Orphan Res Foals

I’m going to love Jake till the day he dies! My hope is dressage but I’ve been toying with the idea of hunter jumper :grimacing: it’s been about 13 years since I’ve jumped :joy: but he would make a stunning hunter! Just gotta shake out my bad knee and pull out the KT tape.

I’ve just been doing a racehorse detox for this year. He officially doesn’t bite :raised_hands:t4:, hugs are now asked for instead of nipping when I tried to hug, stands at the mounting block like a champ, understands whoa actually means whoa (wipes sweat off of forehead :joy:), walks like a good boy on lead instead of a superstar race horse, he lets me brush him with happy ears, he lets me hose him without prancing. So really this year is just bringing him back to earth haha and he is just sweeter and sweeter every single day. I’ll be happy if he just is a relaxed trail horse who loves life. I’ve been doing a lot of rescue/rehabs and that’s been pulling me from working on my own riding projects! I’ll get there :joy::grimacing:

@Paint_Party it’s so easy to get a good shot with happy horses! I need to start deleting hoards of photos :joy:

My girls would get on our track restarts bareback with a sidepull and just relax stretch walk and circle and bend.

Let the horse feel the rider’s body mechanics first. The use of the seat and leg.

I’d say as you point out - it takes a year to turn them around and the second year to make them. Good on you.

He’s not my first OTTB but he is my first direct off the track. I’ve had OTTB with issues but I’m trying to go slow to avoid being the one creating problems :joy: that being said, I am OPEN TO ALL TIPS and advice!

I’m glad to hear that it takes a year to turn them around and a year to make them because there’s such differing opinions! I start to doubt whether I am cutting him short but building a bond has been so much cooler than just doing the work. All kinds of kinds I guess :joy: I’m the let’s be friends kind.

I’ll have to look into a side pull, I’ve been strictly using a buck brannaman rope halter until he learns to work off of a feel. Lots and lots of purposeful serpentines. Started with walk halt transitions and then working into each gate slowly. Like most he is sticky on one side but really responds to verbal cues and quiet hands…lesson for me, quiet hands :joy: he wants you to be quiet and present but not too present to where you are now “loud”. I think the biggest struggle at the moment is finding the right saddle! My CWD was a no go :sob: such a beautiful saddle.

@MNick, I have a couple of biothane horse-sized sidepulls I’m no longer using, if you’d like to have one to try out. Not sure how big a head your guy has, but PM me if you’d like to try it out.

Every day we are getting a little closer. Kinda Kookys boy has really brought a sense of ease to their world. They are so curious why he’s ok with us. In the video is Elsa, she will be a forever fixture around here since my best friend decided to keep her!

We officially have homes for everyone :raised_hands:t4: the next five months will continue to be focused on socialization for all of them, laying down the law, in a loving way :joy:, in hopes to create well mannered horses! We will be swapping Jake out for K.K’s boy once he leaves. Currently Jake is living with a red headed mare that I don’t care to introduce our wholesome boy to :joy:

Ignore all of the scratches on my hand…six orphan kittens who are now in play mode 24/7. Boots does not approve

One of the gals that helped orchestrate the foal rescue, put together a Res horse challenge that will follow Navajo horses. She’s also the gal that organized to have John Dutton “assasinated” :joy: turns out not all actors are like their characters hah

Yanno… there is SO much judgment (especially on social media) about THIS way is better, THAT is the way it should be done, MY way is the best way, anyone who does it another way is doing it wrong. Part of that is sensationalism for clicks, but some people really do think they know everything.

In all the horses and all the years, I have learned that there is no one way of doing anything and it’s better if you just listen to the horse. You won’t regret filling all those educational gaps before riding! Heck, I’ve had Peach (the OTTB) for over a year now and I haven’t even put a saddle on him yet because his feet were trash.

SQUEEEE babies. I can’t wait to see what colors they officially turn out to be!

A little late night cuteness

Kinda Kookys boy is a god send! He has stepped in 100% as a guiding force and has been so gentle and has taught them quite a bit. She is so fantastic and offered to let him stay a bit longer to help bring these babies into a better head space and I could not refuse the offer. So grateful for Kinda Kooky! It’s been so sweet to see his demeanor change in a short 24hours with them. His confidence is building and he seems truly at peace. As Kinda Kookys said “he knows he’s needed” I think that’s a little grounding material for his next haul to his final destination.

@Heinz_57 you are so right! I mean not social media right :joy: that would be wrong! This forum has been so awesome and I’m so excited to have my “virtual horse friends” to bounce off of! Also… the coloring has me baffled on Elsa the little possibly grey, possibly lord knows what haha

@Paint_Party everyone is staying here till December. The two that are the smallest have an amazing home to go to together. I’m sure I’ll be posting about crying my eyes out in December :joy: I may or may not be keeping the one who “chose” me. How could I not, right? So his home that was found is me :joy: as if I don’t have a yearling in the pasture as I type haha

Uncle needs a name!!! We are having Nancy ask if he has one he likes next week.

Otherwise, would love some suggestions, nothing I throw at the pictures seems to stick.

I have a Beetlejuice and a Pony Dreadful, this horse is too sweet for my naming practices. :joy:

Last night I was almost in tears (I swear I’m not a crier haha!) it was like watching broken hearts patch each other up! My Bowie filly will ONLY participate if there’s food and then she wants it all :joy: there is not one mare on this property that has a heart for these foals. Just Jake and who we call “new guy” :joy:

@Kinda_Kooky Ambrose and Lazlo are cute! I can’t wait to hear about your session with Nancy. I so badly want to know just how deep his connection was with Theo! @luvmyhackney it doesn’t sound like my theory of them being raised by a sweet little Amish girl and being sold by the cold hearted father was their reality :joy: shucks!

He has a naturally sweet demeanor but the shift in him was night and day. I’m waiting for kinda kooky to send me back to the remaining foals to pick one out for her… kinda seems he needs one! We should just gift it to her husband so he doesn’t feel left out!

You can name him Uncle Mo.

There was a famous TB sire named that.

Uncle Buck? (Fester, Jed, Ben (from Spider Man, not the rice, haha.)

I wish you were correct. Humans just suck sometimes.

Every baby needs a good uncle to look out for them!

I think I would name him Aslan, after the lion from the Chronicles of Narnia. He seems to be looking after them the way a good protector should.
