Glad to hear it.
Thanks everyone!
Fun to see a Maryland bred Coffewithchris. Sold for about 2000 as a yearling. Out of curiosity I checked the mare line and the mare line has been held by the same human family connections for many horse generations which is cool. Outflanker is the brood mare sire and is still alive at Shamrock Farm . He is about 30 now.
I am old enough to remember when BeeBeeBee won. So local upsets are possible.
A friend got married on Belmont day years ago (Tabasco Cat). At one corner of the room during her reception she had a small TV tuned into coverage of the Belmont. There was a crowd of horse vets and others (Gainesville/Ocala area) clustered around said TV watching the race while the rest of the celebration went on.
DH’s best friend had a major birthday party in Queens, NY on Belmont day–Justify’s. Not only a Belmont, but a Triple Crown on the line. (Yes, I know, I know, Baffert, but still…)
I left the party and went to a nearby bar to watch.
I remember a local horse who trailered in and won the Preakness…was it Summer Squall???
Maybe Bill Boniface’s horse-Deputy Testimony?
Weird field but here it is.
No Disarm?
Oh, they’ve decided to run him in the Jim Dandy and Travers.
Bee Bee Bee winning the Preakness is my first horse racing memory (California kid watching on TV.) How can you forget that name?
Wow. Weird is correct.
Only 8? And only one KD starter?
Yep. The first time since the 60’s that there is only one derby starter in the Preakness.
I kinda like it. I’m over the whole triple crown promotion. I think it’s amazing when horses run all three but it seems to me, people think it’s an actual thing. Like a playoff bracket.
I’m surprised it happened in the 60s!
Oh wait I said that wrong. I heard them talking about it and the 60’s today but actually they said since they have had the current spacing between the three races which started in 1969 there has never been just one Derby horse in the Preakness.
It seems to me that when there is a really dominate Derby winner that not a lot of also rans want to take another crack at him two weeks later but I don’t think that is the cause this year.
I wonder how the TV commentators are going to put on the spin to make the event exciting for the general public. There is still a Triple Crown on the line in Mage and his connections are a feel-good story.
There is more to life than the Derby, I think there is plenty to talk about. Hopefully it’s a beautiful day and they all come back safely and my beloved Pimlico shines like the star she is. Pimlico is once again in danger if being lost forever.
For the non-horse people, of which I know many, if you ask them to name three races they will reply, “The Kentucky Derby and the other two”. Maybe the Breeder’s Cup.
For those of us who love horses and racing, the Preakness at Pimlico is always a joy.
