Is George Lindemann Jr still out there still training too?
That’s how Barney Ward stayed in the game all these years. They just tell everyone that someone else is running the business. Seems to work well for a lot of others in the H/J world such as Jon Soresi who dropped his business and went to work under someone else’s roof.
No. I don’t think that’s the situation at all. I doubt he is trying to say someone is running his business. Why would he?
Barney can run the business, buy and sell, train, whatever he wants to do. He just can’t do it on the show grounds. All the showing horses either belong to his son or clients (USEF recording).

PV’s problem is different. His reputation as a trainer was mainly through equitation riders, not as much buying or selling. He needs to be at the show ring or have someone else handle the client at the ring.

I don’t want to cause trouble, but before anyone does anything rash with regards to Jonathan Soresi (reports him etc. as discussed in posts subsequent to the above), some fact checking is in order.

 1. He is, in fact, registered in Florida and the photograph that accompanies his listing is dated 2/11/2010. So he has updated his registration.

 2. He does live in New Jersey for part of the year where he trains under his own name (although I do not think he owns the barn his stable is located at). The address listed on his registry simply states the name of the town he is in. He was also at a different stable in the same town—perhaps this is where your confusion comes in (“They still have him listed as a NJ resident at one of the old facilities he rented despite the fact he hasn’t been there for a very long time”), as while he is still in the same town, he is at a different facility but the generic address (town name only) still applies.

Just a little more information.
Well, here’s a little more information. Under FL law, and under federal law also, he is required to check out of NJ prior to leaving the state and check in in any state that he may do more than drive or travel through at the address at which he is staying and check out when he leaves. For instance, if he travels to a horse show, whether in state or out, he has to update his address while doing so by checking out from his residence and checking in at the local authorities where the horse show is.
He also is required to check in/register at the address at which he is residing and any other addresses in FL that he stays more than 3 days out of the month. So although his photo may be up to date (that gets updated with a driver’s license change) he is not updating his addresses and so forth.

a link to the FDLE page that the public can access:

http://offender.fdle.state.fl.us/offender/flyer.do?personId=59653

he has no FL address listed

I have access to the database that contains this info and I just checked it. So if he is in FL he needs to get his info updated to reflect his residence, whether temporary or permanent, in FL.
So if his behind is in FL, he has some business he needs to take care of. that’s the point of the system,to know where these guys are and track them in case something happens.
Again, if anyone knows where he is, simply report it to the local authorities and he will be picked up.

That’s what I figured and that’s what looks sketchy because that info was in the other databases which he is no longer a part of, which may actually be because he’s been reclassified as a low-risk offender, but that can easily be confirmed by calling the appropriate authorities as they don’t put the basic information for low-risk offenders in the NJ/NY database anymore according to the latest rules I just dug up but they will furnish it upon request unless they have a reason not to. It used to be they had everyone up there but I guess with the number of serious sex offenders being so high in NY and NJ, they decided to scale back and focus resources on the repeat and serious offenders.

He still needs to check out of where he’s leaving and in where he’s going, under the Federal Laws.
What happens is the jurisdiction he’s leaving notifies the one where he is going, and they send someone to verify the address and that he is there. And the same thing happens when he checks back out and in to go home.

Sorry I am new to this and got all sidetracked with what I thought the rules meant regarding riding for a suspended person’s benefit, now I am reading about this Soresi guy. Is there a list of banned USEF people that a parent can access?

Here it is. It doesn’t tell why a person is suspended. You have to dig up the actual summaries or call the USEF to get that information. They have write-ups of the recent suspensions from the last few years available on the website if you dig through it.

So I guess people are mixed in with people who forgot to pay a fee at some show like the magazine we get.

Read the “suspended” list and then trot over to Google for more info. If the banning involves any criminal behavior you should find it via any search engine.
Obviously “googling” everyone on there would be a problem but if your trainer or someone recommended to you is on there, check them out.

Most of the iindividuals on the suspended list at any one time are on there for bad checks. You can usually pick them out of the list because the suspension is open ended.

If there is a start and end date then it’s a suspension for a rules violation of some sort. Recent violations are online on USEF’s website but you need to know what month the hearing results were published to find the details.

Keep in mind that being suspended by USEF does not imply criminal activity.

Also, the suspended list is just who is suspended at the present time. A trainer could have been caught for drugs multiple times and no longer be on the list. So you can not assume that not being on the list means the trainer has a ‘clean’ record. There is no historical list of past suspensions but it would be a nice thing to have.

If I were planning on sending my child off to shows with a trainer, I’d google him/her up and down first. Obviously any one can have problems with returned checks or disputes with shows etc, but serious ethical issues would wave a big red flag.

You’d think that most people would do that.

However, I’ve seen first hand parents who ship off their little darlings on multiple day trips with trainers who have serious drug or alcohol problems, including people who have had to get their working students to drive because they have had their licenses suspended .

Yeah, I liked some of those trainers, too. Some of them were good trainers. But I would not send my child off with them unsupervised.

There are too many GREAT trainers out there that have lived their lives and spent their careers being respectful of humans, animals, and themselves. Why mess with someone that has not? It is not like they are so great, no one else can teach you those things.

Maybe we should start an Angie’s List type thing for the Equestrian World. and INCLUDE suspensions on a monthly basis and if feasible figure out a way to show one list with MULTIPLE suspensions of the same people (maybe even the KNOWN have LIFETIME beside their names)… I would think you could copy and paste the lists from USEF and save them each month before the new list is added. Then do a search of a LONG list for the same names… Could also be a great way to find farriers, Vets, good and bad haulers, maybe even show grounds rec’s good and bad…

I’m not sure what the rules on this would be with having a database since the information is copyright protected by USEF. I really like the idea though…

from COTH article
http://www.chronofhorse.com/article/show-jumping-horseman-year-mclain-ward

“I can’t influence peoples’ opinions,” McLain added. “They’re going to say what they say. If they have dislike for me or my father or how we do things, I’m very sorry about that, but I can’t control that. I do my job very well, and I think we run our business well, and our horses are treated as well as they can be.”
Wasn’t it last year when a jumper shipped from the west coast headed for the Madden’s went to their barn, and it was replaced with a lesser horse that went on to show in Florida…before being discovered as an imposter by the horse’s
previous trainer ?

Honestly if I have the wrong people, please correct me.

Yes I believe you are correct. There was a huge thread about it here and also a print article in COTH

…and parents who come to a show, looking for their child, and inquire
in the horse show office as to their child’s whereabouts. When asked by
show secretaries who the child’s trainer is, the parent says they don’t know, aren’t sure, or only know the trainer by their first name.

scary stuff

My parents shipped me off alone with my trainer for weeks on end during the summer. Luckily, my trainer is a wonderful person who’s become more of a friend to me in adulthood. It could have been worse, and was for a lot of the girls around me training with an individual in our area.

Parents get just as “wooed” by their kids trainers that they often don’t do the necessary background checks before shipping Susie off with Trainer X. I see it every day, and am thankful that none of the kids I know are in a bad situation at this point.

Kids raised around the horse shows are often incredibly impressionable, and pretty vulnerable. Something about sheltered personal lives, and whatnot.

An equine better business list would be great. Especially for the really bad people who prey on the “new to horses” people.
