PNWers-- Sell me a horse! Update: PPE vet near Poulsbo, WA?

Not to be the Debbie Downer of the PNW, but isn’t the point of this thread (for posters to show you horses for sale) sort of tap-dancing on the edge of violating COTH advertising rules? CANTER horses is one thing (don’t forget to check out CANTER WA if you’re headed north), but blatantly posting sales horses is a bit of another…

The FB group Calvincrowe mentioned would be a good resource for you. I doubt you will find something to purchase that is already tried-and-true at the necessary levels within your budget AND meeting age/resale requirements, but maybe a lease. I cannot recommend any horses personally, especially since you are purchasing with the intent to sell once you’re done with it anyway. Do none of your trainers have the necessary connections to check with the upper-end people mentioned? Most leases on upper level horses are going to come through personal connections rather than ads, from what I’ve seen!

I might be able to get you in with Dennis or Tague if you can supply ribs.
Ribs I got.

If you want to see the rest of the OTTBs that are for sale with Sorry Pal check out this photo album. Not all fit your criteria, but there are a few who might!
Thoroughbred Showcase
A couple of those look nice! And a nice, user-friendly presentation. You see what you need to of each horse.

Emerald Downs’ season is ending soon, so I need to get up there sooner rather than later for these OTTBs? Is that right?

I’m just down the road from Lervicks. They do indeed have very nice horses. I wish I knew any thing about dressage horses - I want in the BBQ whoring… Or sauce.
Seriously, you guys, I have 8 jars. I could leave a huge trail of sugar-free BBQ sauce up and down I-5 and there’d be enough for everyone.

With respect to “what counts as a dressage horse?”, my criteria for this “starter horse” is three pure gaits. I need an uphill canter. A pretty trot you want to watch is a bonus, but the trot can be improved more than the canter. The horse should want to go forward (as opposed to the on-the-quiet-side horse I’d look for as a hunter prospect).

Looking at this horse, you’ll see balance and perhaps, if you had to choose, a neck set on a tad more vertical rather than horizontal. In all the horses I like, I see a big hip and a tendency to put muscle on the top line.

Again, my goal is to teach me and horse to do some correct dressage at least to 3rd level and to do well enough at that that I earn the scores I need for a Bronze Medal. If horse and I want to/can keep going, great. If not, I’d like it to be a useful horse I could sell on to someone else who wants to learn dressage. This horse doesn’t have to have upper-level potential.

So don’t be afraid of a horse that doesn’t already dress exclusively in black tack and spotless white linens. There could be a freakishly-great moving Appendix QH standing out in a field somewhere who could do this job just fine.

As I understand it, people with goods/services to sell can reply to a request for same. They just can’t pretend to do that and plug their stuff. But report this thread to the mods if you like and let them adjudicate. Honest to God, my motives were pure and suitable for COTH, I think: I can’t find what I want so I’m asking for leads.

I do have a pro I have known for 25 years who will help me. She’s not local to me. I have another person locally who does give me lessons. Of course those people are looking, too, but the buck stops with me. I’m the one who wants the horse, so chances are that no one will work harder on this project than I will.

I know there is a larger dressage scene up around portland. I’m just not part of that yet, so I don’t know which of the people up there I’d choose as a trainer or an agent. My personal preference is to not have my first piece of business with a would-be trainer be having them find a horse for me. I’d rather get to know them as a trainer, instructor and business person first.

In any case, I don’t want this thread to violate COTH rules, so if I have done things wrong, or you guys have advice for getting it back on track, let me know.

Oh, mvp, I also forgot to mention Terrie Hook, she is an eventer mostly but if you want contact info just PM (or message her through Facebook, she is on my friends list).

On the off chance that you would be willing to consider a young’un and more of a long term partnership/investment, I happen to know of a VERY, very, very nice yearling (well, coming up on long yearling, he’d be two in spring) Oldenburg gelding for sale at an unbelievable price. Within a stone’s throw or so from you.

ETA: Also not quite within your parameters, but worthy of an exception - there is a very well bred, branded WB mare for sale up near me for a steal (even more of a steal than the above mentioned). Started under saddle but not “broke”, as it were.

Can you tell I mostly exist in the cheap(er) horse market?

Stephanie at Meadowgate Farm in Stanwood is probably worth a call. A friend of mine rides with her. She might not have anything for sale but she likely knows of prospects in the area.

I mostly know of reiners or trail horses. None of which (aside from my reiner) jump to mind as being built in height or conformation as a dressage prospect.

I can’t help you but I just wanted to say hi to all the fellow PNW people!

Enjoy your I-5 trip and share with us if you find the steed you seek!

I don’t know how much she’s got going on in sales horses right now, but Hannah Knaebel is someone that often has an inside line on nice dressage horses. It would certainly be worth giving her a call (http://www.toplinesporthorse.com).

Also, Rebecca Black on Bainbridge (http://www.iosranch.com/contact-ios.html).

More important than whether either of them have “the” horse for you right now, they’re well-networked and I trust both of them (which, you know, doesn’t come easily!).

Good luck and like all of the others have commented, swing by if you’re on the peninsula for some odd reason

If you don’t object to my not pledging to keep this horse fo-evah, will you hook me up with contact information for the backed-not-broke one?

I’m up for a steal of a deal which will, of course, be more money for the better horse. I don’t have a solution to the “yearling” problem (no foal pasture). But really, that’s the only major obstacle. Do you have a well-run baby farm up your sleeve? The one I used some 20 years ago is down in California.

In any case, friends at home, I’m aiming for Tues and Wed, or Wed and Thurs of next week. I’m packing up the BBQ sauce right now….

Sent you a pm.

I have no personal ties to the horse, but I can tell you where to find the ad. I was afraid she’d already been sold, but the ad was updated a few days ago (with yet another, cheaper, price). There is no video, only pictures, and I’m guessing this is the sort of ‘if you want more info, come out and look’ deal. It sounds like time is of the essence, here, so if you’re truly interested I’d suggest calling ASAP before somebody else snatches her up.

The yearling goes out in a regular (somewhat rundown, in terms of fencing) pasture with adults (broodies, to be specific), so I don’t really think “foal pasture” or “baby farm” are necessary in his case. They put a really good start on them as far as ground manners and he should be good to tie, clip, bathe, load, etc. Mostly just needs to hang out for a year or two. Heck, I’d let him hang out with my old man for a year, he’s a great babysitter.
