PLEASE fix COTH!

I am so tired of the glitches and problems this website is having. Sometimes it won’t let me scroll down a thread. Most of the time when it lets me access a thread at all, it does so on the last page instead of at the first post. Other times, like now, it won’t let me do anything at all – start a thread, post on a thread, access any thread, or even X out of the site. And whenever I have to log on, this seriously annoying ad pops up asking me to subscribe to the magazine. There is no way for me to post that I DO NOT want to subscribe to the magazine.

I don’t know what the problem is, unless it is COTH’s sudden inability to manage its own website or any of its functions. I enjoyed COTH for years on the old site. I don’t know why COTH changed to this new one, but I am fed up.

COTHers occasionally notice that a longtime poster has disappeared. They wonder why.

I bet a lot of their reasons are this horrible new website and the inability of the current management team to correct any of the problems.

Odd, I don’t have any of those problems at all. The scroll lock thing has 100% resolved. I have no problems accessing a thread. Clicking the thread title always takes me to the first post, clicking the little circle to the left of the thread title takes me to the first unread, and clicking the square off to the right goes to the last post. Clicking on a thread title from the parent forum page goes to the last post. That all is working exactly as it’s supposed to. I stay logged in, but is it surprising that a free website is going to prompt you to pay for their other services? Certainly not.

Maybe if you share your platform information with the mods, they can help you troubleshoot the issues you’re having.

No problems here any more?
Even the super slow posting time has now been fixed, rarely takes more than some seconds now.

I too wonder if it is some kind of glitch in your access mode?
If they can figure that, it would help fix it for all that may have that problem.

Details on how you are using COTH, thru a phone or pad or laptop and which kind and what program, etc.?

They need to know to try to fix it.
Thanks for bringing this up.

I’m sorry to hear you’re still having so many problems! I’m glad you let us know, because we haven’t been aware of any large-scale major issues like the ones you described persisting.

To echo Simkie and Bluey, to start, could you please let me know what platform you’re using to access the site, and what Internet browser and version. Also, could you try clearing the cookies for the site, to make sure there’s nothing wonky there?

Here’s one site that gives tutorials for different browsers.

Thanks so much!

I find the scroll locking is because of the ads loading! Finally figured that one out.

I have that privacy badger thing running on the desktop… blocks all those ads are in the middle of a forum…

like others I have seen no site problems for a very long time

Just going to add to the list of ‘no issues of this type’ people.

I don’t have any issues I have adblocker plus on Chrome though.

I am on a now older MacBookPro laptop, running Safari 10.1.2 and not any extras, no other pop-up and ad blockers than come with it standard.

Don’t seem to have any issues, other than the rare post held over for review, generally due to some link the filters don’t like?
Rare, only happened 2-3 times.

i’m using Chrome on Windows 10(?) [newest one] and I’m having the same problem as Rackonteur, with the freezing only occurring since the end of last week, and mostly on the Dressage Forum(since the Del Mar ‘incident’, actually) but it is happening on other fora; once the freezing begins on dressage it carries over to the others. If I open a forum other than Dressage first I can browse UNTIL I go the Dressage forum.
However, the other issues have been occurring since the latest upgrade. I’ve learned to deal with it, but it would be nice to actually go straight to the 1st unread post and not one I’ve read the day or two before!
When it first froze I did clear my cookies, but it didn’t make a difference.
Thanks!

This sounds like maybe it’s an ad triggering the problem, which is certainly not without precedent. Have you noticed any common ads that are in view when the screen freezes? Anything playing a video, or making noise? Can you do a trial with an ad blocker, to see if the problem resolves?

I’m having ongoing problems with my posts being unapproved. It’s very aggravating.

@Simkie
No I have not noticed any ads in particular, or noise, but then they are all off-screen to the right. All I see is the thread box, with just the thinnest edge of the ads off to the right. I physically have to scroll my page over if I want to see ads or the headlines or most popular.
I’ll take some time and play with an ad-blocker too. Thanks for the suggestions.

Depending on where I am I may be accessing it on a dell laptop running Windows 7 and Chrome, an iPad running Safari, or an iMac running Firefox. I really haven’t run into any issues either.

I use Chrome. I’ve used Chrome for years and only started having these problems within the last week or two. I’ve had this particular laptop for just over two years now and never had these problems before. The only ad that pops up is that annoying COTH one, wanting me to subscribe to the mag. I would think that the COTH site would be sophisticated enough that by now it would have “realized” I never subscribe, but no. It just keeps popping up whenever I have to log in.

The problems change over time, so I seriously doubt it’s my computer causing them. I’ve never had the problem of having my posts “unapproved,” but I have had several other problems, that, as I said, change from time to time. So yes, I’m pretty sure it’s the website coming up with different glitches, rather than the same computer and Chrome that I’ve been using for quite a long time. Especially since I don’t have any of these problems on other sites and BBs.

Have you had a chance to clear the cookies for the site to see if that helps the problem?

Thanks!

FWIW, COTH or any other website can’t “fix” a problem until they know more precisely what is broken.

The challenge for COTH et al is when some users have an issue and other users don’t using what appears to be the same configuration.

Hence the questions… what is different between the users with problems and the users who don’t have problems (why all the sometimes nit picky questions).

A website is a complex piece of software with thousands and thousands of lines of code; some written by vBulletin and some written by COTH. The issue could be related to a specific post (see the “Can’t quote, can’t ‘like’ a post” thread) or it could be related to the ads or a specific ad or it could be related to some link to a COTH article to just name a few.

:encouragement:

I clear the browsing data frequently. That is supposed to clear cookies as well.

The site was working OK earlier. Now it is locking up again.
