Peppers Pride: 19 19-0-0 formally retired to the shed .. in KY

Go away Doll
Anyone hear any squeeling, moaning, whines? Nope but PP will be carrying significant weight for the undefeated gal. Just 1-lb less then Curlin did at Churchill for the Stephen Foster Handicap when he gave 11 pounds to his rival. Peppers Pride will be giving at least 11 lbs to her rivals.

DRF July 22, 2008 “Peppers Pride assigned 127 pounds for attempt at record”
Everyone hope an pray that doll goes more south, or ruidoso will have rain this weekend!!!

Yep - weather concerns exist so maybe/maybe not she’ll run

BloodHorse 7-24 “Weather Could Alter Peppers Pride Plans”

“She is not going to run on an off track. She’s never done it before and it doesn’t seem like the right time to try it,” Marr said July 23.

[snip]

And Hallowed Dreams, who like Peppers Pride was undefeated in her first 16 starts while facing mostly Louisiana-bred opposition, finished third behind Sparkles of Luck in a stakes race established specifically for the record run by Evangeline Downs in 2000.

Internationally, Hong Kong’s Silent Witness won 17 in succession before losing to Bullish Luck in the 2005 Champion’s Mile (HK-I). Ajax won 18 straight races in Australia during the 1930s.

Lincoln Handicap Race Postponed!

History will have to wait for mother nature

Assoc Press/New York Times 7-27-08 “Rains cancel Sunday races at Ruidoso Downs”

A New Mexico mare’s attempt at a record 17 victories in 17 starts was delayed when Ruidoso Downs postponed Sunday’s races because of rain.

Peppers Pride had been entered in the 10th race, the 6-furlong Lincoln Handicap for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares. But Ruidoso Downs rescheduled the Zia Festival racing program after the remnants of Hurricane Dolly dropped more than six inches of rain in the area.

The races now are scheduled for Saturday, but Peppers Pride trainer Joel Marr said the mare might not run next weekend.

“It depends on if we get to train between now and then. … If we don’t have a place to train, we can’t run,” he said Sunday.

The track flooded two years ago, but Marr said this time is far worse.

Good grief, for a brief moment the way the Blood Horse worded it, (“Hurricane Dolly rains on Peppers parade”) I thought Hurricane Dolly was a horse! Whew!

I’d all but assume that her connections will skip on the rescheduled Lincoln Handicap for this 1st weekend of August. BloodHorse “Peppers Pride May Skip Rescheduled Race”

Too many variables: the high weight with such a high spread between her and others, the lack of training time, and if this track is off at all.

Marr mentioned the $50,000 Carlos Salazar at 6 1/2 furlongs at the Downs at Albuquerque on Aug. 17 as a likely option for Peppers Pride’s next start.

Looks like she’ll be making her 17th start at the end of the month … althogh it appears there is some confusion if its Aug 30th or 31st.

Peppers Pride goes for record Aug. 31

The Lincoln Handicap has now been rescheduled for Sunday, August 30.

Correction on the date

TB Times 8/23

Undefeated five-year-old mare Peppers Pride will try for a record-breaking 17th straight win on August 31 when she contests the Lincoln Handicap at Ruidoso Downs.

"It affected us quite a bit,” trainer Joel Marr said of the rain. “We lost training, but she has had two good works since them.”

She has not raced since winning the Russell and Hellen Foutz Distaff Handicap on April 26 at SunRay Park.

TVG will air the race live.

Very exciting! A shame I don’t get TVG :frowning:

Post Positions for Sunday’s record attempt are drawn:

$67,500 Lincoln Handicap (Race 10, 4:12 p.m. Mountain),
New Mexico-Bred Fillies & Mares 3 & Up, 6 Furlongs

PP. Horse, Weight, Jockey

  1. Mega Dome, 113, Mark A. Villa
    2. Peppers Pride, 127, Carlos D. Madeira
  2. Miss Possibility, 116, Joe A. Martinez
  3. Good Looker R F, 117, Alfredo J. Juarez, Jr.
  4. Charlie’s Pizzazz, 115, Alejandro Medellin
  5. Silver Expression, 117, Miguel A. Perez
  6. Complete Pride, 114, Jorge M. Bourdieu
  7. Let the Musicbegin, 116, Ricardo Jaime

Damn - look at that weight … spotting as much as 14-lbs and least is 10-lbs. If she wins it won’t be served to her on a silver platter, thats for sure.

Pepper’s Pride: Lifetime 16 16-0-0 and earnings of $861,665

Well I’ll be rooting for her in TN!

I’m not 100% sure she won’t be a late scratch the track is very sloppy. An off track is something her connections have been against running on all along.

Confirmed just minutes ago: SCRATCHED from the Lincoln Handicap (Aug 31)

TVG just confirmed the scratch. Another day, maybe.

:frowning: Bummer.

But her connections seem to know what is best for her.

Shoot.

I was hoping she’d break the record for my birthday.

Happy Birthday, Barnfairy!

Game on: Pepper’s Pride entered into an allowance race at Zia Park, Sat Oct 4th

Awesome! I was wondering about her… Good luck to her! Wonder if the race will be televised?!?

Good luck to Pepper!

Wonder if the race will be televised?!?
Only TVG will air it live. If she does break the record just maybe the race will be replayed elsewhere. I was vocal that the NTRA - regardless if this occurs in a semi-off-the-radar racing state like NM - should do more to promote fan enthusiasm. Having the race (even on a 10-minute delayed basis) shown on their website is the least they could’ve worked up.

AP 10-2-08 “Baffert: Record counts for New Mexico thoroughbred”

Some have compared Peppers Pride’s run to a minor league baseball record because she has never raced outside New Mexico, all of her starts have been against fillies and mares and she’s never run on a sloppy track.

“Doesn’t matter,” Bob Baffert said. “It’s significant. It’s very difficult to win, no matter what. It’s tougher in open company but it still takes a great horse to go out and win every time.”

“I don’t have the money to play with a lot of the big people,” [Owner Joe Allen] said. “From a financial standpoint, this just makes more sense. We can get her beat. We know that. Our objective is to retire her sound.”

Should she win this weekend, Marr said he’d view it as a team victory. He credits his owner, jockey, farrier, groom and veterinarian — “You consult your cabinet,” he said, before adding, “It would be hers more than ours.”
