Opinions on DHH crosses for jumping?

Yes, I agree. This is to really “show off” so the horse is getting bagged a little (or anticipating being bagged). I think absent that extra stimulation the horse would be much quieter. I have seen the horses at Devon being bug eyed in the ring and then be much calmer in schooling. They’re intentionally jazzing that horse up in the video.

For a similar comparison, my yearling showed hunter breeding all year where he was expressly taught NOT to run people over or act like a fool while being stood up and jogged. Then he did the YHS series (a qualifier and a final) where they crack whips at them and get them running. And he did. He did some IMPRESSIVE airs. And then 2 weeks later was back to jogging politely in hand for HB. They know the difference and they react to the stimulus around them. If you bag horses who are trained to respond, they will get a little wild (that’s part of the goal). Doesn’t mean those horses are always acting wild.

I do hunters so I am not looking for that wide eyed response but that’s what they want for other disciplines. It’s, to some extent, trained behavior.

This one reminds me of my late Aristos B gelding (also Dutch) so much it kind of hurts :frowning:

I’m with ya there. There’s reasons I have QHs, even if the Hunter types are still a bit too much for the average all around amateur these days. They still have most or all of their screws securely installed.

If you watch the videos of this guy and this horse, the horse is also like this at home. And in the stall. And unloading from a trailer.

It’s got a screw loose and probably shouldn’t have balls.

A Tuigpaard gelding we bought at an Amish auction. He made an excellent field hunter

That’s ridiculous.

None of these horses appear to be as unstable as “Hubert”. Horses can be lovely in all the ways, and still have a garbage temperament.

I guess I’m just not a fan. Saddleseat riding, and driving a somewhat sane flashy animal sounds like a blast. A horse who tries to launch themselves into space over a bag they’ve seen a million times (and not just once, but multiple launches in a row) is not a horse I care to be around.

I was trying to find a good video, and came across more asshole animals, one a stallion at a retirement ceremony nearly ripping the arms off the individuals at his head as he was being unhitched in the ring for the ceremony.

Noooo thank you!

How is that ridiculous? Striking at a handler is a breeding trait we want? Launching around in harness?

Isn’t temperament part of breeding criteria?

I beg your pardon?

I was complimenting the chestnut horse by Popeye K in your video.

I don’t know how that is related to a baggie.

If you look at videos of this stud when he was in the Netherlands prior to being imported, he was perfectly safe and very nice. IMO much nicer than in this video.

The guy in the video is an idiot and doesn’t have a clue what he is doing. He buys flashy horses to make money on social media and not a clue about much else.

I guess between that and finding another big name stallion video where that horse also looks… unpleasant… I’m just not a fan.

Different strokes for different folks. I’ll tell you one thing for sure - none of the DHH I explored appear to have a penchant for jumping. Ha.

Replied to wrong person was trying to reply to person who said Hubert had screw loose and should be gelded

That’s amateur hour compared to the horse class where most, if not all are off the track Standardbreds. Oh yes, that’s a bike, not a cart at most shows.

Well, he doesn’t seem like a very nice animal to be around. And if that’s his MO, yeah he should be gelded no matter how pretty he is.

he is not overly unmannered…gelding him would be a shame

Case in point: My little Arabian mare is a very, very good girl. Buuuut…she has been bagged in the past. Today my trainer wanted to work her on the cutting “flag”, which is basically a plastic bag on a pulley that zips across the arena to simulate cutting a calf. Her little eyes just about bugged out of her head, and the dragon snorts could be heard a mile away, I’m sure. She did eventually settle and figure out that this bag was very different than the ones she’d seen before, but I was VERY glad the trainer was riding today and not me!

I have a road pony, retired now. He carries my kids under saddle safe and sound but tell him to “ get up there” or growl at him and he’s warp speed. He’s extremely safe but will turn it on in the show ring. I love a hackney brain and all the craziness that goes with it.

Standardbred roadsters are some of the safest horses ever, they just happen to have a couple gears. They have seen everything at the track.

While personally not for me since I’m just a little person, I’ve seen this guy going around some events in the last and he’s pretty cool. And successful!
