Opinions on DHH crosses for jumping?

I must admit I got a little distracted by the assorted headwear on display in that video. Including the backwards baseball cap on the guy driving the horse.

The horse looked like he was actually trying to do an imitation of a Lipizzan towards the end there, which I have to think is probably not really desirable for a driving horse.

We have been to three Amish DHH and DHH cross horses, two in Cloverdale, Indiana and one in Ashland Ohio. and have purchased three. The auctions are a hoot !!! The one in Asland included what they call a โ€œstompโ€, stallions parading up and down a street at the fairgrounds with hundreds of people lining each side. The auctioneer was really entertaining with such lines as, โ€œEzra has to sell this horse because with this horse at home all his wife wants to do is go driving all day longโ€
โ€œ Iโ€™ve gotta warn ya before you bid on this horse. You know we arenโ€™t supposed to be prideful but if you own this one itโ€™s surely gonna test you.โ€
โ€œYou single men better start bidding on this one becuse if you own him you wonโ€™t be single very long.โ€
Itโ€™s been my experience at these auctions with the safety of families at stake with them being driven on public roads , the sellers are scrupulously honest about their horses

My wifeโ€ฆ.she does all of our competition riding with the exception of we had Sarah Mechlin Duhon show our Hanoverian Stallion in Hunter classes for the 2022 season

Ha, this is the same stallion that I said was whacka-doo and lots of people said it was normal behavior for a horse of that type.

That behavior in harness, is that normal too?

SCREW THAT. I can think of about a hundred more dumb ways to die that are more fun than trying to wrangle a horse with a screw loose, who is allowed to breed because heโ€™s โ€œfancyโ€.

I see there is a ground handler with a bag on a stick to fluff the horse up, and the horse spooks after he passes that handler on the diagonal.

Completely normal for an auction. Perhaps boarding on a bit boring  I only see one person w a plastic bag and nobody throwing powder in the air.

Here is another one of ours. A five yr old gelding out of our Tuigpaard mare by Popeye K schooling this week. he is waaaay behind in his schooling for his age as Iโ€™ve been buried in horses, thirteen now down from sixteen, and was late getting him started. He will make his debut in Baby Greens in April or May. Got his first good clean flying changes just this morning

Ugone is lovely. She certainly moves like the harness horse that she is, but also jumps with zeal.
Thereโ€™s such a huge difference between your breeding program and Shearerโ€™s. The fact that your mare is well conformed and not ewe necked is the start.

Do some people find that type of behavior fun? Iโ€™m being serious. Mind you, I like a hot and sensitive horse, but thatโ€™s not normal hot, itโ€™s screw-loose.

Very cute, and his canter does remind me of his dad!

Also, welcome to the BB.

You should venture outside of your discipline more.

May I present to you a roadster to cart class.

I just meant that the horse spooked at the handler or the handlerโ€™s body language was a tad too โ€œexcitingโ€ which is why the horse spooked. It wasnโ€™t out of thin air

Here is a better excellent example of a well accredited DHH stallion that has had a huge impact on the breed.
Hubert is a very cool horse, but his owner could have his own COTH topic 10000 posts long about all the questionable things he does. :scream:

Right. Completely normal kind of thing to see at an auction. They really like to get them worked up.

No itโ€™s not. it was a minor jump away from a baggie being waved at him

Heโ€™s lovely

Good luck with him. Even if heโ€™s a little behind for his age, he looks like a healthy and relaxed boy who was started well and will be a real pleasure to ride. Thatโ€™s great.

Wow. Thatโ€™s great video to see as a contrast. He has more push from behind, and his back doesnโ€™t look tight to me. I could conceivably see how he might cross well with riding type mares.

I do like seeing them all in harness

I think that sometimes horses can look dangerously hot (especially to those unfamiliar with the breed or discipline or whatever) but really arenโ€™t. No clue about this particular one, but the people in the video donโ€™t really appear to be concerned and while heโ€™s bouncy toward the end, heโ€™s never really out of control.

I watched a demo of Friesians in carts, pairs and four in hand. Riding patterns in an arena at an equine trade show. Good harness horses IRL are absolutely amazing and you can see why having a fancy team was a huge thing in the 19th century.
