Official Tokyo Olympic Eventing Thread

I came here with the same question

Eventing Nation usually does a live update as there’s no streaming coverage. Check their Twitter even if the website is down.

I said this over on the other thread too, but I can’t believe Michael Jung’s frangible penalty hasn’t been removed. The story seems to be that the jump fell several strides after Chipmunk galloped away, which would indicate that he was never in danger of falling. It hadn’t fallen for quite a few riders before him, so I think it was probably weakened and maybe Chipmunk gave it a tap, but not enough to need a save.

Sam Watson barely touched it, as well. I thought they would review all the video & the scores would be shuffled around when I woke up this morning but no.

I think it shows real class to let it stand. Instead of throwing a fit, he will accept it. It is truly too bad as he is such a worthy winner.

I suppose it “could have”, but here we are, again, in Eventing with another horse lost in competition.

Me too. I used to order the others, and watch them for casual entertainment. I’m all in favor of being able to buy something I can download, maybe, or have in a DVD or something.

The online replays are great, but not always available. And after the event sometimes hard to locate.

So sorry for your loss. :kissing_heart: BTDT.

Yes, plus the online coverage missed a lot. I’d really rather have seen more of competitors jumping rather than lots of shots of galloping. I also find it annoying how they cut back and forth between riders on course. I understand WHY they do have to do that in live coverage - but when they don’t put up a graphic as to who is currently being shown, it’s hard to follow. I think even the announcers got it mixed up and corrected themselves once. It’d be nice to see an edited version showing one rider’s complete course (of course, would need to cut out a lot of the long gallops for time) or at least, have the graphic with rider/horse name.

Having talked to someone who only say the NBC coverage on TV, I am grateful for the online though because she said it 1) started late, 2) ended early, and 3) never showed any of Boyd Martin’s ride.

Actually there will be two show–jumpings, the first super-early U.S. Time for team (3 am CT / 4 am ET), and a later one for individual. I see 49 riders completed XC, so if a few don’t go on to SJ, then maybe a little over an hour for everyone to jump?

The individual SJ should be at 6:45 am CT / 7:45 am ET, if I calculated the time difference correctly. And if I understand the schedule correctly (that’s how it shows on two sites). I don’t remember that there was such a wait before the individual medal jumping in the past, though. In Rio 2016 I thought they did the individual shortly after the team completed.

In the past, only a handful of riders jumped for the individual, less than 10. Just those that were in reach of a medal, as I remember it. So it doesn’t last long.

Each trip is usually about 90 seconds, more or less. It varies a bit at different events/courses. But 90 seconds is a good ballpark estimation.

Wondered the same, been watching the score. Is it set in stone, now? Without that 11 he is in first place and the German team is in 4th, only about 4 pts out of the medals, at this point.

Agree that all of the 11’s should have been carefully re-examined. Is there a chance that they did review them, and decided not to change any scores? Or did they just not review? I have a feeling that the German team must have asked for a second look.

Thanks for confirming that I never saw Boyd go on the NBC. I kept thinking I must have spaced it, but knew I would absolutely remember.

I watched the complete livestream yesterday and was so glad to have it. But was also glad to see some replay on the NBC today.

Glad I saw the original livestream. Of course NBC had to fit it into a time slot and sliced it down accordingly. They chopped off parts of people’s rides - that is, one horse is on camera and jumps let’s say #20, then immediately is jumping #25 (without a cut to another horse). That kind of thing.

I very much like the galloping and hope to see plenty of it on livestream. It’s the essence of eventing and says so much about how the horse is going, how the interaction is going between horse and rider. And especially how the various riders like to have their horses go. How the horse travels, what kind of balance does it maintain. Hoy’s horses are so consistently both forward and rideable. Jonelle is directing for the long spot out of stride from way back. Etc.

If you have cable, you can go to the NBC Olympics site, and watch the entire cross country replay. Just be warned that right before the big halt for the injured horse, they did show the vanning off, but I don’t know if they cut that out.

All the Chinese team are accepted at Inspection #2, underway now. EN has live tweet updates.

EN …

We’ll see some pairs who didn’t complete XC trot up, because the new format still allows them to complete showjumping for their team, as long as they didn’t have a horse fall and weren’t eliminated for a welfare issue (ie, blood.) They receive 200 penalties for non-completion.

Wait what? Is this to allow the team to complete – even though they didn’t complete?

Yoshi might be able to show jump and Japan finish as a team … ?

Also, can a team that had a rider WD or EL substitute in for that rider, for show jumping?

I think the top 25 jump for individual after team competition is done.

I also posted on the Eventing Thread in the Olympic forum ( :grimacing: dislike having two threads) and apparently there is no longer a frangible review process at the FEI level.

Thinking the jogs should be starting soon so may try to get on to the inactive Twitter account I once created to follow live tweets during a jog at Burghley. I’m hoping EN or maybe H&H will be live tweeting. That’s the big change I want to see to the coverge - I want to see the jogs!!

Yes to subbing in before show jumping. Incurs a 20 point penalty for the substitution and the 200 penalty points for the rider who was EL or RT also carry forward. A substitution has been announced for Brazil.

SWE Ludwig Svennerstal is listed as completed XC with 220. I guess that means he’s moving on to SJ after a non-completion?
