Our Boy at the OBS 2 year old in training sale
LOL, yup 7, now 8 vet is our all time high for a sales horse. $75-$100 is what we have him pegged at also. Couple of very minor vet issues, dents. So it is really difficult to peg him. Could bring twice that.

The consignor is an old buddy of mine that I worked (we were the guys on the end of the shank) the 2 year old sales with in the early 80s. Nick is from England and came over here with a backpack, literally. No “connections or family” in the business. Built a heck of an operation when he settled in Ocala years ago. He told me this is his last year and is turning the business over to his son and daughter in-law.

Yes we are setting a conservative reserve but well above $30 no stealing from me. Too many have out of this mare due to lack of cash flow. Sold a Broken Vow out of when he was staring out for nothing, 5 months later he brought $125 as a 2 year old. Sold the Stormy Atlantic for $15 when he was just getting traction, 6 months later he brought $180, Sold a very nice Jump Start filly for $40,000 fair money for a Jump Start (I paid $5 for the stud fee) filly was on the small side of things, 6 months later she made $160,000. At $30 I will would find the money to race him. Don’t tell my wife. This is the best horse out of the mare.

That’s the way it goes when one doesn’t have good cash flow. We got whacked by the financial melt down.

I am very familiar with the auction process. Grew up in it. My father was a “principle” with Fasig Tipton for over 30 years.

The top works were 9 & 4/5
I sure hope you get every $$$ and then some! We’ve got a gorgeous Van Nistelrooy stallion at our farm that is owned by a friend. Unfortunately, he too got caught up in the financial meltdown and was never able to send this colt to the track to see if he could do anything.

At 17+ hh, he’s probably worth more as a dressage prospect than he is as an unproven TB stallion.

Good luck! Fingers crossed for you!

I loved Mizzen Mast when he was racing, by the way.

He looks lovely and sounds like he’s caught quite a few eyes. Hope he sells well to a great racing home!!

Expecting an update in the near future…

Live broadcast kept buffering on me. Was up to 80,000 when it cut out. :frowning:

Congratulations on a wonderful sale, gumtree! And he went to great connections too. That’s a lot to look forward to.

Very nice… looks like the hammer fell at $120k!

Where’s the happy dance

Congrats!!

Congrats on the big sale! I love a mizzen mast. He looks like a cool dude.

I left out a “dent” he has on the vet report on purpose. He has a Calcinosis circumscripta, look that up. I had to. It’s in his gaskin. If I had included this and the picture I am sure everyone would have thought I was screwed.

When we were taking sales x-rays for the Keeneland September sale late last summer it popped up the computer screen when taking pics of his right stifle area. I freaked!!! WTF is that!!!. Looks like the creature from the Alien movie before it popped out the the “host”.

Kiss of death for a yearling sale. But generally doesn’t bother them. But you don’t know until the horse is put into training. It’s kind of rare and few people have experience with it. In 30 years of looking at sales x-rays my first time!

Other than that his vet report was perfect/clean, A++ scope

Once in training if it is going to be a problem the “area” will get sore and they may be a bit lame at times. This will happen within 30-60 days. If not no worries. That’s what several vets I consulted with told me.

To say the least I was really worried when he went into training. Fortunately it never bothered him. But it is a “dent”, an ugly one at that. For this sale he had very small P-1 flake, vet said it should never bother him.

So given the fact he is a very nice horse and showed his stuff on the track, huge stride analyses we got very fair money. $120,000. With no “dents” he would have easily have brought twice that. We figured/hoped he’d bring $125-150.

He was brought by Dr. David Lampert of Genetic Edge who specializes in genetic evaluations, stride analyses and cardio evaluation, heart size, etc. Very well respected in the industry. I am sure he knew the “dent” was of no worry and would give a big discount on purchase price. He got a very nice horse for very fair money.

My only regret was not being able to keep him and race.

Picture of him at the training farm from a couple of weeks ago. Not the most flattering of his head.

Thanks for everyone’s interest and encouragement!

lol, I do the “Walter Brennen jig/dance” that he did in the Treasure of he Sierra Madre when they found gold.

It sounds like a lot of money but in the grand scheme of TB breeding and selling we got fair money. Not enough to bring out the “Walter Brennen” in me.

I bought the mare in carrying her second foal with a really nice Swan colt at side in June of that year for $45,000. Sold the Swan weanling for $240,000 I believe 5 months later in the Keeneland breeding stock sale. Did the “jig” that night and bought drinks for all of my “friends” in the old Dudley’s bar.

He’s a very good stallion. Just misses being a top one. Great value at $10,000. Same sire line as Uncle Mo.

Congrats on a big day!

When I looked at that picture - yikes. When I clicked at the arrow on the right side to see what the next picture, your manure pile captioned “after” came up. That wasn’t intentional was it?

Congratulations! Yeah, that x-ray is bizarre. I wish I hadn’t looked at it while eating lunch lol!

Congratulations Gumtree! That is one gorgeous youngster you’ve raised and very impressive movement. He is definitely one I will be following, and I’m guessing I will be in good company.

I can where that x-ray would have been a ‘yikes’ when first seen.

Glad you got what you thought was a fair price.

That last photo you provided, he looks like he’d make a nice warmblood

Already nicely filled out. Will he be raced do you know?

I do not envy those of you in the TB (or any, for that matter) breeding business. Tough business with no guarantees other than it is tough with many highs and lows…

Let us know when he gets a name - I would love to follow him!

Congrats gumtree! I’m glad he did well for you. Please keep us updated with his name and race results.

Don’t fret about letting the prior year foals go for less than what they seemed worth. You got them sold, you got cash, you lived to fight another day. Sometimes that is better than trying to hold out for “the most” money. Plus, doesn’t it always seem that when you turn down good money for a horse, it gets hurt the next day, or something else goes wrong???

Well, after you deduct what it cost you to raise him, pay expenses and commissions, I hope that you still get your new truck, and baby’s new shoes!!

Who did you breed the mare to for this year?

Did you have that thing removed? Nice price. I hope he has good luck throughout his training and racing career.
