Preakness is today! How do you think it will go?

“Casse dispelled concerns Sunday morning over his colt’s soundness levels following the race, and reminded the press of his neurologically related gait abnormality known as stringhalt.

“He’s got stringhalt," the trainer said. "I’ve trained a lot of horses that have had it. A lot of harness horses have it. He has a kind of funny action behind. It can be there for a couple days and it can go away. I thought after the race it exaggerated it a little more, but by the next morning he was fine.”

Thanks Cammie and Mr. Casse for validating that I really did see something and am not just an obsessively over-reactive horse person.

Fascinating. I stand corrected.

I sincerely hope this is a misprint.
Research into stringhalt has generally proven inconclusive. Some cases can be caused by toxicity, but others seemingly develop overnight. Treatments are varied, but most veterinarians agree that mild cases are a major cause for concern.
Where’sMyWhite: You wondered why I used the word “cruel” to describe what happened to WoW in the Derby. You thought it was inaccurate because no person did harm to the horse. I was using the world “cruel” in the sense of the expression “cruel fate.” I’m so glad he had a clear shot at the race in the Preakness and went on to win.

So that’s what string halt looks like? I never saw it before until WoW took those few odd steps.

I chose to back Improbable before the race because of Baffert and Smith, but looking back on seeing him lose in the Arkansas Derby, I’m just not sure he has the will to win. Before the Preakness Baffert was quoted as saying in an ordinary situation he would never run a horse in a Classic race who has lost his last three races. I think the announcer had it right who describe that usually Baffert’s horses ran to win because it was fun! Justify certainly seemed to be enjoying himself winning the Triple Crown as did AP!

I’m looking forward to the Belmont. May all go well and horses and riders be safe.

Guess I would take that with a grain of salt.

I’ve known quite a few OTTB with stringhalt, some case worse than others, that have gone on to be successful in eventing/jumping & barrel racing. None ever had issues due to it.

It’s not the bid deal you are making it out to be. The faster they go, the less obvious it is.

I knew a horse with stringhalt in the stable where I started lessons as a kid. He was the best jumper in the barn.

I’m sure that is a typo and the article meant “are NOT a major cause for concern.”

Yes, it was a typo. Here’s the corrected article:

Fascinating to hear that no toilets worked when I in fact used a flushing toilet immediately after the big race  and over the course of the weekend used working toilets in the clubhouse and grandstand. Women’s ones at that!

I did notice WOWs funny movement, stringhalt makes sense.

Mark Casse says string halt has never been a lameness issue for War of Will.
