Poulin Grains...Any Experiences With This Brand?

Hi All-
Did a search, but came up empty handed. Looking for any experiences, good or bad, with Poulin grains. Would love to hear opinions from those that have tried it…it’s a new manufacturer for me, as I have always fed Purina, but am considering Poulin if it appears to be favorable. Thanks.

I have fed Poulin for a couple years. Mostly the MVP vitamin pellet and forage extender pellets. Have been very happy with the MVP … my fat haflinger needs no grain, but always has great hair quality when on the MVP. My Poulin dealer runs free hay analysis and their nutritionist will suggest a balanced program if you desire.

I will look forward to reading other replies…

Thanks for the response. I know that the Triple Crown feed line is well thought of on this forum…so I wonder how the Poulin would fare against Triple Crown in quality? Just thinking out loud…

I much prefer Poulin over Triple Crown and Blue Seal myself.

Thanks for responding. Blue Seal isn’t on my list of favorites either, but would you mind explaining why you prefer Poulin over TC? I have access to both in my area, just want to sort through my options at this time. Thanks.

This, and it really could not be farther from the low-level stuff that Purina puts out.

Poulin puts out a high quality product, and I certainly would not hesitate to recommend them. I too use the MVP for my easy-keeper, and my TB is on their new Fibermax that came out earlier this year, and doing fantastic. They are not the cheapest grain out there, but I feel like they are reasonable for what they offer.

Thank you…I am glad to hear that it is considered to be of high quality.

I’ve been feeding Poulin for the last 7 years. Right now the MVP to my 7 yr old and 2 yr old and the E-Tec to my 30 yr old (all Morgans). I’ve also used the Carb-Safe in the past.
I’m very happy with the results. I think the company is leading in research and they are on top of equine nutrition.

Another reason I feed it is they are a VT company…and I “buy Vermont first”!!

I’ve boarded at several stables that fed Poulin and my TB pony did very well on it. I would feed Poulin at home as well, but it’s harder for me to pick up on my own and I don’t have enough horses to warrant deliveries

Ditto. Superior to Triple Crown, which itself is a pretty darn good feed.

Great, thank you to all that have given input. It’s the Carb Safe that I am actually interested in. Had my gelding on Strategy for 2 years, and while his body condition was great, his mental condition was not. I am looking to rein in his protein and fat content…along with more control of the sugars within his feed.

Took him off the Strategy about 3 months ago, and gave him Hay Stretchers as a carrier for his supplements…he has done so much better with this approach. He has access to some pasture, and is supplemented with plenty of hay. As the seasons begin to change, I am researching my grain options…Northeast Winters can be brutal and I am looking to add an appropriate grain to his diet as the weather changes.

You will be very happy with the Carb Safe. It’s a great product and many horses in my barn are on it.

Poulin is a very good company. Very reputable and honest with good research behind their feed. Top quality all the way.

Thank you…that is great to know, Mary.

I agree! I use the MVP for my easy keepers and Fibermax for my TB. I LOVE their grain!

I used to use Poulin and switched to Triple Crown only because I couldn’t stand the smell of a couple of their products (Carb Safe and hay extender).

My horses loved it and looked great on it.

It’s the only reason I switched (I love scooping theg rain and want to enjoy the experience).

My horses are doing great on Triple Crown as well and I can tolerate the smell of their feeds better.

What an odd reason to switch feeds…truly. I would never consider switching an animals food because I “couldnt stand the smell”…very strange:eek:

To those that have experience feeding the Carb Safe, did you notice any behavioral issue when feeding it…such as nervousness, spookiness, difficult to handle, etc. While on the Carb Safe? Thanks.

None whatsoever. The opposite, actually. Most horses became LESS spooky and/or difficult. Less carb=less useless energy, I believe.

I happen to agree, Mary. I did receive an email from a Poulin representative stating that the low carb grain could cause spookiness, etc. I believe he mis-spoke, as I happen to believe the opposite to be true. Thanks. Going to let this thread die out now…

I started with Poulin when they first got into horse feed.
I didn’t like all the changes, and when they started adding flavoring, thats when I stopped feeding it. I don’t like smelling it, but I really don’t like feeding flavored foods, for myself or my horses!
I do feed the carb safe to one horse, and she hasn’t been spooky on it.

I honestly prefer tc, especially tc senior.

I think another factor to consider is the frequency of ordering. My local feed store pushes the poulin(and they get a better price break too which is a good motiavator).
Their deliveries are quite often.
The triple crown deliveries are every other month. Too many times the tc grain was just too old.

I travel to purchase the blue seal knock off of the tc senior. Not totally happy but I prefer it to any of the poulin products.

MVP and E tec are the best poulin products, but I am also trying to move away from pellets.
