Opinions on Ruffle Shirts and Pre-Tied Stock ties

Since there have been some threads on show outfits lately, AND Dressage Extensions new catalog came to my house yesterday I have been pondering getting one of those cute ruffle short-sleeve show shirts like this

http://shop.gooderider.com/p/noble-show-shirt-1?referring_products=%7C0dfa0c0f7e57e76e2e6c693ec5249a6c

I HATE stock ties, I’m too busy/nervous on a show day to fuss with arranging some piece of white fabric that I will inevitably get dirty either by my own hands, or the dreaded neck-sweat ring. I have one pre-tied stock tie that I use, but washing it is a pain and frankly it is pretty ugly.

Any recommendations of a good pre-tied tie? OR does anyone use the ruffle shirt for showing? Since I have to catalog order it returns are a pain so I would love to hear some advice before shelling out the $$$.

I love the Dameron stocks.

I also love the shirts for other people… I feel like they add too much bulk in unflattering places for me!

I’m curious what others say as well! I’m obsessed with those shirts, and have wanted to dress up my show wardrobe a bit! However, no one in my area has worn one so I don’t know how they look in person!

I think they are lovely shirts; I don’t particularly love stock ties either but mainly because they contribute feeling too hot in the summer. This shirt looks like it might feel a bit cooler. The only thing I was wondering about was when jackets are waived, we’re not supposed to wear a stock tie - so you’d have to change your shirt. . .

I think those shirts are nice. I hate stock ties and have pretied ones I just put on and pin in the back when I need to.

I’ve been using this one under my shad for a few years now and I just love it: http://www.dressageextensions.com/silver-thread-tux-stock-tie/p/59948/?eid=WGSH00&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cse&utm_campaign=Feed&feedonomics_pid=005994831150559948&feedonomics_channel=Google&feedonomics_mid=153&gclid=CMHWv-_hxcsCFYMlgQodcd8B1Q

I have every intention of getting a shirt like that before this show season. I also hate stock ties. I hate anything tight around my neck, and stock ties have always been an issue for me.

I’m hoping the buttons aren’t too tough to do - I would love the option to button it up after I warm up.

My issue with stock ties is that i’m not a 6ft model with a long, slender swan neck, so a stock tie makes it appear I have zero neck, which I feel makes me look ‘stocky’.

I’ve been wearing these shirts that have a very simple stock tie that lies flat on the neck. It just snaps on right before I get on, then I unsnap and wear the shirt like a regular polo when I get off. I think it is more flattering that having a lot of bunchy fabric on my neck.

I do like this shirt… the ruffles are UNDER the neck. Not sure I could pull it off in the dressage ring though. What say COTH??

I would not be upset at all if stock ties go the way of top hats and we can just wear snap collar shirts like the h/j crowd.

I have this shirt and love it - super cute and flattering! However, the ruffled collar doesn’t match well with every coat. And because of its height, you can’t really wear another stock tie over it.

So here’s my question - the rules say tie, chocker or stock tie. I actually asked two judges and a TD this question at a show last year because I was trying to figure out if those ruffled shirts were actually legal. No one had a clear answer.

DR120 Dress

  1. The dress code for all Dressage tests and classes through Fourth Level (see .5 below) is a short riding
coat of conservative color, with tie, choker or stock tie, white or light-colored breeches or jodhpurs,
boots or jodhpur boots, and protective headgear as defined in DR120.5 and in compliance with GR801.

We can just wear snap collars according to the latest rule book

My problem is that while I am actually only a size 8, I apparently have a bigger neck circumference than others, and it’s hard to find a snap collar or ruffly one that actually does up without throttling me. I haven’t tried that Goode Rider one yet, but it is on my radar…

A lot of the snap collar shirts I have tried have these incredibly fiddly little plastic press studs that I can’t get done up easily in my bedroom, let alone at a show.

I did order the Harrys Horse Rosa shirt from the Connectedrider.com website the other day, which claims to have a lycra piece in the neck, and has solid looking snaps that should be easy to do up so we’ll see how that goes…

(And you can just undo the top button on the ruffled collar shirts when jackets are waived, seen that done a lot here.)

You are quoting an old rulebook Current rulebook says:

DR120 Dress

  1. The dress code for all Dressage tests and classes through Fourth Level (see .5 below) is a short riding coat of conservative
color, with tie, choker, stock tie or integrated stand-up collar, white or light-colored breeches or jodhpurs,
boots or jodhpur boots, and protective headgear as defined in DR120.6 and in compliance with GR801

Is the snap collar the same thing as the “integrated standup collar”? I don’t know this term “snap collar” or what that is or looks like.

I googled and this came up, they call it snap style

http://rhcequestrian.com/dressage-wrap-collar-show-shirt-coolmax

Yes, that’s the sort of thing they mean. One needs to be a little careful one doesn’t end up looking like a vicar…

Would you still have to wear a stock tie if you wore a snap collar H/J type shirt?

No, because it’s an “integrated stand-up collar.”

I don’t find that appealing at all.:lol:

I always wonder why more women don’t just go with pretty versions of traditional mens ties. Too reminiscent of the Annie Hall era? Just not the fashion? From my perspective it would just be so much easier than fussing with the layers and the flounces and folds of the stock ties.

With the new integrated stand up collar rule, well not so new just people didn’t test it right away we have sold a number of these:

http://www.theconnectedrider.com/riding-apparel/womens-riding-apparel/sport-shirts/horze-andrea-ladies-sleeveless-riding-shirt/

As a jacket covers the blue, this little shirt seems quite popular.

These seem to be a dressage rider favorite though:

I personally have the BVertigo Lorraine and ride in it, I love it.

If you go the stock tie route know there are stock ties that go on like a regular choke collar with the “pin” already integrated so they are a really fast on and off, like this one:

http://www.theconnectedrider.com/riding-apparel/clothing-accessories/harrys-horse-stock-tie/

We had some of the crunch style that are so popular but we are waiting on a restock of those (they have little crystals on them so they sold fast, lol!)

Let me know if you have any other questions as I would be happy to help.

Thanks for clearing up the rule! I googled and grabbed it from the USDF brochure, not the rulebook.

Feel like I’m going to need to read the whole thing all over again with all these new rules!

You don’t need to change shirts if jackets are waived. Lots of people wear them alone. I however don’t like the look of the shirt unbuttoned. So, while I have one I’ve not wanted another.
