Peppers Pride: 19 19-0-0 formally retired to the shed .. in KY

I’m not sure if there is “big game” to be had in Sun Land, NM (10 minutes west of El Paso, TX) although they did just have the noted Winstar Derby a few weeks ago. Anyhow, 4-yr old filly Peppers Pride born in New Mexico and racing at that track is now 9 for 9 lifetime with 6 of them being stakes races.

DRF Mar 24, 2007 noted that she won the $100,000 Sydney Valentini Handicap on Sat (3/24). She was carrying 124 lbs for the 1-mile race.

Ridden by Carlos Madeira, Peppers Pride covered the distance in 1:38.42. She paid $4.80 for the win; inexplicably she was not the favorite. The winner’s share of $60,000 pushes her career earnings to $476,645 from those nine wins in as many starts.

The El Paso newspaper, The Border Observer, covered her 8th victory last month in an allowance over over mares with photo of the effort: Photo: Pepper’s Pride Unbeaten (8 for 8)

Good for her!

I’m pretty sure that that picture that goes with that article is not of the horse/race in question. Looks like a QH race. Have you ever seen a mile race finish with horses spread out across the track? On a straight European course maybe, but not in the US.

Valid observation and they do have QH races predominantly there at Sun Land. That article - as I failed to cite - was published 2007-02-22

So, will the real Pepper’s Pride please stand up so that we can see her

Well on Pedigree Query it has a photo of her. (although you shouldn’t really bank of the validity of Pedigree Query) http://www.pedigreequery.com/peppers+pride

Wow! Great for her!!

Some of her race videos are on the Calracing site. She’s an amazing closer. The picture on her pedigreequery looks correct – in all the videos she’s got a white shadow roll and the silks are red.

She’s now 10 for 10!

As spied by Equidaily.com

The gal has now a record of 10 starts and 10 wins with her victory on Sunday!

Peppers Pride remains perfect

FARMINGTON - Undefeated horses don’t come along very often. The odds just don’t work out that well.

When one considers that the natural odds of any horse winning just three races in a row is about 4-to-1, then the story of Peppers Pride is starting to take on some much more significant detail.

Peppers Pride, a New Mexico-bred filly by Desert God, extended her career unbeaten streak to 10 with a hard-fought victory over Skirt Alert in Saturday’s $79,600 New Mexico Distaff Handicap at SunRay Park and Casino.

Trained by Joel Marr, Peppers Pride was ridden to victory by Carlos Madeira, who has been her pilot since she broke her maiden on July 16, 2005.

Victories in the La Senora Handicap at Sunland Park and the New Mexico Filly Cup at Zia Park last year have only enhanced the reputation of Peppers Pride, who made her SunRay Park debut an impressive one. She covered 6 and one-half furlongs in 1 minute 17 and 2/5 seconds, equalling her fastest time at that distance in her career.

Saturday’s score increased Peppers Pride’s lifetime earnings to over $524,000 for her owner H. Joe Allen. Hallowed Dreams is the current standard-bearer among lifetime winning streaks. The Louisiana-bred filly won her first 16 starts, the longest such streak in modern day racing history. Personal Ensign, considered to be by many the finest racehorse to ever retire unbeaten, won her first 13 starts before retiring in 1989 after winning the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

Realizing history is another step closer each time Peppers Pride steps onto the track, Marr remains light-hearted about the whole matter.

“We just take things one race at a time,” Marr said after Saturday’s winners circle ceremony. “She tells us when she’s ready to go and we just let her do her thing.”

Early in the NM Distaff Handicap, Peppers Pride raced in close contention to the leader Bay View Sue while a bit wide down the backstretch. Madeira launched his bid aboard Peppers Pride as the field hit the far turn, engaging the leader at the head of the stretch.

Skirt Alert rallied on the outside of Peppers Pride as those two seperated themselves from the rest of the field. At the wire, Peppers Pride had a long neck in front of Skirt Alert, who surprisingly was sent off as the slight favorite in the race despite Peppers Pride’s win streak.

There’s no immediate timetable for Peppers’ next start, but it seems obvious to most that her next start will be followed closely as she continues on her quest towards racing immortality.

WOW! Must be an Amazing horse! I am going to go see if I can find some of her races on the internet. Just, WOW!

Calracing.com [via their race replay feature] has some of her racing efforts, but none since her March effort. Oddly that effort of last weekend is not even listed (typically it would be grayed out if unavailable) …

I went to Calracing and saw that…
But, I forgot that the Mac didn’t have the video program to watch the race, so my night is booked for race watching

Nov 11th … going for #13

Bloodhorse “Peppers Pride Chases 13th Straight”

Joe Allen’s homebred Peppers Pride puts her 12-race streak on the line in the $170,000 Championship Fillies and Mares, a six-furlong sprint in which 12 are entered. She is chasing the modern-day record of 16 wins to begin a career held jointly by Mister Frisky and Hallowed Dreams. Peppers Pride has enjoyed her success racing entirely against state breds.

Trained by Joel Marr, the 4-year-old daughter of Desert God-Lady Pepper (by Chilli Pepper Pie) has won at each of the previous New Mexico Cup events, taking the Juvenile Filly race in 2005 and the Filly Championship last year. The dark bay scored a dominating seven-length win of a Zia Park allowance race Oct. 22 in preparation for this. A lifetime earner of $572,465, she is 4-for-4 at the Hobbs track.

This mare is the poster child for homebreds and regional breeding, too. With the exception of her full brother (also a SW of over $100k), this is an obscure pedigree that most “experts” would ridicule a breeder for.

I know she isn’t running against the best company, but isn’t this what horse racing is about? Winning races? I’d rather have a cheaply bred Peppers Pride than a stellarly (is that a word?) bred The Green Monkey. This horse should give regional breeders delight.

Good for her and her connections! I think this is great!

And, yes, SleepyFox I totally agree with your post… I mean, after all, how many of us could ever imagine owning such an expensive horse as TGM? Pepper seems to be a great horse! Beauty (expense) is, as beauty (expense) does…

Not to steal any of the limelight from Peppers Pride, but there is a Canadian mare who is also racing this weekend in a litmus test of her own winning streak: Monashee.

ESPN “Hastings regular Monashee steps up to Woodbine-level”

Out of Hastings Park in British Columbia, Canada, the 5-year-old mare by Wolf Power has won 11 straight, all of them stakes races. She hasn’t lost since May 2006, is 17-for-22 lifetime, has won under 130 pounds and so towered over her competition in her last start that she paid $2.10 when winning the Ballerina Stakes at Hastings, a five-eighths track in Vancouver.

Monashee faces 11 others in Saturday’s [Nov 10] $175,000 Maple Leaf Stakes at Woodbine.

Purchased for a mere $14,000 (CND) as a yearling, I’m sure she’s brought her owners more thrills then most million dollar Keeneland auction horses.

So we have two gals who, while not facing anything near Grade 1 company, each are looking to extend their unbeaten streaks this weekend. Good luck to them both!

Right about now, I would be head over heels happy with a 12 race win streak in $2500 claimers. I may need a map to the winner’s circle its been so long.
Best of luck to both noble fillies.

Both these mares are just awesome. Congrats to all the connections. Beauty definitely is as beauty does.

I remember one of the very first things that was said to me on my first day working at the track:

“It’s really hard to win a race. That’s why everyone goes crazy when they do.”

I’m pretty sure the assistant trainer was just trying to explain all the hungover people and empty liquor bottles around the barn to my nervous, teenaged self, though!

what a great story! and clearly, they’re doing right by their horses (and are being nicely rewarded.)

This goes off as the 8th race at 4:28 pm EST SAT; Monashee breaks from the #2 PP and this is at 1 1/4 mi on the all-weather track.

TVG doesn’t air Woodbine races, maybe HRTV does.

Pepper’s Pride run’s Sunday (Nov 10) in the 9th race “New Mexico Cup Classic Championship Stakes” which goes off at 4:09 CST

9 horses in that race which should be aired on TVG

calracing.com/replays has the replay - sorry to break it to folks but the streak in Canada is over …

What is odd is the audio from Woodbine. It sounds like all of four guys are there watching the race.
