Our Boy at the OBS 2 year old in training sale

Can’t say I have high hopes because I don’t know what to hope for from the market these days. But this is the first sales horse that I have bred and raised in a while that should bring more than “fair” money. Might even “ring the bell”. There was a time not too long ago I could pretty much know exactly what a horse will bring. These days it’s anyone’s guess.

Worked really well, 10 flat for the work, galloped out hand timed in 33-4 and 48 all on his own. A little be of knee action but that’s being really picky. But so are the people that give top dollar.

According to the people that do “stride analyses” he’s in the top 5% out of over 1200. He’s no “egg beater”

The mare has been great to us. Just missing being a really good producer. Sold a “Derby Horse” out of her for little money during the depression years. Broke his maiden at Gulfstream in his second start in Jan of his 3 year old year. Got a 104 Beyer, 3 1/2 rag number!. “Throttling down” as the announcer said about a pole before the wire. Got tons of “Derby horse” press then got hurt getting loose in the barn area and ran into a dumpster.

Every foal but one has been a winner in Allowance races. The mare gets beautiful foals with great minds. Can breed a donkey to her and get a great looking TB.

This is his pedigree, nice but nothing real special.

Vid of him being “inspected” by someone. He’s always been cool, calm and and easy horse to work with.

He’s been vetted twice already buy the “right people”

Clean vet other than a very minor comment.

We’ve done all we can do the rest is up to the lord and hopefully the interest of several different people with a lot of money to spend.

“Baby is desperate for a new pair of expensive shoes!” And a new truck. Well, not new but much newer than what I have. Which the motor just blew.

Hope I’m not jinxing myself by posting this.

Best wishes for a great sale. Those sales would make me a nervous wreck. Seems like the only real winners are the auction house and the agent most times.

Good luck!

Best of luck to you

Just curious - why OBS and not FS Midlantic?

Hope you get what you want - looks like a nice colt.

Hope all goes well, gumtree!

That is a nice moving colt! Best of luck with him, gumtree. I hope you ring the bell!

Best of luck!

OBS has a MUCH broader, deeper buyer base. This colts pedigree and quality deserves/needs a wider buyer base. OBS has a very good track to train on and breeze and the facility is much nicer and makes the whole experience for both buyers and sellers more enjoyable.

Timonium and I grew up in the area, worked as a groom there, family raced there, is much more utilitarian. Buyers and sellers just want to work the sale quickly and go home. Shallow buyer base for upper level horses.

But one of mine and many other’s favorite restaurant, Michael’s is across the street. One of the BEST places to get Crab Cakes, and that’s saying a lot. It is Maryland and we invented crab cakes.

Sadly given my family’s and myself association with the “old” Fasig-Tipton I don’t much like doing business with them anymore. Many others have said the same. Boyd Browning is a, well, …

Thanks for all the positive vibes!

I figured I’d post the details for people who are not familiar with the process.

So far as of yesterday we have over 100 inspections. Which is not surprising considering what he showed on the track. Much more encouraging, scary is the fact he has been vetted AND scoped by 7 different people. All the “right” names.

So I think it is safe to say there will be more then just one person bidding against the reserve. I hope. Kind of sucks that he is second in the ring tomorrow. People can be a little slow getting of their hands early. Better to be a later selling horse when the “mood” of the sale is made.

But much better be second in the ring on day 2 then day one. And much better to be second in the ring than last 9-10 hours later. Or god forbid the last of over 1200 horses days later.

Nice, very attractive colt, no wonder he’s spiking interest. Imagine they’ve liked him enough so far they should show up tomorrow morning. I’d be bragging a little on that one too, tempt the gods of fickle buyers or not.

Fingers and toes crossed he don’t step on a safety pin or trip over a wheelbarrow in the next 22 hours or so.

Gumtree, how exciting for you and must have a feeling of pride in a homebred getting this amount of attention!

Keep us posted. Do you have a link to his catalog page???

Got my fingers crossed for you!!

Good luck!! I’ll be very interested to hear how it goes and who buys him.

I saw Mizzen Mast when I visited Juddmonte a few years ago. He was lovely and he seemed to have a nice disposition.

7 vettings and scopings!!! I would be thrilled. What is the median at this sale and what have the Mizzen Mast 2 year old sold for in past years?

I don’t know what you are hoping for but I would think that $75,000 is in the bag, and $100,000 is a good possibilty if the sale warrants it. All you need are 2 people and with all those scopes, it sounds like you may have more. Never having been to that sale I have no idea what the average and median are, but 10 flat sure would impress me. Was he the fastest of the breezes?

Are you putting a reserve on him? We ALWAYS did, just to get the bidding started. Do you have a friend who will keep the bidding going to a price you would not sell for less than (bad grammar). Or you could do a ‘live money’ reserve to make sure that no one steals him for $30k.

“One of the BEST places to get Crap Cakes” Post 9 -
(Typo, which is a rare GT occurrence, or on purpose, I wonder?)

Best wishes on the sale of your beautiful colt!

We have been first in the ring and we’ve been among the last five of the day several times and I will take being early over late any day. Technically, you’re already “mid-sale” and buyers will show up for something they really want. Plus, a couple of extra bidders will probably show up hoping to get an “early deal.” They can be your underbidders.

Good luck! I hope he does wonderfully well for you.

Good luck! Some people in one of my partnerships have one in, 1017. She doesn’t go until Friday. Lonnnng wait.

My mistake, didn’t catch the catalog link was in the OP.

Love his walk. I have no idea what makes a good walk for a racing prospect, but liked it just the same and he seems to have a very kind personality.

LOL, yup 7, now 8 vet is our all time high for a sales horse. $75-$100 is what we have him pegged at also. Couple of very minor vet issues, dents. So it is really difficult to peg him. Could bring twice that.

The consignor is an old buddy of mine that I worked (we were the guys on the end of the shank) the 2 year old sales with in the early 80s. Nick is from England and came over here with a backpack, literally. No “connections or family” in the business. Built a heck of an operation when he settled in Ocala years ago. He told me this is his last year and is turning the business over to his son and daughter in-law.

Yes we are setting a conservative reserve but well above $30 no stealing from me. Too many have out of this mare due to lack of cash flow. Sold a Broken Vow out of when he was staring out for nothing, 5 months later he brought $125 as a 2 year old. Sold the Stormy Atlantic for $15 when he was just getting traction, 6 months later he brought $180, Sold a very nice Jump Start filly for $40,000 fair money for a Jump Start (I paid $5 for the stud fee) filly was on the small side of things, 6 months later she made $160,000. At $30 I will would find the money to race him. Don’t tell my wife. This is the best horse out of the mare.

That’s the way it goes when one doesn’t have good cash flow. We got whacked by the financial melt down.

I am very familiar with the auction process. Grew up in it. My father was a “principle” with Fasig Tipton for over 30 years.

The top works were 9 & 4/5

Star Guitar was a running machine in La. Good breeding program also. The horse had a very good work on the time sheet.
