Off breed prospect - what would you choose?

This one looks GOOD!

at the risk of being offensive to people
a thin youngster like that doesn’t look like he needs to be carrying much weight yet. Especially very often or for very long. Just one thing to consider
(no offense please, i have NO IDEA your gender/size)

He doesn’t look thin to me, just typical young ASB, leggy and narrow.

yes, narrow. Not mature.

None taken - I take full responsibility for my health. I did post a pic earlier of myself on a same age/still narrow but shorter ASB that MIGHT grow to be ideal, but since 4 year olds are a crapshoot - some still grow, some top out, in all breeds, I passed. For this one, I’m not too big for him, but with any horse, would allow them to mature in their 4-6 year old years.

My ‘the thin man’ was pretty spindley for longer than most of my other horses. He was full height at 4 but narrow as all get0ut. I ground drove him and have just started gettin aboard once a week for about two 10min ‘rides’ with my coach. He has put an a LOT of breadth lately. I think(?) i can start doing little trail rides on him now
It’s like, once they stop growing up they start growing out

16 hand ASB is adorable!

I was hoping for this, but my guy is now 7, every inch of 17h, and still about six inches wide

I met my guy today!!! Just - we clicked. He was so much fancier in person and in motion than I imagined and I felt at home and happy - the proverbial clouds opened up as I rode him! I met a lot of awesome options along the way, so the good news is - there are nice horses out there. Good luck to everyone finding yours - I’m so happy to have mine!

Apologies (not really) to dredge up an older thread (CoTH even gives you a warning now, lol) but I do believe someone upthread was talking about reining/ranch-bred QH as dressage prospects. I happened upon this video and thought of this thread:

This guy, who I know nothing about, certainly rides like a man and is not riding in the traditional double bridle, more similar to the way PRE/Lusi are trained for their horse sports, but it’s a nice example of a horse demonstrating the upper level work in a breed-appropriate way. Are his gaits huge and fluid? No. Is his half pass extravagantly criss-crossy? Also no. But he also doesn’t look like a nightmare to ride and looks like he has a very professional outlook on life. More people need to buy and ride the horse they’ll have fun on.

Agree.

but he is only 4-5 years old and has not had the systematic training that produces these attributes. He has been taught / forced to tricks. I would snatch this lil punkin up. My last horse was a ranch bred QH and he always said “yes I will try” so easy in the canter so light to the aids. Never a sour day, he was my heart horse.

These guys are bred to do work and love to do it-- I think that’s part of the reason QH people start their horses so early and get away with it. I don’t love that he’s four either, but I also don’t think it’s fair to say that this horse is just doing “tricks.” He is appropriately over the back for his age and conformation and using his hindquarters well; I do agree more strength would improve his shoulder in and half pass. Plenty of dressage horses are exposed to the piaffe very young. It just continues to improve as they get stronger. I wasn’t trying to provide an example of the pinnacle of dressage that QH are capable of.

My point was pretty much exactly what you are saying-- this guy is cute and could be even better. I love a nice QH. They are so social and yet they take their job so seriously. (:

Say it again!

This is my advice to anyone who asks about horse shopping lol

I wonder what that QH is doing now. The video is not recent.

I couldn’t get into my old account so I made a new one just for this thread!

Anyway, I have a DHH/Morgan who is just lovely. He’s 6, will be 7 in April. I absolutely adore him and I wish there were more of this cross around! He was an auction pick up and I would buy 10 more of him if I could. It does take a bit of work to get him over the back but he’s got feet the size of salad plates and is full of nothing but try. His 5 year old year was nothing but teenage dirtbag nonsense but then one day he just grew up. Love him to bits!
