Novice needs advices on naughty horse (We have a baby!)

Just returned from my first riding lesson today! It was really great fun! For me, and probably horse thought it was funny too, but he was an old getlemen and took it with pride. I’m looking for the next lesson now!

Awesome!! You look like you are having so much fun, and Puika does as well! Thanks so much for posting the pictures! For some reason, I feel like Puika has a look on his face now that says “I have a purpose now”. He seems to enjoy his job being ridden. I am so addicted to your stories, and cannot wait for you to post about your next adventure.

Wait, that’s not Puika! This is the most enjoyable thread to read… please keep us posted with lots of updates. You and your husband have been so kind and understanding to this horse that it seems he has quickly bonded with you and will always grateful. I love your stories and it is very interesting to read about someone in such a faraway place.

Please, do not get confused. (it is probably my poor English) In last set of pictures it is not Puika.
We only yesterday discovered that Puika enjoys riding, so today completely upset the whole thing by putting me on him would not be a clever thing indeed. And I wanted to start with something less extreme as bareback riding of the horse with unknown past. I really really love him and do not want make mistakes that he might pay for.

So I found a calm, “tourist level” horse awailablwe today for the first lesson, so in the last set of pictures, with me riding (hm, let’s be polite and call it like that  ) it is another horse, not Puika. But they have so much similar with our Puika.

Boss (it is horse’s name on today’s pictures) was owned by man, who had cancer, and he was holding on only because of the horse. Horse paid a hard price for his love - as owner was going from treatment to treatment, and was not ready to give horse away, he spent in box most of past 3 years - owned decided to give him away only past November so since then he is on recovery (horse, owner passed away 2 days after horse was given away).

Boss is 18 yo, very calm and well beheived, but not actually interested in great fun like our spoiled baby. (Puika feels and acts like he is 5, not older), and yesterday he really did not wanted to finish riding with peter - he was so happy that he wanted more and more. In comparison, just a light walk with me was about enough for Boss today.

He is in very good hands, and on different herbal treatments, and I’m sure he will get his zest of life back soon. He is living in a crowded barn along with 16 yo mare and a pony mare who is expecting on the first days of May, and some sheep and goats.

Maybe, only maybe we also found our goat baby as a further companion for Puika. There were a month old goat baby (The Saanen dairy goat mix), named Simona, who was born as a second of twins and not really liked by her mother, so she is used to humans more as well as all other animals, and already spents a lot of time under horse legs (she likes to sleep at night on the ram and plays hide and seek with two huge dogs during the day).

So it was really good day today. Puika will be ridden again tomorrow, but not by me, not yet, peter will try to establish him more before I will try to ride him (so far Peter needs my help so he tries to keep me safe and sound).

Doh! I’m sorry, my fault! I guess I was so happy for you I didn’t really pay attention to the details- like which horse it was!!

Ah Anna, but you are taking lessons…I knew you’d be hooked soon!!

Poor Boss, he looks like a very nice boy too

What a wonderful boy Puika was with Peter, I’m so excited to watch your progress!

I heard of you this weekend, Anna…at a wedding of all places.

I am so glad I found this post! I too would like to commend you! Well done!

But you do realize that you have been infected now–you are now a horse person! Soon, you’ll be going to town with hay in your hair and wearing muck boots!

Lovely progress thus far.

Sending you a PM with some book titles that might be available to you. Cheers![/QUOTE]

I must confess Anna, this was at my wedding! I told Buddy Roo what a wonderful, totally uplifting thread this was

Glad you found it BR!

I just read this thread today…
WOW, what a great story. And what wonderful response and suggestions from everyone.
Continued progress and fun for you, Anna!!!

I am so impressed at how your husband simply decided that Puika was ready, hopped on bareback (only knowing that he possibly was ridden 10 yrs ago) and rode him all over your village, walk, trot, even some canter! I think we here can be far too cautious sometimes and transmit our worries and fears to the horse. Most People I KNOW would never do that bareback and outside of an enclosed arena. I think you and your husband have very good intuitive horse sense and seem to understand what Puika is ready for. He looks like a lively, alert horse who loves to be doing a job. He is quite handsome and will only get more so with more muscle and fitness. He really is lovely!

The lessons on Boss are a great idea. That way, you will be much more experienced and comfortable before you ride Puika. Peter can ride him now until Puika is totally relaxed and used to being a riding horse again. Then, you will get to ride Puika too. It is best to progress slowly and steadily at this point. Puika is doing well, and if you got on and fell off before he is used to being a riding horse again, it could slow his progress. Boss looks quite sweet. He might make a good friend for Puika after your pasture is fenced.

Speak for yourself.

Ditto :D:D:D

Chill out, I was referring to my area and my circle of friends. Edited to make it clearer, jeez!

OMG! Must tell Puika that he is a subject of wedding gossips now. Our boy is famous!

So far KNOWLEDGE is not a keyword, UNDRESTANDING is. I feel really bad having an animal which I’m not sure about how I do understand him. That makes me really iritated and worried. I like to be sure to have that bond with my pets taht only by look into his eyes I would know how he feels and what he is thinking about. So far it is not going fast. But spending time in the box is helping a lot.
I wish he would be a bit smaller so we can let him inside the house to spend time with us like our dogs and cats
Next lesson I will take in sadle, but on my first lesson I wanted to get the bareback feeling on safe horse.
To learn basics of riding I will go probably in saddle, but to feel horse bareback is better.
What do you think about these bareback pads? I saw some even with stirrups on internet. Are they ok?
It would save us teaching horse to get used to saddle.

I don’t know that the bareback pads are very safe or comfortable on most horses. At least the old ones didn’t have any way for the stirrup to come off if you fell with your foot caught in the stirrup. On a quarterhorse with plenty of padding over the spine and low withers, it might be comfortable, but they are not padded enough for many horses. I think bareback may be better for right now. Puika probably will be fine with the saddle, if you can find one that is comfortable for him.

control

My suggestion is to gain control of the horse with lots of ground work. He needs to know you are the boss. Clinton Anderson has a great CD with suggestions for biting. If he respects you he won’t bite. Respect is won with lots of love, groundwork and time.

Anna,
As you get more comfortable on Boss, and if he is close to your house where you keep Puika, one day maybe you and Peter can go riding together. Peter can ride Puika, and you could ride Boss. That would be really fun for the two of you.
I told you that you were hooked!!! LOL:D:lol::lol:

It’s official----You are a Horse Person!!!:winkgrin::winkgrin:

Uff! This was a bit mad Sunday!
Crazyness started at the morning when we put him on chain on new patch with dry soil and a bit of short nice grass. It was nice patch and I went to the road end (about 200 metres away) to plant some chestnut trees in. Ten minutes later I hear steps, look back and here he comes - he pulled the chain post out and decided to see what I’m doing. Great! All what i need is 10 metres of heavy chain dragged through the garden where all little trees have been planted. Told him off, took him by halter and stood until Peter appeared with bridle. Took the chain off, gave Peter a knee and off they went.
After half hour of excercises peter rode horse back into the yard. Time to go in for some rest. Guess what horse did? Stood right at the gate where Peter is mounting him so Peter was able to get off really nicely and comfy. So far 1:1, being naughty by pulling out chain, being nice to stand in exactly right position to get off from him.
I took him back in box, he was angel, obedient and nice, he pulled his head down so I was able to take off the bridle, pat his head, gave him a kiss - angel.

An hour later second turn started. Got the horse out, he was great, went stright to gate with only one interruption - he wanted say hello to our car (tell me, you, horse whisperers, can horse be in love with car? He greets car with sweet phurr, phurr, gently leans a bit at it and licks it each time when he goes past it, very strange, there are many things that he would be able to say hello like tractor, his cart, fences and all sorts of things, but he does it only to our car).

So he said hello to car and stood in right position again at the gate. Peter went on, trapped his coat on gate and fell off the other side of the horse. Horse did not moved, stood with his front leg up until peter stood back again. He was praised, petted, and Peter went on again, and off they go. (Nothing happened to Peter, he just lost his glasses, they were found, no damages to glasses or peter). It was not horses fault at all, all peter’s, and by my opinion horse was just great at that situation.

They had a nice ride with a lot of turns, backwards and so on, and about ten steps sidewalking now! Then they returned, Puika again stood in right position, Peter off, and then peter decided to take him down to pastures for a bit of special groundwork. He told me to stay away, go inside and do not interrupt if I see something wrong.

They went down to pastures, peter let horse walk free. Puika went for a nice grass bits (good bye to our nice lawn, that’s for sure  ) Peter just sat on compost heap boards and had a cigarette. After it he called Puika and he come like an obedient dog. Peter took his rains and walked him. Then Peter fell off. On his knees. Let the rains off his hand. He went down completely and rolled a bit away on grass. Puika stood frozen, looked at him, then come and sniffed Peter.

Then Puika bent his front legs and kneeled down to Peter and with gentle phurr, phurr licked his neck first, then with his head tried to roll him over. Peter let him. Then started to talk with Puika, put his hands around Puika’s neck and Puika gently and very slowly lifted him up.

Peter hold reins with one hand, other hand on withers heavy and he let Puika walk him. Puika did it and took Peter very slowly directly to our doorstep.

I was not able to believe my eyes. Peter played the whole scenario of riding accident and Puika did it from this whole heart! He would not try do it better!

Then Peter waved me and I came out and walked Puika to stable. He was on his best beheivior, not any attempt to nip reins or anything.

For last two days he has stopped to nip at us, all he does is to get the rein or walking lead in his mouth and then he is happy. Even when riding, as far as he does something just right, peter praises him and pats his neck, and the next thing is - Puika is getting rein in his mouth and happy looking, like, I’m a good boy! It looks for me that it is not respect or naughtiness thing, it is something that makes him feel very contented. Like soother in baby’s mouth. When we shall be able to get him off it, I have no idea.

But one thing is for sure - Peter is seriously in love with Puika, he just can not stop praising him. Gentle, clever, trying to please… The only thing - overexctied like a youngster sometimes, but at 16 yo I hope he will outgrow this soon :D.

That was today’s report.

Sadly, Boss is about half hour drive from here, so to take Puika there or Boss here would be nearly impossible, but I feel that it will be serious fight next year if other suitable horse offer will come. Peter is into it! With full effort. He says that in 6 mo time Puika will be ideal dream horse, and then I can see discussion starting! This boy already keeps us on our tiptoes, and I do not think that we really need another horse for riding together.

I like it, it is great feeling, but I’m working full time already, we are living here in an old farmhouse with not so much modern facilities, we must to build anex for peter’s parents who are planning to move in in Autumn, so it will be more job for us (Peter’s parents are 88 and 78) and I really really want another dog - all our current dogs are rescues, but I want a St.Bernard puppy with good pedigree and return back on showground. With St. Bernards, not with horses.

But there is one really positive thing - after all (yesterday’s riding lesson and today’s jbs) my muscles ache so nicely! I can feel them growing! Thatš a great thing!

Anna, you guys are doing so wonderfully! Puika is just such a handsome boy and it sounds like he is really bonding with you and Peter and improving everyday. It’s so nice to hear your updates!
I love the photos!
I do hope you keep telling us about your adventures with the horse. It’s excellent that Peter is riding Puika now and that you are taking lessons!!!
I’m so happy for you both and for Puika! He looks so very happy in the photos where he is being ridden. You can tell he feels loved and contented.
Bravo!
