PRE dressage stallions?

I have a Han. mare that I am contemplating breeding as her riding career is not going anywhere due to a flareup of an old injury. Thought about a Han. stallion or GOV but what I really want is a super PRE stallion, tall, that is or has produced FEI level horses, sound, good temperament, tall! I know it’s a long list but I am not that versed in the PRE community. Can anyone give some suggestions or maybe point me in the right direction? Would prefer fresh for this season but could do Frozen as well.

Thanks!

Gaucho III is one of the not so many PRE in NA, that has quite a bunch of FEI progeny. Not sure, how well he crosses with warmbloods, though.
Mare would need enough length and well set on neck, not short framed.

I’d shoot Kim Boyer at Hampton Green an email. Their stallions don’t stand to outside mares, but I think she is importing semen from Grandioso III’s full brother Grandioso VII for sale. Here’s the link: http://www.hamptongreenfarm.com/PRE-horses-for-the-first-time-hgf-offers-breeding-services-en-281.html
I’m sure she can point you in the right direction as far as other PRE stallions as well.

You could try contacting Jorge Gabriel of Casa Lusitana in Massachusetts (and Florida as well). Obviously he works with Lusitanos and not PRE’s , but he really, really knows his stuff with the Iberians. He actually rides his own Lusitano stallion at GP. No idea if he stands him at stud, but he probably knows of some top notch stallions that do.

Not sure if there is frozen semen still available, but Fugitivo XII was fabulous. Died way too young :frowning:

Looks like Jorge Gabriel does have some experience with Warmblood x Lusitano crosses. This one was posted on his Facebook page. I wish he’d listed the pedigree though…

Hello,

I would recommend more a Lusitano stallion than a PRE. PRE is a heavier, less functional breed than his cousin the Lusitano. In the WBFSH studbook rankings we can also see that Lusitanos are excelling more in international dressage than PRE.

The #1 Lusitano in dressage, Rubi, is currently available for breeding, and in fact has been used in warmblood mares.

I would also suggest the Villa Do Retiro stallions, a brazilian stud farm that breeds some of the best horses and had a stallion in the olympics named Relampago do Retiro, who died. They have many fabulous stallions.

A very important portuguese stud farm named Ortigão Costa breed their best lusitano mares to Totilas.

Absolutely gorgeous stallion in Rubi – but is there proven frozen semen available? It looks like he is in Portugal? If so, is there frozen semen that can be shipped to The US? (all counties have different protocols)

Again-- gorgeous! But can they breed mares residing in the US via frozen? There really would be no other option.

THIS I find SO fascinating! Do you know if any foals are already on the ground? I’m SURE I’m not the only person on this forum who would be VERY interested in seeeing the results of such a pairing!

I am not so sure about Rubi (yes he is in Portugal), I am not from the US but I have seen products of him in Mexico, Brazil and even Australia, so I do believe the frozen is good. Here is the contact for Team Rubi, they provide an e-mail for inquiries about frozen semen: https://www.facebook.com/pages/TEAM-RUBI/100149230035742?id=100149230035742&sk=info

Do Retiro is a very big breeding facility for the breed, with products from their stallions all over the world. I am sure they have frozen available for the US. They may even have a representative there, as they have in Germany, France and Mexico.

The first Totilas x Lusitano was born a little over a year ago!

There is also a breeder from Mexico that moved to Houston some years ago (I own one of their former stallions) that could also be a good option over there if the others fail to provide frozen. Their name is Haras dos Cavaleiros.

And another one in Mexico that I know have frozen for the US and have excellent horses:

Dominante XXIX or Genio MAC

Not sure if he is still standing, but I was at a barn with Lavrador long ago. Gorgeous horse and fun offspring.

What about Espiritu?

Rociero XV - was at the US Olympic Dressage Trials. Last I saw he was in California near Auburn.

This guy is the COOLEST; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8oq3Jo4cKw
He’s in the USA now but he’s not promoted very well;

Botijo M is currently competing at Grand Prix. I am not affiliated with him or his owner but my mother has his maternal half sister (PRE mare) and I have a stunning daughter of his. After trying her hand at eventing, she is now successfully showing Second level and preparing to go Third later this month. She is out of a Thoroughbred mare and has the TB athleticism but is very much like her father in dressage ability, just less baroque. My coach thinks she will easily go Fourth and likely at least PSG. Not bad considering I am an event rider! Have a look at him!

I second Equibrit’s endorsement of Festivo MR. He is stunning, not grey, tall, great temperament, tall, won the stallion class at Dressage at Devon last year, available fresh, and did I mention tall?

I cannot say enough about the PRE temperament, and this guy is a prime example of it. Festivo hung out at the warm up rail for most of the breed show last year with his back foot cocked, just checking out the sights. But he sure knew when to turn on in the arena!

The temperament seems to be pretty universal for the breed. I have a very hard time remembering that my little PRE mare is only four. Now that she has been a few places, it is all pretty hum drum for her.

The Lusitano is the way to go. FWIW I did inquire about the Do Retiro stallions a few times and never got a response…super nice dressage types though! Rubi will be available next year through Superior Equine Sires.

Saphiro may be of interest? We have a Lusitano gelding from him that is extremely talented, super temperament, amazing to ride.

Faralay, hands down at Ketcham Ranch. The movement of his offspring in second to none. Even Gaucho and the are very modern and athletic.
