickname for him.

He is on the CHRB vets list as “unsound” since being vanned off

Thanks all, thanks Wire. Well, certainly an interesting nickname for Grandpa there!

Now, dear GSM has a half sister named Grammy Big Mouth (bred by the same people)!

I do hope he’ll be o.k.

You know how sometimes you’d watch Ben’s Cat race and could see how he really just didn’t want to get beat and made that win happen? GSM was like that too.

Wire to Wire, is there a worse category than unsound?

“Unsound” can be a catch all when a horse makes the vet list. A horse could get vanned off like GSM did and be off from an a minor to a major issue, there’s just no way of knowing.

If you want to follow him and see if he works 5/8 to get off the vets list follow him on Equibase. If you don’t get any work notifications on him chances are it’s a serious problem.

You can also go to the California Horse Racing Board Stewards Minutes and when they post the minutes for the week he vanned off, read them and see if there’s any information on him in those. In that case no news is good news if their not listing him as euthanized.

He’s made $245,000. It’s too bad hes’s running as cheap as he is now. If he were mine he’d of been retired instead of being vanned off,but once their claimed or sold there’s nothing you can do unless you try to buy them back and do right by them.

Thanks again, Wire! (You are very knowledgeable, btw!)

I’ve been following GSM in my virtual stable for awhile. (Please let him show up there again.)

The minutes on that week are not out yet but I bookmarked the site and will certainly follow. That site certainly makes for some “entertaining” reading . I don’t mean the horse breakdown listings, of course, as that is just tragic. I mean the other stuff.

“It’s too bad hes’s running as cheap as he is now. If he were mine he’d of been retired instead of being vanned off.”

Oh, absolutely! Very tragic. Had I not been dealing with some huge injuries myself, I would have tried to find his people and seen if I could have given him a nice home, awhile ago. I feel horrible about that too. :frowning:

He was running cheap but, at least, sometimes he could still turn it on and kick as-.

On a different note, I do hope said Grandma and Grandpa had a good sense of humor regarding the monikers of their namesakes.

I only have the free Equibase account. I think to get to be able to watch the replay you need the paid account.

This is the link, though. It would be Golden Gates, January 18, race 6.

We watched the race online. He ran a super race, with a narrow finish to win in a photo. Looked like he possibly took a bad step right after the tape, and the jock was great—hopped off immediately. Hard to tell, but it could have been something behind. Anyway, the video stopped right after the jockey dismounted.

According to the infor on TB Predigree he has a 1/2 sister named Granny Big Mouth.

Oh my… Words fail…

The picture of him being led shows what a cute horse he is. How sad that he is running in bottom level claimers…

I knew the bright COTH slueths would find more info. Thanks so much Cindy!!! OK, now I can breathe easier (I think). I’m so glad to hear how the jockey handled it.

Yes, a very cute & gutsy horse indeed, LH!

Please get well GSM!

Grumpy Small Mouth (Frey, Kyle) This is from the Equibase page the OP linked to in post #1.

How would OP find out the full name of the jockey and the trainer?

Can we check and see if the jockey or trainer are on Facebook? She could message them, see how the horse is.

It’s on the equibase page:

http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Results.cfm?type=Horse&refno=8541008&registry=T

Jockey: Kyle Frey
Trainer: Salvador Naranjo
Owner: Gracia Naranjo

No death certificate has been submitted to the JC–don’t think whatever happened was bad enough for him to be humanely euthanised…

Would that have been submitted/listed and updated on Equibase already, Simkie, as it’s only been a few days? Just wondering, but good to hear that.

Oh dear, his jockey, who had won an Eclipse Award for outstanding apprentice in 2011, has had his share of injuries, too.

The nature of the beast that is the claiming horse game is to keep problems under wraps from anyone outside your own barn, hoping they’ll be someone else’s problem via a claim Although now here in California, claims are voided if a horse is deemed unsound after the race it is claimed out of,per the State or Track vet. Unfortunately some sore/unsound ones still get by occasionally.
Bottom line is that if GSM has any chance of making it back to the races, the connections are not going to be forthcoming with any information because-he’s a claiming horse. If he’s finished they"ll probably give him away.

Call the Racing Office at Golden Gate and ask for the trainers number. They usually have them and you don’t need to give any reason for wanting it

Hope you all get the information you seek!

Oh, I don’t think I’d feel comfortable asking the jockey or trainer as it not their position to give out information like that about their owner’s horse. (Does that sound right?)

I don’t want to bother any of his connections. I’m just glad to know there is a chance he might be o.k. I so wish I was in a position to offer him a home if he needed one but I’m not. But, . . . hmmm . . . maybe one of you are?

Thanks again, everyone, for the help!

The jockey, chances are wouldn’t know much anyway.

If any works show up on the him through Equibase that would be a good sign If it’s at least a 5/8 work that means they’re trying to get him off the vets list.
