Opinions: Better quality air-cooled x-country boots: P.E. or Majyk Equipe?

Thoughts? Looking to upgrade, and DH has offered to buy these as a Birthday present

They both get good reviews, but the Majyk boots have a few negative comments related to durability - so which offer more “bang for your buck”?

ETA: my small WB mare has VERY short front cannons; most boots are a little long for her front legs - but she has good bone so needs nothing smaller than a medium. Her rear cannons are actually a little wide for the standard medium - so how do these boots tend to fit?

TIA!

H & H has a fairly recent review of XC boots. Their top choice was the Veredus E-Vento XC.

They rated Majyk at the bottom and P.E as next to the Veredus.

I’ve never used the ME boots, but I have the PE hind XC boots. My horse’s legs always stay cool in them and I have no issues with them spinning or slipping. They are kind of long. He’s a 16.2hh OTTB, and I think he’s in size large and they’re almost too big for him.

They’ve been really durable and still look nice despite years of use.

However.

My horse absolutely hates them for no obvious reason (nothing pinches, rubs, etc.) He just gets wound up beyond belief as soon as they’re on. He’s much happier in cheap Woof boots.

Quality wise, PE are great boots. If my horse wasn’t so fussy I would still be using them.

I bought the magyk equipe Xc boots after really loving their open fronts and I’m just meh on them. Legs stay cool and they don’t rub my horse but they are a major pain to clean and fit can be a little wonky. They are very adjustable, which would be nice if you needed to use in multiple horses but I feel I always have to tweak them a bit to get the hinds on decently well.

I have had both and currently use the ME boots. I think they both kept the legs cool, I personally like the ME’s better. the PE ones never fit my horse all that well, even though by their chart they should have fit. Every time we went through the water the hind boots would slip and then she would spend the rest of the schooling kicking out. I haven’t had an issue with slipping with the ME’s at all. I think they are pretty durable…I have one pair for schooling and one pair for showing (I’m so high maintenance) and use the schooling ones frequently. Use for XC schoolings, sometimes flat rides when the footing is sloppy and out on the trail and they still look great.

I have a horse that rubs really easily. I use the PE ones for him. He didn’t rub from them. I looked at the ME but I am pretty sure that the way the binding is would rub him. Woof boots are fine on him but he does sweat under those. He doesn’t sweat under the PE.
I only had the hind PE slide once and that was because we crawled over a house and he really drug his hind legs over the jump. But they did their job and protected his him. With how hard we drug over the jump I would say anything would have slid in that situation.

Thanks to everyone for the input! It would seem that most of you are leaning slightly in the direction of the PEs.

@skipollo - would you say the PEs are on the long side? This is a definite consideration for my mare’s front legs; her cannons are Connemara pony length.

@Dr. Doolittle I will try to remember to measure mine tonight. I have the mediums for both front and hind. My horse that primarily used them is an Arab cross that is only 15.2 H because he has really high withers. His butt is more like 15H. He is pretty short legged.
I have used the mediums on my OTTB. He is 16.1H and fine boned. I wouldn’t mind the medium a touch longer on him for his hinds. I do think the large would be too large both around and length.

Thanks! Do they have a measurement chart? (Off to check)

Ms mare is 15.2 (refined head and neck) but has warmblood “bone” - usually mediums fit her in front but can be a little long. Mediums in WOOF boots or the Professional’s Choice Ventech:

are actually TIGHT on her rear legs - which have longer cannons - but I think the large would be too large? and may slip. It would depend on the individual characteristics of the boot brand, methinks.

I throw mine in the washing machine. Super easy and they come out sparkling!

Yes they’re def. long. If I had to buy them again I’d probably go one size down.

Thank you for the tip!! I’ve tried soaking and scrubbing and they always look dingy even after plenty of elbow grease.

If you have white ones like I do, I always spray with shout first, scrub a little to loosen the worst of the dirt, and then throw in the wash with detergent and oxyclean. They’ve done really well that way!

Hmm, I’m wondering about the return policy on these brands.

I had a short cannon problem with my horse and the ME in size small are just short enough for her. I’d be happier if they were maybe 1/4" shorter, but it seems to work for her as is. For reference, she wears a medium in Woof all purpose boots, so the ME small is not particularly small, and my horse doesn’t have skinny legs.

You can buy the ME from Riding Warehouse. It doesn’t look like they sell PE. If they don’t fit there is free return. Or from SmartPak but with their latest reported issues I would be a bit more hesitant than in the past.

I did not make it to the barn last night to measure the boots. I have a lesson tonight so just need to remember to measure them when I am there.
My OTTB is pretty fine boned and the mediums barely fit him. I would think they may be too tight for a bigger boned horse.

Good to know, thanks!!

I have PE and the hinds are LONG. The chunky monkey is 16.2 ish and beefy although not long legged, and the large were much too tall. The mediums are not quite wide enough but doable and a better length. He goes in larges up front. I have had them for years and they have held up well.

Love the PEs too. Had mine for 5 years and they are still like new. Was going to switch to ME but I saw a lot of people with them where they were falling apart, fading and the Velcro coming off. For a newer boot that concerned me. They aren’t cheap and should last.

My “everyday” black ME’s are 2.5 years old and still ticking. I use them 5-6 days a week. My white show boots are coming up on 2 years old and still look almost new.
