Offspring of Kennedy; FS Champion De Luxe; Popeye?

I am interested in those that have experience with offspring of any of the pony stallions named in the thread title.

As most know I am looking to breed my Wolkentanz I mare to a pony for a small horse for me.

I am really interested in Chamopin De Luxe and Kennedy and intrigued by Popeye.

There are several others that i am also interested in but they are too young to have offspring under saddle.

would love to hear any input.

tia.

Don’t know anything about Kennedy, have had absolutely horrible luck with Champion de Luxe semen, although I love him, and have had 3 absolutely outstanding foals by Popeye - one a Colt and Site Champion, the 2nd a Premium Colt and an absolutely gorgeous filly, starting under saddle this year. He crosses very, very will with WB mares for type and holds the size down. What you will get is a really good moving, gorgeous mini-WB. Since mine aren’t full grown yet, I would have to guess at final size, but I would guess at 15-16 hands depending on the size of your mare. He is large pony size, but WB build so he crosses very well, type for type. Foals are pretty, good movers, with nice dispositions.

I have a gorgeous little Popeye filly! Two yrs old in June. Lovely disposition, very nice type, rated very high at inspection. She is smart and easy to work with. On the small side, but her dam is a small pony.
Stallion agents were great to deal with and my mare took first try.

I absolutely love Popeye. I bred my pinto mare to him, and 3 years ago she had a fabulous filly. She was just champion in the green hunter under saddle division at her first show this past weekend. She is now owned by Joan Watt. There are pictures of her on my website under horses sold, and the hunters peak sporthorses website. I will be repeating that breeding this spring. I also have another Popeye foal coming anyday now. I have an Isr/old pony mare bred to him. I can’t wait for this foal. It will be a full sibling to Popstar. I believe there are photos and videos of Popstar on the Hilltop website. If not they would be on their facebook page.

are any of these guys under saddle and if so any input? videos etc? what is the body size? narrow or wider bodied? short framed or long? etc etc etc.

any and all info you can give me would be very helpful.

re: Champion DeLuxe - what issues are you having and have you heard of others having similar?

mbm - I own Popeye and we bred Popstar. She is out of the ISR mare that kealea1 now owns. The mare was by a WB stallion out of an Arabx mare but stayed 14.2. Popstar completed her Mare Performance Test last year as a 3 yo and was the highest scoring mare the Hilltop testing - 73%. She is pony and built like Popeye. She will be bred to Highlife’s Burberry this season.
Her full sister Piper is here at our farm - she is 3 now and is going into training next month. Piper is true black and much lighter build and is already about 15H. Both were premium foals.
We’ve had 2 Popeye foals out of GRP mares and they are type wise like the GRP and large ponies. One Popeye foal out of a WelshX mare and he is a medium - maybe a little more knee action than the others.

I love Champion de Luxe and tried to breed to one of our mares but the quality of the semen wasn’t great and unfortunately the shipments don’t include a semen report.
We’ve been very pleased with the foals Popeye has produced out of WB mares and plan to try him on some of our “big” girls in the future.

ise@ssl do you have a web page or can you direct me to pics/vids etc on your popeye offspring and the mares that had them? thanks!

I have a Champion de Luxe here in California. He is very typical in type and character. He was 3rd at the Bundeschampionat in 2011. He is on my website.

Champion de Luxe has produced numerous pony champions at the FEI level, bundeschampiont, stallion testing etc - search on youtube and you will find many under saddle videos. He is very prolific and consistent in his production.
Can’t speak to his frozen semen.

fwiw I should have bought Popstar. I bought my Connemara a month before going back east for WEG so never went to Hilltop as planned, I was also very hesitant to but something unstarted (she was 2 year old that year). Not sure if her video is still online anywhere, but she’s a very cool pony.

so my biggest concern is how broad the ponies are - because after a lot of thought, i don’t really want a pony - i want a small horse… like 15- 15.2 ish - not narrow, big enough to take up leg and not feel like a fence post

a lot of ponies i see are narrow… and that i dont want.

I liked Champion DeLuxe because it seems that some of his offspring are broad rather than narrow…

and i want it to move like a horse - not a pony and i want it to have more of a horse tempo…

PP - popstar looks like a nice pony

none of my ponies are narrow or feel like a fence. All feel like horses in their movement as well. Actually I haven’t tried any in Germany that were very narrow. Have ridden some that had more “pony” tempo - but those aren’t the ones I buy.

You are welcome to come see mine in person if that will help.

Yeah, he was bred in Germany. The frozen semen I had was crap. I love him, but that was a waste of money. I won’t try that again.

MBM, as I said, mine are like mini-WB’s. For further clarification, they will probably be in the 15-16 hand range and are built like WB’s, but in a smaller size. They have a deep heart girth and can take up a lot of leg. When you ask about broad, yes, compared to a Welsh Section B, but not like a draft horse. They are very well proportioned, like a WB, but in a smaller package. They move like WB’s, not ponies.

thanks Tiki for your info. i will not try Champion DeLuxe then this year! one down so many more to go!

btw Tiki - what was the main differences you saw between your Con x and your GRP x? i am not convinced yet that I shouldn’t breed to a Connemara…

what about Benno’s Dream? any input there?

No experience with the above Stallions—but I wouldn’t necessarily discount the Connemara idea either. We have bred three and have clients with Warmblood Crosses by our stallion Wildwych Eclipse.

I currently have a five year old out of an Elite Mare who is an absolute joy to own. He is not small, but not big either–15.3 HH currently. He has competed very successfully at recognized training level with scores in the high sixties–ready to go First Level (EZ). He also jumps and has successful competed at Level 2 Jumpers as well as evented at BN and most recently Novice Level (other than a rider error he has placed in the top 3 every time shown)–he will do his first Training Level Event this weekend. Its a wonderful cross.

I’ve bred over 15 GRP’s or GRP crosses and none of them have been narrow. In fact our challenge for training has been saddles and width. We’ve finally found that the Wintec AP’s are working the best for us. We can adjust the girth and the flaps are not too long on their sides.
mbm - pm me your email address and I’ll send along some photos to you.

We had 3 very nice boys by Makuba and also a nice large by Stibby Me(Sweet Rock Solid) - Scooter is his name. He’s a bay with lots of chrome and is right now in driving training (a very quick study!) and will be backed next month. Good solid build and a super temperament. Another pony we bred by Wynnebrook Starburst (Welsh B) is competing in Eventing - very athletic and a gorgeous pony.

Since you have so many preconceived ideas about ponies, especially GRP ponies, I would highly recommend that you take the time to visit some good GRP ponies or stallions in person - so you have first hand experience of what they look like and how they move.

I think you have first hand experience with Conn/Conn X - so then you can compare apples to apples and make a decision that way - vs continuing to go in circles.

Many stallion owners are happy to host potential clients at their farm to see their stallions and offspring.
