So this is standard, at least on the east coast for a lot of braiders. The profit margins are slim when you factor in travel, housing, food, supplies etc. This is mostly disclosed upfront in communication with the trainer or whoever is scheduling the braiding. If a braider is doing 10 horses for a barn a night, they may not accept other clients (and people are always searching for braiders). If 2 horses are leave in and the braider did NOT know this, the loss may not be able to be made up. I do not begrudge the fee (I don’t leave in braids) when it is disclosed. I also do not have a problem with people calling out those who do not pay their bills. If the leave in fee was the disupute, at minimal pay for the service you received. “I” would not blast someone in this situation, as it appears the client did not know of the fee.
If you read KS’s posts on Facebook, this person/client did pay the cost of the service. KS refused the payment because it did not include her leave in fee.
So it is not a case of the person not being willing to pay for the service.
As an owner, I would not want my horse’s sleep interrupted every danged night at a show to be re-braided. Put the braids in one time and leave them. If they need to be fixed, I will either do it myself or if needed, call the braider back - or find another one.
The post I orignally say the person owed the full amount, not the leave in. Again, I would not blast someone over $50. And the leave in fee can be standard. Addressing Down Yonder’s comment, “call the braider back”, yeah that is why there is a leave in fee. Braiders who don’t have you on the schedule may not be at your beck and call, especially if they filled your slot. To assume they can run back is I don’t care what people do one way or another to their horses as far as braiding. It just seems sometimes people tend to jump on and make issues depending on the identity of the perceived offender.
Seems to me that it ought to be pretty simple to sign up for braiding for one session without the assumption that it would be every night during the show.
If braiders are booked full with repeat clients, then one night clients would be lower priority, perhaps handed off to a less experienced braider.
I would also expect the “one off” clients to be lower priority if Weedwhacker rubs braids out and needs them fixed.

Although I think the gazillion tiny braids look nice, I do miss the days when pretty much anyone with a bit of practice could do a respectable job with fewer braids.
It just adds to the ever growing list of things one needs to pay for over and above the actual class entries and stabling fees.
Yes, and that was clarified in the comments by more than one person. The full amount was owed because KS refused the payment the owner made of just the braiding fee, no leave in fee.
It reads that the owner did not know anything about the leave in fee and was paying what they were told it cost for the braid job for the day they asked for the braid job. KS refused payment saying the owner then owed the leave in fee.
Like I said above… If you (general) want to charge whatever you want to charge for this service, however you want to charge it. But you (that same general) need to make sure the clients know that before you provide the service.
If you (again, same general) say it will cost $90 for a braid job, then it should cost $90 for a braid job. If you are going to charge extra to not get the next days braid job (for whatever reason, the person is not showing, or they are leaving braids in) then you need to be upfront and tell them that ahead of time.
This is not that complicated and I am not sure why someone who claims they are almost a lawyer does not have this information front and center for anyone who they are braiding for, before they braid for them.
This is how it was always done when I was using a braider.
You signed up for the braid jobs you needed and that was that.
And the client’s trainer did post as well to say that they were definitely not informed of the leave-in fee ahead of time. The barn was from Canada, and therefore it’s not clear how they would have already known about the leave-in fee without being told, even if it might now be a common occurrence at some east-coast shows, as some have stated.
Structure your business however you want, just communicate it to your clients before the work is done.
On a side note, perhaps we introduce her to that dude from Making Pegasus? They could create a “masterpiece” horse. The possibilities would be endless!
Btw I have had a lawyer on the job as needed over the past couple of years sorting out my mother’s estate. Not even a high end white shirt big shoes lawyer just a nice woman who can help with probate etc.
Wouldn’t it be nice if she only charged like a braider! Wouldn’t it be nice if she only charged $150 an hour!
I’m sure if I required her to fly across the country for the weekend I would be paying all the expenses too.
However I have no reason to disbelieve anyone who says “I’m making more in (insert quirky side hustle/ MLM etc.) than I would ever make as a doctor/ lawyer/ other top paying professional career.” I have no doubt this is entirely true for them.

Why don’t braiders just have a rate sheet. You can post it on FB and print out for shows. Something like:
Friday, Saturday, Sunday (braiding all 3 nights) $300
Individual nights $150
That way there is no “leave in fee” and customers can see that there is a discount if you get the horse braided all 3 nights. Sounds logical to me (who likes to know upfront what I will have to pay for a service.)

I do. Everyone is well aware of my prices as was this trainer who was referred by another trainer. It was not even my client. She called last minute before Kentucky and I sent her two other braiders numbers as I could not accommodate her. She fired both and one had an issue getting paid by her. Then take 2 she messages day before for a show in VA and yet again I make calls and find her a braider there last minute. I was being nice to the trainer only because a long time client of mine referred her to me. No worries no longer. My prices are well known. No one has issues. But I’m tired of people playing victim. I don’t care that you’re from Canada and haven’t paid it before. I contacted their Canadian braider who said she just Upcharges her tails on leave in days to make up for leave in fee. Trainer is none the wiser. I prefer to be upfront with my fees. Prices are the prices and you can choose to use the services or not. If you choose to use them then you pay. Especially when you’re not my client and I’ve never touched your horse with my team and have only gone out of my way to help you find a last minute braider.
Side note my flip flops are under Armour. In case anyone was eyeing them. They are super comfortable.
