Does anyone order their whole flaxseed in bulk online?
I found several possible online suppliers, but obviously they are closed today so I won’t be able to get info from them until Monday… but it’s storming today and I’m filling my time by researching changes to my feed program 
Can’t you get it from your feed store? in 50# bags?
Mine charges approx $20/50#, which lasts me for a long time. (BTW I feed 7 horses)
Same as Squirt. We get ours from our local feed co-op. Ground flax seed in 50lb bags.
I will ask the next time I’m there, but they tend to be pricy… I’ll shop around, as the Blue Seal dealership may be less expensive than the store I get my Purina feed at - the same brand barley at BS is $4 cheaper than the other place… (:eek:)
Didn’t know if I could get it even cheaper online… I’m feeding 20+, so bulk is the way to go :yes:
I’d think with the amount you’d pay for shipping, driving even up to a couple of hours to find some at a feed store would wind up being cheaper. Or have your local feed store order you some. And if there is a big “equestrian markup”, try a more humble place that can just order it as “seed” instead of “trendy horse food”. 
Any feed store that carries Triple Crown feed should be able to order Triple Crown whole flaxseed for you! Don’t let them sell you the ground stuff as it is not stabilized and will go bad quicker unless you can refrigerate it.
If you can’t get it at a feed store call any place that sells wild bird feed and see if they carry it or can order it for you.
I agree that if you can find it locally that is the way to go–the shipping alone would make it impractical for you to feed.

Let me start by saying that this suggestion is NOT for cost savings. But I’m going to suggest it anyway, like I do whenever flax is mentioned. I ought to be getting a sales commission!
The shipping is free, so you can take that worry and calculation out of the equation. It comes in all sizes, all the way up to a 60 kg drum (132 lbs.). Now that’s the cheapest alternative obviously and it’s $220.35 so since your eyes bugged out at 50 lbs. for $50 you may stop reading right now!
But it is ground AND stabilized, so it keeps well (the shelf-life is 6 months so that is something to keep in mind when considering the drum, but we used a drum last winter for around 20 horses and finished it in time. Wish I could have gotten it this year but it takes money to save money!) We love the results on the horses’ coats and skin with just 2 oz/day, and double that for the hard-keepers to act as a weight builder as well.
The horses love it, it is easy to serve and handle, and the customer service is phenomenal – just the type of business I am proud to support. And they have all sorts of other good products you can browse when re-ordering!
Now back to the regularly-scheduled search for CHEAPER alternatives – sorry! But we are horse-keepers on a serious budget and we won’t give up our Nutra-Flax!

Seminole distributes whole and stabilized ground flax seed from a Canadian source in 50 pound bags.
If you buy the whole seed, grind it you self or learn as I did (when I ignored Larry Mack the Seminole nutritionist) that it is like tomato seeds, anything not crushed goes straight out the other end and becomes flax plants.:lol: The stabilized ground flax will go thru a long hot summer in the south without any problems.
Or buy chia seeds. More omega 3.

DEFINITELY some seeds pass through. But most don’t. Try putting some flax seeds in water and see what happens to them. Mush. I’ve never tried it with hydrochloric acid, but I’d bet it would be even mushier.

Do you feed whole flax seed?
Thanks, JoZ for the link. It’s not so much that I have a problem spending money on supplements, it’s that I never expected whole flax to be $50 for a $50 pound bag when other COTHers can get it for less than half. I’m sure that location in the Country has something to do with it, but still!
The ground stabilized stuff I can see paying more for, as it’s had more done to it
With the free shipping, it may very well be more economical for me to get the Nutra-Flax…given it’s ground and stabilized - I’ll get more out of ground flax then whole, right?..

I used to feed whole flax because I lived in the Land of No Grass (SoCal). Still, I’d find the occasional clumps of sprouted flax in the stalls or near the barn. Most of it appeared to be from spills rather than poop.
Now that I’m in BC where there are two seasons: Rainy and Lawn-Mowing, I feed ground flax because I don’t want it sprouting in my nice native grass.

I’m in Maine too (Dresden). I buy my flax seed from RT Farms Enterprises in Winthrop. Do you know where Adams Horse Supply is? They are just down the road. I buy flax in 50 lb bags for $21.99. Actually, I just switched to the ground flax that Poulin feeds sells to them and it costs $24.99 for 50 lbs. They deliver… but maybe not up to your area. I think the minimum delivery is 800 lbs of feed. Give them a call 207-395-8118.
