Please, saddle gurus: wide wither & spine ideas

Another vote for EQ - their Encore tree works great on my wide horse with a short back and big shoulders. And the panels I think are more forgiving because of their design. They look a bit funky but it’s not so noticeable when you’re in the saddle.

Second choice is BC for the reasons started above. The serge panels are super nice and make a huge difference.

Since there seem to be several of us in this boat, I’ll report back, with apologies for going on and on to everyone else.

I’m curious to try the Prestige jump saddles because in the Philosophy - the one in my barn the fitter told me I should try - his walk was really good, til I picked up the reins, and then he got very sticky. He was stickier than in my Amerigo at trot. I think the balance is further back than he wants.

The County was a no go from the get go. Sticky sticky sticky - but again I think it puts me too far back.

Ugh. Horses! LOL

My erreplus arrived and it has exceeded my expectations. I also have a prestige dressage saddle and will now be looking for an erreplus replacement :grimacing: the fit for my wide guy is much better with the SL panels and I love the lifetime tree warranty.

I have a Meyer for my wide mare and despite it looking good and seeming to work well in the beginning, it is definitely not working for her particular shape. Hoping I can sell it on.

I’ve tried Prestige, Equipe, County, Custom, Albion, and Black Country on her so far and been disappointed. Prestige was the closest of that bunch and I’m considering trying a different model to see if that helps but it definitely still wasn’t right. I’ve been very frustrated with the lack of helpful saddle fitting options around me too. I really would like to try an Erreplus on her. I tried one on a different horse last year that it didn’t work for and I didn’t love it for me but I think it might work for her. I’d love to find one with a forward flap and see if that helps me like it better. I’d also like to try an Amerigo but haven’t been able to find one used that is in a width and flap configuration that would even come close to working for us both.

For my current horse I love my Stubben Ascend. I am the only person in the barn that needs to put a half pad under my saddle to protect it on the saddle stand. My horse is a appendix QH. We have many warmbloods.
Mine is custom only because I need a forward flap. It fits many of the warmbloods. One I use shims in the back. My Appendix isn’t that wide in the back but he has wide shoulders. Therefore he is a 31 inch for a Stubben when I factor in a half pad. His saddle fits a number of the much broader warmbloods.

:joy:  :

Would you post pics of the front and channel? From the few photos I’ve seen, they look more of the U-shaped tree that mine seems to do best in.

@wanderlust Like this or upsidedown?

Would love to see the underside!

Is the bottom one the one that you just ordered?

These are photos readily available. This is a 34 tree

I have both saddles

Would you be willing to share a few photos of your horse that likes the Erreplus, here or privately? I’m trying to decide whether to take one on trial and the whole process makes me want to pull out my hair. I’m hoping to narrow it down a bit before I spend (an additional) fortune in shipping and restock fees.

Tried it in jeans when it arrived as we had a schooling booked the next day. Pics and videos.

That is super helpful, thank you! And you guys look great!

I find it rides a touch smaller than the amerigo so you could potentially size up if you found something used/ a demo depending on your shape. I could obviously loose some fluff.

My goodness those are some wide withers and a table back!

Checking back in to update. After a really frustrating summer I have a Prestige Rubino on trial. I liked a friend’s Meredith years ago so tried that first and didn’t really like it but the horse went better in it than other saddles so I was steeling myself to just deal, and then I sat in the Rubino. Ahhhh. Looks like Prestige has figured out making a saddle with a narrow twist that a wide withered horse likes. We’ll see if he keeps liking it, but it feels really good to have something to sit in. Anyone familiar with that model? It’s a new one (of course it is - sigh) so haven’t found any intel on it long term.

Would love to hear what saddle you think might fit this back! We just had an assessment from a well respected independent fitter and have a saddle on trial but curious to hear your suggestions

I’m no help at all! Top photo looks like my guy, but in the bottom it looks like your guy’s bulgier at the withers than mine. There’s a lot of info on here though. I tried unsuccessfully to find an Amerigo Largo and couldn’t even find a demo to try, so can’t speak to that. The prestige I have has some flexibility in the tree that’s supposed to give them more room to come up in the withers, and has a nice wide gullet which my guy likes. He hated Forestier and County. Good luck!

I’m so glad you found something that works for your boy! We are up against it, as our guy’s current saddle does not fit at. all.

He’s recently back from rehab with an entirely new body shape and the old (but practically brand new ) saddle was causing significant discomfort through his withers, shoulder and back

I had the same problem. I ride nearly all my horses in a Prestige Meredith. Tried a wider Meredith on my new horse, the less wide Meredith didn’t work for. (Had one of my older Merediths widened, as you can do with Prestige saddles.) Still didn’t work, since now too wide for my dainty hips. So I was going to fall off, even though my horse seems semi-ok in the wider Meredith. Solved the issue very well, by buying a new Prestige Michel Robert. Same smaller size, (33), as my Meredith I fit in. But fits horse differently than the Meredith, but also fits me. Solved my issue. Maybe it would solve yours. Lovely saddle.
