OTTB Pedigree COTH Compilation (TB bloodline list)

APRIL 2015: CHANGED THE TITLE TO BETTER HELP PEOPLE WHO ARE SEARCHING

can we get some sort of massive compilation (aka the good the bad and the ugly) of anecdotes of TB pedigrees? IE, can we compile a massive list of stallions/broodmares? i feel like with COTH’s extensive experience and brilliance, surely this would come in hand for people?

maybe something along the lines of a GIANT list like:

Ali Oop (al hattab x courtly dee) - tend to throw compact and big boned horses good for sport.

AP Indy (seattle slew x weekend surprise): throws sound horses with good bone, great jump prospects, “ammie friendly”, seems to be a more successful sporthorse sire than sire Seattle Slew. Tends to throw swayback as age accrues.

Artax (marquetry x raging apalachee) - Tended to throw a lot of blingy, amateur friendly but athletic babies who have a “bigger” look to them. warmblood type.

Bernardini - strong presence, tends to throw very correct and good jumpers/brains for sport.

Bertrando (skywalker x gentle hands, by buffalo lark)- easygoing temperaments and a great jump.

Clever Trick (icecapade x kankakee miss) - not the best for sport horses, sometimes unsound and non-ammy friendly. (see also, Phone Trick)

Conquistador Cielo (mr prospector x k d princess): athleticism, good movers

Cozzene (caro x ride the trails): nice action and temperament. Good jump.

Dance With Ravens (ap indy x dance smartly): ap indy son, great mind and sporthorse sire.

Dixieland Band (northern dancer x mississippi mud): good sport-horse sire, ‘grandsire’ sire with chasers and turf racers on the ground, excellent jumping athleticism (see Delta Judge) and good movers with aptitude for eventing. some have good brains, some do not.

Fappiano (mr prospector x killaloe) Good brain and jump. Tend to have slightly camped out hindquarters but doesn’t impact movement or scope. Reputed “hot” rides. Aptitude for eventers/jumpers.

Ituango (Acatenango x Iringa) - Seems to have strong sire line, Acatenango has several chasers overseas.

Include (broad bush x illeria): “old school” bloodlines, tall & uphill with flowy strides.

Langfuhr (danzig x sweet briar too): hunter types, flashy with good minds.

Pleasant Colony (his majesty x sun colony): tend to be long-legged, uphill, big gallopers and above-average movers. athletic event prospects.

Pulpit (ap indy x preach): typically stamped with nice front ends, nice necks & shoulders. athletic, though sometimes “chunky-qh” in build.

Private Account (damascus x numbered account): excellent sporthorse sire

Reviewer (bold ruler x broadway): considered “brittle sire”, unsoundness issues in offspring.

Roberto (hail to reason x bramalea): well established sporthorse/jumper sire, see Dynaformer, good chase horses but not always the best movers.

Say Florida Sandy (personal flag x lolli lucka lollo): very correct stallion, reportedly throws born-broke & sound sport-types. quiet good brains but sensitive and require tactful rides.

Sky Mesa (pulpit x caress): good mind, pretty, all around types that are ammy friendly.

Spectacular Bid (bold bidder x spectacular): lots of jump, soundness and durability in offspring. Proven source of sport horse talent. Sharp gangly ale hind end, with jumpers bump is typical. Event prospects.

Stormcat (storm bird x terlingua): “difficult” type personality, but excellent sport horse prospects

Tiznow (cee’s tizzy x cee’s song, by Seattle song)- tall, dark and handsome, intelligent and sensible, good jumpers. May need time to grow into themselves.

Two Punch (mr prospector x heavenly cause): tend to have great bone, very athletic types with three quality gaits. Most have seemed to really enjoy xc/hunting.

Unbridled’s Song - several precocious get, good line but watch pairing.

Waquoit (relaunch x grey parlo) - well known jump sire, produce height and soundness.

Yarrow Brae (deputy minister x bally five): absolute solid chase pedigree - athletic and easygoing jumpers - “allergic to timber”.

Yes It’s True (is it true x clever monique): nice quiet types with good canters. ammy friendly.

those are just examples off the top of my head, can other people contribute? maybe in the future such a thread would be of great benefit to people who are looking for certain sport prospects (IE delineator, lyphard, john speaks, etc).

to everyone replying with their thoughts/opinion - could you post it in a manner like above, keeping it concise (including sire/dam if possible) so that i can easily just copy and paste into the list? a really important thing to address would be things like “throws soundness”, ‘notably brittle offspring’, please indicate if a contender for soundness or not.

I will try to COPY/PASTE everyone’s insights into the OP if they are structured in a format similar to above - but this is not an exhaustive list!

My favorite go to when I can find it is…Private Account x Conquiestador Cielo Sire/Dam or Dam/Sire…also Domestic Dispute Sired with a Conquiestaor Cielo mare…time n time again they have proven to produce tonight athletic good moving horses.’

ohhh! good call! i love private account as well. anyone else?! there has to be someone out there who knows more than i do!

I like the El Prado bloodlines and have really liked the Senor Swinger horses that have had in terms of being good brave jumpers and ammy friendly.

  • Yes It’s True- really nice quiet types with good canters also ammy friendly.

  • Langfuhr- man these are some of my favorites. They tend to be hunter types but really flashy with good minds.

Two Punch- they tend to have great bone and are very athletic types with three quality gaits. Most have seemed to really enjoy xc/hunting.

Sky Mesa- I have two in my barn that I just love. Soft in the bridle, pretty, all around types that are ammy friendly.

So far all that I can think of right now.

Artax - Tended to throw a lot of blingy, amateur friendly but athletic babies who have a “bigger” look to them. Not bulky, but all of them I’ve seen could easily pass for warmbloods (once grown up, not while scraggly track babies), including my own mare.

If you had the time for it, the thing to do would be to stalk all of viney’s posts about bloodlines that she’s posted on hundreds of TB threads.

will do! do people want me to edit my OP with each addition or just make it a big post? i have tomorrow off, maybe i will spend it creeping on viney’s posts!

Fantastic idea, I love having them all listed in the OP. This thread might help you with research.

Spectacular Bid, lots of jump, soundness and durability in offspring. Proven source of sport horse talent. Sharp angular hind end, with jumpers bump is typical.

Cozzene, nice action and temperament. Good jump.

Fappiano. Good brain and jump. Tend to have slightly camped out hindquarters but doesn’t impact movement or scope.

thank you all who have contributed! keep them coming, i will keep adding them into the OP!!

BUT while I have had a ton of nice horses there are crosses or lines I don’t like…Personally I have had 1…one Two Punch I like…i have a gorgeous Artax horse But he looks easy and is the hardest horse to ride. Includes no way, Clever Tricks i love maybe because he and Dixieland Band I knew personally.
Halo’s won’t touch unless exceptional. While I have had huge success selling Dance With Ravens have turned down as many as I have bought. Minehsafts awesome to date. Have a Stormy Atlantic who is impressing me so far.
Medaglio 'D Oro just Wow and I loved my RockHard Ten and his pedigree and conformation made you drool but he was not light on his feet and landed like a box of rocks over a jump. Sometimes its more the combination of sire and Dam/sire not just the Sire. There are certain nicks that are very consisant and others where a sire is so strong he overrules the mare.

Can I request comments on Danzig, Aly Wow, Charismatic or Nasty Affair? Century City?

I’ll 2nd you on the Dixieland Band & Clever trick…though a bit down the pedigree line. I’ve owned a Dixie Brass gelding and one out of a Phone Trick mare and they were both great horses. The Dixie Brass horse was quirky, but super athletic. The Phone Trick one is the funniest horse I’ve ever known, huge personality, a sense of humor and very sociable. Before he broke, he was quite athletic.

just want to bump this… i will have some time on sunday to work on this and would love several more people’s inputs on stallions/mares to add!

From word of mouth, a couple from the Relaunch line:

Bertrando (skywalker x gentle hands, by buffalo lark)- easygoing temperaments and a great jump.

Tiznow (cee’s tizzy x cee’s song, by Seattle song)- tall, dark and handsome, intelligent and sensible, good jumpers. May need time to grow into themselves.

A shameless bump. I think this thread is a great idea. Too bad it can’t be a sticky somewhere.

You mean like the RRTP Bloodline Brag, LOL? Fun to read y’all’s comments though. My sample size is severely limited, but I do a LOT of reading and watching other horses. I agree with the OP’s AP Indy assessment and I’ve also seen more than a couple AP Indy/Slew line crosses that resemble my boy in a lot of (good) ways.

I know Slew can be unpopular with some, but from what I have observed, it depends on who he comes through (that didn’t come out quite right, LOL, but you know what i mean!). For example, mine has Slew on both sides, once through AP Indy and on his dam’s side, through a grand-dam crossed with an Allen’s Prospect (Mr. P) mare.

Of course, my horse is perfect. Ok, he could have a better trot, but… Hee.

I’ve also not seen a horse who has Danzig or Roberto fairly close who does not have a nice trot and a pretty “look.”

For those of you interested in the Bloodline Brag, here is the link: http://www.retiredracehorsetraining.org/index.php?option=com_sobipro&sid=63&Itemid=356

It is searchable by sire and damsire and even by discipline. I’d LOVE LOVE LOVE it to get bigger with more horses.

I think that any thread like this that does not mention Birdsall’s jumping sire lines is going to be deficient. I know we can list current stallions but it is important to include historical sires and sire lines, because that is where the athletic ability comes from.

Horses like *Turn-To and Mahmoud; Secretariat, and other influences in the stayer lines like Double Jay; the incredibly prepotent jumping lines of the Babamist, My Babu, Mystic familes; and more. Classic lines provide us with the athleticism we are seeking. The apple does not roll far from the tree.

Buckpasser - great jumpers, excellent brains

Danzig - very ammy friendly, excellent jumpers, opinionated. Also, I have known many, and all started racing at 3 - not 2 (where Danzig was grandsire on sire’s side).

Sharkey - Tall, smart, quiet, fantastic jumpers. Harder to find but worth looking for.
