Pegasus World Cup 2020

Going med free for 2020.

”The 2020 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) and Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes (G1T) will be run free of race-day medication…”
They are also waiving the entry fees & giving 2% of all purse winnings back to TB after care.

This will be interesting.

Aside from the medication thing I think it proved that the huge buy in plan was an epic fail.

Whenever I see someone talking about how great they are for donating a large sum of money–in this case the winners’ money because it’s deducted from the purses–to that nebulous place called “Thoroughbred aftercare” I cringe and wonder where the money will actually end up.

I wish the winners could pick the charities they want to contribute to–rather than having to let Belinda Stronach do it for them.

Was it ever really an “invitational”? Seemed like you got an invitation if you could get ahold of a racing-sound horse and were willing to cough up the seven figure entry fees.

Maximum Security’s connections don’t like the idea… https://www.paulickreport.com/news/thoroughbred-racing/absolute-game-changer-maximum-security-could-target-saudi-cup-after-pegasus-purse-reduction/

Maximum Security’s connections don’t seem to like any ideas that don’t originate with them.

3 million is not enough!

I wish that horse was owned by someone else. Anyone else. The Wests’ little games get tiresome…

$3 million and $1 million races are still nothing to sneeze at. But, I feel badly for the connections that have been pointing horses to this day specifically only to have the purses reduced so drastically, and so close to the event itself. I feel like they could have made this decision MUCH sooner.

The other thing I am wondering is - how about the people who purchased tickets to attend thinking they were going to see a $9 million dirt race and a $6 million turf race? Do they get their money back? Somehow I doubt it.

Exactly. I have a feeling they didn’t get as many (possible) entires as they’d hoped & changed tactics to try & garner more interest in the races.
I, personally, think it’s going to backfire on them. Making changes this close to the race.
Guess we’ll see who still shows up LOL

Rick Porter agrees with you. He said Omaha Beach will be running regardless, but he thinks The Stronach Group couldn’t drum up enough entries when there was a $500,000 buy in to compete.

Yes, this was rather last minute. Not a good look business-wise.

It takes a speshul kind of moron to say, “gee, I can’t pay a million to get in, and see if I can win?” when they can participate, and make some nice money here in the states. I do not care if you have the second coming of Man O’ War or Secretariat, or the Bid…you get it, you pays your money, you takes your chances. It’s horse racing, baby!

@ASB Stars except these races are in the US  (thinking of Dubai World Cup?)

But yes, that was a ton of money for entry fee and seeing exclusivity in who gets in the gate. Plenty of other races here in NA with nice payouts

Agreed!

Chad Brown is also reconsidering entering his horses

Rough day today…

Spun to Run out with a skin rash.

Omaha Beach out in an abundance of caution after slight swelling in RH ankle. X-rayed, sent to Dr Bramlage for his opinion. Questionable area at the beginning of the canon bone.

If Mongolian Groom had anything to do with the emphasis on the abundance of caution that scratched Omaha Beach, his death was not in vain. Sad that Omaha Beach was scratched, owner Rick Porter confirmed Omaha Beach is now officially retired, not sad that he was scratched if there is indeed something starting to happen in that RH cannon bone (Bramlage couldn’t guarantee it wasn’t the real deal but I agree with the decision).

I wonder how many will actually make it to the gate come race day…
