I’ll never forget some advice that I think McLain Ward wrote in a COTH column some years ago about how it’s so important to have “amnesia” when on course, i.e. to not let the fence you just rode affect the fences you’re going to ride. The ability to take that and apply it to whole rounds or days of competition sounds beyond difficult. Major kudos to Karl for staying in the present and making it work.

But it has a lot of interesting information about McLain’s operation behind the scenes. His right hand man has been working with him for 35 years, since McLain was just a kid. 35 years! In the horse business, that’s like 300 years. Lol.

McLain is amazing in that it’s clear he’s able to do just that. As you said, it’s hard to imagine coming back and putting in a round like Karl’s with America’s Olympic qualification in the balance and after the start he had. So impressive

Not sure if he still is but last I heard Mark Laskin left Canada & was hired in Mexico.
But that was a couple years ago.
