Anyone breeding, or know who is, breeding the “old style” heavier DWB horses?
I had a gelding I adored and can’t find another with the bone he had.
Or the big old moose head.
Anyone?
We have two older style Dutch mares (one o/o a high % Gelderlander dam) and a Dutch cross mare in our breeding program; however, due to market demand have been crossing them on more modern boys. I do like the old style Dutch WBs though!

Check out Lazy J Sporthorses. She has 2 Dutch mares with some Gelder blood. Had a beautiful filly out of one of her mares by Ijsselmeer Ikepono. I see the filly’s pics on Facebook, I think she’s 2 now and has a lot of substance. They did a repeat breeding and currently she has the full sibling, for sale. I am breeding KWPN Gelders horses as well as German Oldenburg. I currently have 3 Gelders mares and a weanling filly who earned very high scores at the KWPN-NA keuring and was rated the top dressage young horse at the Ontario inspection. I am expecting another Gelders foal late in May. There aren’t too many of us in North America who are maintaining the older bloodlines.
Firemist Farm in MD breeds some older style WB’s.
Have you looked at the Dutch Harness Horses? They are the “other” type of horse the KWPN registers. The Gelderlander base stock with Hackney Horse and to a smaller part Saddlebred used for outcross/improvement blood. But they tend to have a higher % Gelderlander than most Dutch Warmblood Riding type horses. Besides showing in fine harness type classes they are very popular for combined driving and many have made dressage mounts and even show jumpers.

I have some older dutch bloodlines in my mares, big solid girls, some of them have the older style heads, but as others have said, to meet current market demands I breed them to very modern style stallions. The more typey heads,and leggier long lined type is what most people want

I am ever so hopeful that the pendulum swings back this way, if only a little bit.

Got one if you like pintos! Dam is older style gelders type…this guy has big bone and feet and the “noble head”. Went against the trend that year and bred to a less “modern” stallion. It paid off…inspection scores were our best yet!

Lianca is in the Harness Horse book. Up until the mid-90s there were horses in the Harness Horse book that had no improvement blood, but were bred from the traditional fancy trotting driving lines in Holland. The last approved stallion in the Harness Horse book that was 100% Dutch was Fortissimo (although if I remeber right he was watchlisted).
Also I managed a small Ducth Harness Horse breeding program that had the mare Etinkie keur preferent prestatie who was 100% Dutch. Her full brother was a Grand Prix dressage horse in Holland in the early '90s (Atuur). LOL, DWB is the abbreviation for Danish Warmblood. If you want Dutch Warmblood, you probably need to look for KWPN horses.
But speaking of Danish horses, the Danish Oldenburg is a heavy, old style type of horse (not a Danish-bred “German Oldenburg” horse - it’s a totally different registry and type of horse). There is also the Fredericksborg horse, but they tend to be more coach style horses.

The Dutch Harness horses are lovely, but tend toward the hot side. Someone suggested an Irish Draught, and while lovely and big boned, aren’t quite what I’m looking for. That and all the ones have the conformation I have in mind are enormous.

I’ll find what I want eventually, it will probably be someone’s disapointment and exactly what I’m looking for.

I have been around quite a few of them in the combined driving world and haven’t necessarily found this to be true. Sure, some are (as are some in all breeds/lines), but most I’ve known don’t seem to be.

Mine certainly is. He’s actually DWB (Danish) x KWPN (Dutch harness), and it’s tough to tell where the hotness comes from. He’s a great GP dressage horse though, as is one of Lauren Spreiser’s horses. And he’s settled down quite a bit as he’s gone up the levels, for what it’s worth.

The KWPN continue to develop and refine the Gelderlander as a modern day horse suitable for the amateur market, the real old Dutch horses are the Groninger Paard 
We have Farrington here who is one of the few riding type KWPN stallions that when crossed with a Gelders mare can get gelders papers for the foal. I love his line. I breed for the modern type but with good bone and size. Not so much the heads you describe.

OMG…I love love love the Groninger Paard!!! I wish they weren’t so rare. Now that is my type of horse. Love the substance, bone and huge round hooves. Lovely old old type.
