Regarding Pepper’s Pride next start in March 2008 - $100,000 Sydney Valentini for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares at Sunland:
“You’re going to have a bigger field and new bunch of fresh horses,” said Joel Marr, who trains Peppers Pride. “There’s new blood in the 3-year-olds, and there’s always a chance for horses to get better. It’s going to get tougher.”
With the Valentini not until March 23, and with Peppers Pride just two wins shy of equaling the modern mark of 16 consecutive wins shared by Cigar, Citation, Hallowed Dreams, and Mister Frisky, Marr and the filly’s owner, Joe Allen, have some tough decisions to make. On Monday, Marr said he would explore options outside New Mexico.
“We’d like to stay here,” he said. "We’d like to run in that race in March. That would be our first choice. But there’s a limit to how much weight we’re going to spot the rest of the horses, and a limit to the weight that she’s going to carry, for her own health and safety. So, it just all depends on those things.
“A lot of things are up in the air right now. Mainly, we’re just concerned about her, making sure she’s healthy and ready to go if we decide to go somewhere. Or if we stay and we’re not going to run until March, she’s going to get a little break.”
As for hitting 16 straight wins, Marr is not looking too far ahead.
“We’ll think about 15 next, and let the chips fall where they may,” he said. “It would be something special, but we can’t get there until we get through the next two, so were going to take them one at a time.”
It’s nice that is seems they area truly concerned for her welfare and not just chasing a record.
Pepper’s connections are so much nicer than the trainer in Puerto Rico or wherever who has the horse with the longest losing streak, Dona Chepa… that horse was declared unraceable by the vet, but he said he was STILL going to try to run her another couple times “just because.” :rolleyes:
I looked at her pedigree and thought it was really nice. Did you mean it was not commercially(sale) good? If so, why? Seems successful on both sides and the pics of the sire make him look gorgeous. Clearly I am a tb sporthorse lover and not up on fashion in racing!

No, her pedigree is not commercially attractive at all. She’s by an unraced, regional sire out of a dam by a non-blacktype sire. The whole bottom half of her pedigree might as well just read “Who???” for the first 3 generations. :winkgrin:
She is the poster girl for state-bred programs, though. I always love to see horses with non-traditional paper have success.
It just shows sometimes some really enjoyable racing comes from horses by Who? out of Never Heard of Her (Or Her Daddy).

I’ve certainly heard of the sire. He was donated to the University of Arizona Horse Program and I bred my TB mare to him in 1996 and have the subsequent foal. My mare looks almost identical to Pepper’s Pride only she has a nicer head.
Desert God is fairly consistent in what he throws. He was unraced due to supposedly OCD in his shoulder. He came to the U of A when he was two and only left a few years ago. If I told you how cheaply he sold for you would be aghast since his stud fee is supposedly more than his purchase price

Peppers Pride, a 5-year-old mare who is unbeaten in 14 starts, will try to take another step closer to history in Sunday’s $100,000 Sydney Valentini Handicap at Sunland Park. The mile race, for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares 3 years old and up, drew a field of seven.
Peppers Pride, owned by Joseph Allen and trained by Joel Marr, hasn’t raced since capturing the New Mexico Racing Commission Handicap here Dec.o16. That was by design, however, as Marr specifically said after that race that the Valentini was her next target.
A victory Sunday would get Peppers Pride within one win of the modern-day record of 16 consecutive victories. The record is shared by Cigar, Citation, Hallowed Dreams, and Mister Frisky.

I would assume the writers only failed to qualify this as being a modern North American record. No ill will intended. It is not unlike the oft cited stat of Cigar as holding the highest earning TB - that too is just for NA. The Japanese runner something or other Opera (yea the name escapes me now) has more earnings.

Peppers Pride takes another step toward making history when she goes in search of her 15th consecutive win in Sunday’s $100,000 Sydney Valentini Handicap at Sunland Park.
The mile race, for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares, drew a field of seven, and the 5-year-old Peppers Pride carries high weight of 125 pounds.
The competition:
The new threat is Good Looker RF. Trained by Armando Quintanilla Jr., the 4-year-old Good Looker RF comes off two straight stakes victories. She won the New Mexico Cup Filly at Zia Park on Nov. 11 and then the La Coneja Handicap locally on Dec. 22. All her action has been sprinting, so she tries a new game here.
That sprint speed likely puts her on or near the lead early and may allow her to get first run on Peppers Pride. Ken Tohill rides at 120 pounds.
Theregoesdancer has become something of punching bag for Peppers Pride. She was beaten by Peppers Pride in seven straight races from October 2006 to November 2007, finishing second to that rival on five of those occasions. After spending so much fuel chasing Peppers Pride, Theregoesdancer was a modest fifth sprinting on Feb. 8. She makes her first start for trainer Jimmie Claridge, who adds blinkers. Glen Murphy rides.
Wild Gini comes into the race in peak form, having won three in a row and four of her last five. She has done all her work sprinting against claiming and allowance foes, so the distance and class level here are hurdles.
