Official Tokyo Olympic Eventing Thread

On the fall of Jet Set, they talked about the delay affecting Andrew Hoy, and talked about the fall, and the horse going to the care center by trailer, but that’s all.

The Japanese rider before that who fell after the Fuji drop jump was fine, but it was cute that his horse just stood there, and the horse was looking at the rider like “I did fine, how did you end up down there?”

Reference to Shinto shrines. The one before the end gate

The problem was that commentator Moss didn’t know which one it was. I didn’t hear him try again with that fence name.

He was continuously incorrect about how many jumps were left when riders were near the end of the course. May not have been his fault, he may have been getting bad info … but on the other hand, he didn’t know the course he was commentating.

That’s why they had a guide with PICTURES;

I couldn’t stand Lucinda’s commentary during the regular dressage. I actually switched to our French language network because the commentary was so much better there.

I liked but didn’t love Lucinda’s commentary. I loved her as a rider. We are the same age, and when I first got interested, she was a STAR. For those too young to know, she is a former world champion and she won Badminton 6 times on 6 different horses. One year she was first and second. I think I would prefer to hear more of John, but she is very pleasant, and kind to the more challenged riders.

I heard on NBCSN that Jet Set had a ruptured ligament , and that was why the horse was euthanized.

Didn’t see the actual fall. I was watching but I muted the sound during all those commercials.

I didn’t see any of Boyd’s ride at all. So if they showed any of it , it wasn’t very much .

A bit disappointing.

But you can’t say that NBC favored American riders over all the rest.

But NBC is terrible at sports coverage.

I don’t why they keep bidding on the Olympics.
Every time they whine and cry that they lose money on it .

I wish ESPN would bid it on it . Sports is what they do. Hello …

But I did get to see some Equestrian. Hope the show jumping coverage is better.

New Zealand. Jessie Campbell said he horse’s tank was empty at 5 minutes. I thought watching that Jessie should have pulled up. I wonder if he will be OK for the horse inspection.

Y’all are so young!

I remember past (way long ago) Olympic coverage when there was only one TV station carrying it—no such thing as streaming—and you might have gotten lucky to see 10 minutes total of any equestrian coverage. Maybe a few minutes of dressage if the USA had a good day and in the eventing and show jumping? Mostly they showed the wrecks!

I do remember when Princess Anne competed—they gave it a bit more coverage.

I know, ‘OK Boomer’!

Not a Boomer here, but I remember when you had to order the VHS tapes if you wanted to watch more than whatever highlights they showed on the regular few minutes of TV broadcast.

I’ve been quite pleased with the coverage on www.nbcolympics.com.
Choose the sport, and watch the event in its entirety, either by live stream, or the replay.

Our US Dressage team was riding in the wee hours of the morning west coast time (at night in Japan), and thanks to NBC, the full replays are available.

I’m another one who adored Lucinda’s commentary (both for the pure dressage and XC). It was really great to hear her informed, expert assessment of things, and it was obvious that she was clearly cheering for all the horses and riders. At one point during the Pure Dressage, I ended up with the American commentators, who were annoying and distracting, I thought, compared to John and Lucinda.

After hearing the NBC coverage with another commentator, I loved Lucinda’s even more.

I was glad that they only showed the halt in the course, and not the horse being vanned off. I have had success with looking at the NBC Olympics feed to see the cross country, and to see the award ceremony for team dressage.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE it if we could still get DVDs of the big competitions like the Olympics. I’d order them in a heartbeat.

If I wanted to see the top half of the show jumping team finals tomorrow, but had a very long day at work for which waking up at 4AM would not be conducive… about how many minutes per trip should I plan on to set my alarm?

I figured that before going to bed tonight I would find a jog report to figure out how many trips there ought to be in the entire competition, then figure out how early I’d have to wake up to see the top 30 go.

Anyone see an update on the Brazilian mare who retired herself just before the finish line? I was worried about her, hopefully unnecessarily.

Any coverage of the jogs?
