Surprisingly easy to miss a flag. It can be hard to judge where a horse has jumped when the flag falls e.g. a horse jumping a big corner. In effect, the rules say only the hind legs can be outside the vertical plane of the fence. It is always best to judge a fence where flags might be a problem head on. The GJ frequently remove penalties given by FJ for flags because it can be very ambiguous and the GJ are watching livestream so can re-run the incident multiple times. Nothing to do with Ollie Townsend, more a difficult rule to apply.
Agreed. He actually looked to be floppy for several jumps prior to the fall. I wondered if he was struggling physically.
He was absolutely already unconscious (or close to it) before he came off.
Went back and watched this one again. Purely one person’s unprofessional conjecture, but agree that the rider looked like he was struggling for a while before he actually came off. Looked like maybe he was struggling to breathe in some of the closer shots on the video and possibly trying to protect something in his midsection that was paining him.
That’s what happens when some folks bring 5* horses to a 3*.
Since Canada and Brazil are fighting for an Olympic qualification (I am assuming US will finish in the top two), I am not surprised they brought some 5* horses.
What I am surprised by is Colleen’s time penalties. Mike, as first team rider, may have been told to be a bit careful to ensure a round with no jumping penalties, justifying his 7 time penalties, but Colleen’s 13 time penalties is a lot for a very experienced horse and rider on a 3* course.
We (Canada) have to outjump Brazil today to secure the Olympic qualification.
I thought there was two Olympic qualifiers up for grabs? The US already has theirs…
Oh … that is great.
I did not realize it was the top two placings not including any country that had already qualified.
Then perhaps the 5* horses were not necessary as we “only” have to place ahead of the less experienced nations, the best of whom (ARG) is a distant 4th, by 90 penalty points.
Eventing Nation also had a good interview with Colleen where she found Goldie a bit behind the leg at the first combos, and while she was upset with the time penalties, it still got her home clear in jumping efforts.
I was happy when we got through the inspection, now we basically just need three horses to finish stadium and we have a qualification
show jumping already off to a grim start with clearly gassed riders knocking down far too many rails
I wonder if many of these early horse / rider combinations have any 4* experience. It is only XC that is 3* right?
yep only XC was 3*
I did not realize Chile was such a mountainous country. I really like it when the camera pans out and shows the countryside.
Woo hoo! Canada has qualified for Paris!
yikes the US is really biffing this, wonder if there’s some nerves having been the leaders all weekend
I think I just heard the commentator say Canada could take the team medal!
just goes to show how wildly unpredictable eventing is, wow
That really took a turn for the US!
OMG. I cannot believe it. Way to go Canada
i never would have guessed there would be this much of a shakeup coming out of yesterday, good on canada for having some amazing rounds, it really paid off!
