The East coast should be looking at its own history.
It ain’t pretty.
I have to agree with that.
It’s like other ‘epidemics’ like ADHD, autism. Or kissing spines and neurological disorders in our horses.
It has always been there it’s just that we have better/broader recognition.
(Not at all lumping these conditions with sexual abuse, just the best analogy I could come up with quickly!)
I understand.
The whole thing is horrifying, but two particular details especially disturb me:
-
Buchanan was apparently involved in it, including planning a foursome,
-
The teacher seemingly dismissed the veracity of the essay and gave it an A-!!
Not to detract from the import and seriousness of this thread, but…,
The irony of this comment cannot be more amusing. Your posting style is often abrasive and confrontational, and not just on this thread. Me thinks the drama may start with you.
There’s terrible rumors about current trainers in the NW. Probably in most areas of the country, there are terrible rumors. And I would think that most people are unaware of indiscretions of their partners otherwise they would be in an open relationship. I feel like it’s the quality of horses and riders that they produce, the winning that their barn does, that drives people to continue to gossip and accuse this barn, trainers, and riders of all kinds of falsehoods.
That part was quite painful to read.
Really?? They’re just jealous?
Lol. I am from the PNW and there are several barns with lovely horses who are not gossiped about - at least not about trainers involved with child abuse. Not to mention the fact that JC had to provide to pay his victims. That’s not gossip.
I rode with gay trainers and my mom still came to every single lesson and every horse show. It’s a unique industry when we send our children off to live with these trainers on the road. Not everyone does of course, but it is very common. Parents have to pay more attention and do better, too.
I have no idea why there seems to be a perception of certain geographic locations being seemingly over represented when it comes to SS sanctions. Perhaps it has to do with Rob Gage, Jimmy Williams and a culture shift on the West Coast. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that the people named on that coast are big names, while on the East Coast, the only really big name to my knowledge is George Morris. Perhaps it has to do with Me Too largely originating and centering around Hollywood (West Coast). Who knows…
All I know is, it’s about damned time.
I do wonder about “open secrets”, though. There were plenty of rumors and open secrets when I was growing up on the West Coast. Granted, I don’t have the same connections that I had in those days, but I don’t hear about those rumors or open secrets as an adult. Is it because I am not showing? Because I am not as socially connected at the higher levels of sport? Or because I am an adult? I have to think the latter, because I hear plenty of other gossip from the circuit.
I guess I just wonder who knew about those rumors and open secrets? Was it just kids? Or were adults turning a blind eye too?
Adults had to turn a blind eye, and they did.
Remember, we are comparing rumors. And that’s just what they are.
I totally agree! Parents need to stay involved with their children, go to their lessons, shows, games (depending on the sport). I would never give my under age children a key to an apartment and let them train far from their home, but many parents do in this sport.
Did they HAVE to?
They had to, for the child molesters to be able to get away with molesting children continuously.
What are you talking about?
Are you referring to the people who have been banned by safe sport after extensive investigations?
Or the people who have been arrested by the police and are awaiting trial?
I wouldn’t call those rumors.

The wife of the Oregon trainer has been telling everyone she had no clue about his indiscretions. Ya, right!!! One of the girls was living in her house when all this was going on. Plus his terrible behavior was well known in the horse community for over a decade.
This is what I was responding to in both of my posts.
Agreed on both counts.
With respect to the teacher… sadly… I am not surprised and not enough has changed. I’ve been watching news recently regarding a lawsuit against Fairfax County Public Schools involving a 12 year old girl who was assaulted at school, repeatedly, by other students who were part of a broader gang related human trafficking ring. The girl went to multiple staff members for help. They all ignored and minimized her pleas for help.
12 yrs old. And targeted for human trafficking AT SCHOOL. And no one stepped up and protected her.
