Laura ended up 8th and Karl 16th.

He would have ended up with silver even if he had been clear, based on the time.

That was a great jump off.

Boy, they are really dragging the ring a lot to get ready for the awards.

Well, again the coverage on E! was supposed to be at 6 am central, and obviously started well before that. But at least Rand Moss is saying less, but more relevant items, Melanie seems to have backed off a little too.

I’m so sad for Laura, and Karl.

I love the Hermes commercials though, especially the two riders. I actually looked at their website, I can’t afford a hoof pick.

There are a lot of dropped rails.

I wonder if there was pushback about all the remarks on Laura’s age. It seemed that way from the one comment from the British guy yesterday.

She is still around! My very non horse mom is close with Carole so I giggle when my mom sends me (who hasn’t missed a minute of the livestream) updates on Laura

And this is why we practice sans irons and should be shown to all who whine

I was. I normally get up at 5 for work anyway so why not get up at 4 am since its the Olympics?

well, I slept in today, and had to wait for the replay. So I didn’t dare come here as I knew I would find out who won and I didn’t want to do that. I was wondering about Hendrik when they were talkig about his unique bridle. And I wondered if there was a screw up, if it would come off-and just then it did! When they broke to change the course, I could not fast forward thru the commercials! Then when it came back, I didn’t even see checkers go, didn’t see the course, it came back in the middle of the Dutch rider’s round. (was he Dutch?)I didn’t have a rooting interest, so I didn’t care. Congrats to them all.

Today’s course was very difficult but I think it was appropriate to determine the medals, and it resulted in three high-quality pairs jumping off for the medals. Aside from a couple of jump designs that I didn’t find completely fair since it could just come down to the horses misjudging a pattern or shape, I think the course design was excellent all week. It was tough but fair to the horses ridden by slightly less experienced riders; there were rails but the horses never looked scared or overfaced in the team event or the qualifiers.

Compared to the last Olympics where some riders had to keep pushing overfaced green horses through the course due to the lack of a drop score, I think this time the horses will be going home with confidence, even if some had more rails than they typically would.

FYI if anyone with a VPN wants replays, Canada’s CBC had great coverage. Scroll to the bottom for replays of all the equine sports:

One time I had an exit much like Henrik and broke my arm. Granted I only show at the 1.10, I now make a habit of showing my mare any tricky turns during the countdown just to make sure she knows where we are going in case I’m not quick enough to steer the Ferrari under me :joy:

So if there had only been 2 clears, would all the 4 faulters have a jump off for bronze??

I believe the announcer said only a jump-off for gold, and then time would determine placement for other medals.

I believe they only jump off for the gold medal. Ties for other than first place would be split by the time.

Maybe unless they were tied on the exact same time, which is rare, but possible.

Personally, I would have liked to see the individual qualifier track a bit tougher - 20 clears seemed like like too high a number.

Maybe its just me, but I find it less exciting that the final starts on a clean slate.

I believe they said during one of the sessions that it was basically to make the sport more appealing to the general public, since they are used to everyone starting in a final on a clean slate, not based on the qualifying round.

Like the swimmers, runners, etc., etc.

Watching the replay, very impressive riding with one stirrup from Martin Fuchs. The stirrups looked like free jumps— extremely lightweight. It was flying around every which way, no shot at getting it back while jumping around. Makes you wonder if he could have and possibly left the last jump up, had it been a heavier stirrup.
