Oops! Horse's tail is now BLUE. Suggestions?

Hey all,

My mare’s tail has been looking a bit yellow and I was recommended to try liquid bluing to help whiten it. Unfortunately, I was in a rush yesterday and forgot to rinse the bluing out of her tail. Today, we have a blue tail that’s not un-bluing very easily.

Any suggestions?

Rit dye remover?

Learn to really like your horse with a pretty blue tail until it comes out on its own has always been the solution I have seen people use.

LOL!
At the advice to not put horse (or other pet) in an airtight container with ammonia overnight

Agree with MyKinda: a pic would be nice to share

Well reading your title did at least get me to laugh out loud. I would love a pic also.

Dye her mane to match and tell people you meant to do that.

Have you tried vinegar? Also Head and shoulders take out color as well. Use a good conditioner.

The lady who used to do my hair always said that green colored shampoos such as Prell were good at stripping color out of hair. Or Palmolive dish soap.

I’ve used Prell after Miss Clairol turned out to be a lying wench and it did take the color out much faster. Make sure to use conditioner after.

I’m not sure that there’s much you can do but shampoo often and wait it out.

You’re not alone. A few years ago I was at an upper level Dressage show, and a beautiful gray entered the ring with a blue tail. People reacted with snickers, but mostly sympathy, knowing what an easy mistake it is to make.

I agree with @StarPattern - dye her mane and ROCK that look!

I “overprocessed” one with a purple product :ambivalence:.

The royal look took several weeks of shampooing every tIme I was at he barn, fours times a week at least. I finally just used Orvus. I tried all sorts of DIY type suggestions, it faded gradually but did fade out.

Recommend not using blueing or any of the blue or purple whiteners right before a show. Use something every couple of months to keep stains from setting in year round. Look on the bright side, at least you didn’t get the bluing on he horses skin and leave it. The hair falls out, That takes a long time to grow back and looks worse then a temporarily blue or purple tail.

Oh, working a detangler into the tail hair once a week or so sure helps to keep stains from setting in. Mane hair too if you have one that thinks a fresh pile of poop makes a great pillow.

I agree. It’s much easier to just keep up on the tail maintenance so they stains don’t ever get really bad. I own a Saddlebred so his tail actually stays up “Saddlebred style” (no tail set though), which really helps. A barrel racer friend saw what we do with tails and loved it so now she actually keeps her horses up like mine. We leave the “feathers” out (hair that covers the tail bone) and only put up the long part. That way they still have something to swish flies with. I just take it down every month or 2, wash it and put it back up. You literally never have to deal with stains. It’s awesome.

Add some green, pink and purple then call it the latest trend in horse shows: GALAXY TAIL

I know I have quickly toned down too much purple in my hair when I used a red permanent hair dye by using a Daily clarifying shampoo. I would wash it a few time in that and see if that helps tone it down. The first day or two I would wash, rinse, wash, rinse. Try to avoid the conditioner if you are going to wash it a few times in a row and don’t NEED to condition it. The conditioner will help seal the color in. It amazed me how much of the funky color the clarifying shampoo took out. The water was running a puple reddish color every time I used it. I have the Econo Suave sized bottle.

I’ll second Goop. Put it in when the tail is dry. Let it soak. Then rinse.
Then shampoo with Dawn dish soap (original formula).
Then a detangler (but not “conditioner” until you have done this a few days in row).

Or that you are trying to become the Starbuck’s Unicorn Drink mascot!

Agree with above - dye the mane to match! Hell, stick a horn on her forehead and call it a day!
