Opinions on DHH crosses for jumping?

I’m a little afraid to ask this question, since I feel like the odds are at least 50/50 that I would be better off remaining blissfully ignorant.

But what does it mean to “bag” a horse in this context?

A local rescue near me has this fun DHH gelding for adoption. Sure looks like a blast to ride and can probably do a bit of everything.

Lol, I was just coming here to suggest this horse! He does look pretty fun.

Tie a plastic grocery bag to a stick. Wave it so it makes a noise and is visible.

LOL I do some braiding on the side, typically for dressage, and I think I need to make a flyer now that says Braider at Law.

I was expecting something much worse, honestly.

I loved when Shatner still drove. Always nice seeing him.

Is he still doing reining horses? I think I saw a video of him from a year or so ago.

That’s all it is. A noisemaker that’s a little scary and has some movement associated with it that jives up the horse.

He still drives. Just saw him on the green shavings this year.

Yep, it’s just hazing the horse with a plastic bag tied to the end of a whip. In and of itself, nothing wrong with it at all. Except that the entire point is to encourage exactly the opposite behavior from how I want my ranch horses to behave under pretty much all circumstances. :grimacing: It’s really hard to untrain the “snort and blow” response.

I have a horse for sale and I can tell what discipline the buyer is looking for based on their response to my “this horse does not have a lot of snort and blow.”

People here who haven’t ventured out of their world might be horrified, but it’s a normal part of some people’s lives.

At the Arabian show in Scottsdale Arizona, there is even a “designated bagger” an actual show official to “jazz up” the halter horses just before they enter the ring….I shit you not !!

Also use, a milk jug with rocks in it, baby powder (usually though that’s to get the ears) you want them up up up and after they understand what you want, typically they just have to see it. So that’s why that horse did the big jump, he couldn’t see him with the blinkers on and then he saw him and he’s supposed to react, so he did. I get this is all quite odd if you don’t live it, but seriously go to a SB show and watch in the warm up, or the victor pass. I mean they’re usually getting them up with the bag or shakers as they come in the chute, they come into the ring full bore, and that’s when you catch the judge’s eye. Also when the judge gets to see who your trainer is…

ETA: I haven’t been in this scene since the early 00’s so there may have been rule changes that makes some of this illegal now.

I remember when fire extinguishers and fire crackers were legal to jazz them up just before entering the ring !!

me too! I was the one running the fire extinguisher, not dexterous enough to trust me with firecrackers!

Also your 5 year old is stunning, if he gets his daddy’s canter/jump you should have a lovely hunter there!

A few years ago I trailered over to a local farm to use the indoor ring and get a video of a sales horse. The barn owner brought in one of her saddlebreds with her young son on board and proceeded to shoot a BB gun into the rafters to school the horse. :open_mouth:

I didn’t get the video I wanted for my green hunter prospect that day.
