Owners who change horses names.....

I am so upset!!! I sold the full brother of Bliss MF to a trainer in FL with the, sadly only verbal, agreement that he would not change his name, Backstage MF. He just entered him in the YHS and I saw that he changed his name to Enzo’s Odyssey. First of all, YUCK! Second of all it is so important for breeders to get SOME recognition that initials at the end of a name become so important.

What do all of you think I should do?

Maggie

I sold one of mine with OHS attached for Oak Hollow Stable. New owner changed the name. I think I can get her to add OHS before she starts showing him.

Ask the new owner of that horse to add MF.

there is nothing you can do

we are at their mercy

unless of course you are “special” ;>

Tamara

Wow, I hope they had a reason for renaming him that!

Other than they liked it?

This is a beef between breeders and new owners. And as a breeder I’m partial to the names I give my babies, but get that new owners feel justified in changing names. Of course over here it cost money because you can’t just give a horse a new ID.

But oh my, Maggie. That horse had a beautiful name! I can understand changing something like Mac’s Girl From Venus, but not Backstage MF. Personally I won’t change a name no matter how bad. First off, I subscribe to the bad juju theory on that and secondly because I’m a breeder myself.

I agree with above poster. Ask them to add your prefix thing. I know it’s not called a prefix because it’s at the end but I can’t think of the proper name.

Terri

Prefixes are at the front, suffix is at the end.

Oh Maggie, how infuriating. I feel for you.

Has anyone ever tried putting the NO Name Change clause in a sale contract? Curious.

the only thing you can do is rally for the USEF to not allow name changing once a horse has shown and only allow a name change before showing with a high fee for it to be done

think of all the good that would happen if people could not hide records and ages if they couldn’t change names, come on join the dark side of breed show style…

I know it will never happen but just think…

I have asked him to change the name back and/or at least keep the MF. His response was that I had no right to send him a “threatening” text. There was absolutely nothing threatening about the text. Then I left him a message on his phone. I admit I was crying when I left the message because Backstage MF (Oscar was his barn name because he was born during the Oscar’s) is a really special horse and still a stallion. I am very proud of him and would really like to be known as the breeder. He refuses to respond to my texts or phone messages.

I have to admit I am just devastated.:cry::cry:

Maggie

you can always acknowldge on your site that he is now being shown under X name, that way when people search they find your site and can know that you were his breeder

yes it is very sad…I have had it done to me…let’s see…6 times now? maybe

there is a GREAT grey small who (now)has a name from CW Anderson’s book and has the fact that he descends as a cross from the oldest two Welsh A (mountain pony) lines in America are lost…the beauty, the talent, the ability the history…all lost and now he’s for lease as he is “sadly outgrown”

and no one will ever know a thing about him

Tamara

Well changing a name is one thing but given his breeding shouldn’t you be known as the breeder in documents. Sounds like you may just have to let this be no matter how painful. He is rightful owner and can do what he likes. I wouldn’t like it either but if someone sent me a text saying change the name back, I’d probably ignore too.

But agree with needing a better system in which names just can’t be changed willy nilly. And at least prefixes and suffixes should be minimal requirements.

Terri

You can be known as the breeder. Just put the horse on your “Sold” page under his new name too, so when people google him your farm comes up as his breeder.

If I were the purchaser I would be very peeved you posted my name on a BB. I would take that down if I were you.

If I got a crying message over something as relatively trivial as a name change, I’d add you to the list of horse crazies that I’ve met in my life, and not return your call. Come to think of it, if the message was about darn near anything and was full of histrionics, you’d go on my do not call list.

Nothing wrong with either name. I kind of like Enzo’s Odessey, it’s a bit unique.

I am a firm believer in standing behind what you do and say. Michael promised me he would not change the name and then did out of the blue. So no, not taking his name down.

I also don’t like all the hiding behind anonymous names and not posting peoples names on the BB’s. If you can’t stand up for something you write or say then don’t say anything at all.

Regardless I am posting this because this is one of the things that has to change. When a horse is born it should be given a name and number that is his or hers for life. That is also the number the horse shows under for every show. That is the way it is done in Europe I believe. That way there can be no deception. If you don’t have the papers and number for the horse, no showing. Same for the horses brought in from Europe. The number system should be reciprocal with Europe. Then people can’t bring in GP jumpers and put them in low divisions.

I am just so tired of all the dishonesty in the horse world!!! It makes me wonder why I am still breeding sometimes. Sorry, having a really sad, bummer of a day.:frowning:

Maggie

Sorry Red Mares, but a name change is NOT trivial to a breeder. It is often the only recognition a breeder gets and it also affects rankings on USEF etc. When a name is changed, the new owner RARELY lists the breeder’s name on the USEF forms. I have bred many ponies that are showing all over the country whose names have been changed. Pretty much the only one anyone knows about is the one that just had her photo in the Chronicle for finishing 2nd at PF - and that is because her name was not changed. And she is likely the only one i get credit for breeding. It is also impossible to know the new names sometimes, so you cant even get the breeding info added to the records on USEF. It is very disheartening to breeders. While it is a new owner’s right to change a name, I think they should give a thought and care to the breeder who took the time, money and effort to breed that nice, new horse or pony for them, and probably didnt make a dime in the process, but rather did it out of the love of the breed or sport. Thank you so much for your lovely response. What an empathetic person you must be. Wow. I especially like the way you completely missed the point and only focused on my pain. Thank you.

One reason there is little to no value in reducing the price to a “show home.”

WOW, you realize that you are posting on the SPORTHORSE BREEDING FORUM don’t you?
