Pegasus World . . .

Well it ain’t going to get good ratings when nobody outside of the industry and regular bettors knows it’s going to be on broadcast TV.

On the outside post for CC, would you think the statistically poor performance from that slot might be skewed by the lack of a more evenly matched field? Maybe not hurt the inside post either? Really, nothing except Keen Ice interests me but I don’t know what his recent outings have been like. I’m one of those more casual fans who prefers to bet locally and can’t for this one anyway. Bummer.

Don’t think I would get too bummed about CC post position. This is a horse that won the richest race in the world with a saddle girth grasping for his masculine identity while being chased by the best horses in the world. That not only says something about his heart and his athleticism but says a great deal about his mental maturity. It is the mental maturity that will win the PWC for CC.

Connections react to pp draw.

Does anyone know offhand what time the NBC broadcast begins, as well as post time? Thanks.

Sat January 28th starting at 4:30 pm EST NBC coverage until 6pm
Post time for the Pegasus is at 5:40 pm

This 23 minute video overview of the race is fun. Arrogate really has the big stride. But I am most impressed with that Pegasus statue at Gulfstream. Has anyone seen it in person, and is it as big as it looks?

Why do they keep referring to Arrogate’s win in the Classic as an “upset”?
A 7/4 2nd fav beats the 5/6 fav, hardly an upset.

Latest news on Arrogate… he’s been fitted with a 3/4 shoe on his right hind due to having had a small abcess recently.
Doesn’t seem to have hindered his training at alli

“Arrogate did develop an abscess on the inside of his right hind foot a few weeks ago. Baffert pointed out on Thursday, when Arrogate was paddock schooling before the races, that he has three-quartered that hind shoe – filing off the part of the shoe nearest the abscess – a common tactic used to try to prevent the abscess from being concussed by the shoe and becoming a quarter crack.
He’s been marching right along, no excuses,” Baffert said."

As best said on twitter: No excuses … but hey let me point out this shoe and abscess just in case he does lose

Some odds and ends:

Correction with it being sold out: Not quite. Per the Sun-Sentinel (1/27/17)

Even at $100 for general admission, Ritvo said early in the week that more than 13,000 tickets had been sold, and he was expecting to reach projected capacity of 17,500. Premium seating with a view of the racecourse was sold out, some going for as much as $765 a seat.

Interesting comments regards the Pegasus and the future from the Stronach organization:

1 - There is some discussion of perhaps of adopting a Breeders’ Cup (or even the original Sunshine Millions) style of rotating tracks albeit within the Stronach family. So Maryland or California maybe getting a turn. However this late January date on the schedule makes Laurel Park (even in its fine restored state) a hard proposal for success.

2 - They might do a Pegasus World Cup Turf version as a companion offering.

Isn’t Maryland proposing something similar with the return of the D.C. International Invitational? It requires a large stake buy-in ($500k I believe) and they’re tentatively saying it will be just one-entry per country. So just 1 runner from Eng, FR, GER, ITA, JPN, US, CDN etc

Plumcreek: Haven’t seen it, but this BH article says it’s about 11 stories high.

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/219127/stronach-still-seeking-new-heights-for-racing

TVG said that statue (forget the height) was second tallest statue in the US behind the Statue of Liberty

They’re pretty close to sold out. They marketed this as a “destination” event and it looks like they are succeeding.

While I’m all for the copper colored beauty that is California Chrome (his coat just dazzles in the sunlight!) I’m also pulling for Keen Ice. He’s a funny horse that I wouldn’t bet money on, but I’m going to enjoy seeing him in the mix.

I just haven’t gotten to the station for the Arrogate train. Beautiful horse, fantastic stride, but meh on my wow factor. Maybe this will be the race that will make me fall in love.

His Travers win didn’t make your jaw drop? One of the most impressive performances I’ve ever seen. 10f in 1:59.36 under a hand ride.

Horse is a monster.

What’s the story with the edit? Have they just given up on it?

Here is Arrogate’s Travers if you haven’t seen it… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaeZ2L9-mA0

Arrogate is a monster. And he’s comparatively inexperienced with only six starts, all as a 3yo. After a 3rd in his first race in April, he’s been undefeated. He went straight from Optional Claiming to the Travers. Horse is a speed freak.

The edit hasn’t worked on many devices since the patchwork fix after the great hack of 2016. It’s not going to work until they fully switch to a new platform for the whole site. Coming soon. Meanwhile we are getting better at proofreading.

Is there any livestream of the race for today?

The advertising is poor. I just went on the Pegasus website, www.pegasusworldcup.com, to get a look at the merchandise. There are some blah t-shirts and ball caps, and a few other things, but no posters (that I saw) and the logo for this first race is very plain.

What a contrast to the advertising for the Melbourne Cup which I saw last October when I was in Sydney (I saw the advertising, not the race). The art was gorgeous and the posters were all over the city, customized for various restaurants and businesses. It was really cool. I would imagine that this was representative of the other large cities in Australia.

Here is an example of a poster which would be in front of a restaurant. They were everywhere:
