Lincoln Handicap Race Postponed!

History will have to wait for mother nature

Assoc Press/New York Times 7-27-08 “Rains cancel Sunday races at Ruidoso Downs”

A New Mexico mare’s attempt at a record 17 victories in 17 starts was delayed when Ruidoso Downs postponed Sunday’s races because of rain.

Peppers Pride had been entered in the 10th race, the 6-furlong Lincoln Handicap for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares. But Ruidoso Downs rescheduled the Zia Festival racing program after the remnants of Hurricane Dolly dropped more than six inches of rain in the area.

The races now are scheduled for Saturday, but Peppers Pride trainer Joel Marr said the mare might not run next weekend.

“It depends on if we get to train between now and then. … If we don’t have a place to train, we can’t run,” he said Sunday.

The track flooded two years ago, but Marr said this time is far worse.

Good grief, for a brief moment the way the Blood Horse worded it, (“Hurricane Dolly rains on Peppers parade”) I thought Hurricane Dolly was a horse! Whew!

Too many variables: the high weight with such a high spread between her and others, the lack of training time, and if this track is off at all.

Marr mentioned the $50,000 Carlos Salazar at 6 1/2 furlongs at the Downs at Albuquerque on Aug. 17 as a likely option for Peppers Pride’s next start.

Looks like she’ll be making her 17th start at the end of the month … althogh it appears there is some confusion if its Aug 30th or 31st.

The Lincoln Handicap has now been rescheduled for Sunday, August 30.

Correction on the date

Undefeated five-year-old mare Peppers Pride will try for a record-breaking 17th straight win on August 31 when she contests the Lincoln Handicap at Ruidoso Downs.

"It affected us quite a bit,” trainer Joel Marr said of the rain. “We lost training, but she has had two good works since them.”

She has not raced since winning the Russell and Hellen Foutz Distaff Handicap on April 26 at SunRay Park.

TVG will air the race live.

Only TVG will air it live. If she does break the record just maybe the race will be replayed elsewhere. I was vocal that the NTRA - regardless if this occurs in a semi-off-the-radar racing state like NM - should do more to promote fan enthusiasm. Having the race (even on a 10-minute delayed basis) shown on their website is the least they could’ve worked up.

Some have compared Peppers Pride’s run to a minor league baseball record because she has never raced outside New Mexico, all of her starts have been against fillies and mares and she’s never run on a sloppy track.

“Doesn’t matter,” Bob Baffert said. “It’s significant. It’s very difficult to win, no matter what. It’s tougher in open company but it still takes a great horse to go out and win every time.”

“I don’t have the money to play with a lot of the big people,” [Owner Joe Allen] said. “From a financial standpoint, this just makes more sense. We can get her beat. We know that. Our objective is to retire her sound.”

Should she win this weekend, Marr said he’d view it as a team victory. He credits his owner, jockey, farrier, groom and veterinarian — “You consult your cabinet,” he said, before adding, “It would be hers more than ours.”
