Preventing saddle sores

I tend to get sores on the backside of my thigh, right at or below the crease of the buttcheek. Only on my right, so I know it’s at least partly a crooked-riding thing, and we’re working on that. Anti-friction products like Glide haven’t seemed to help much so far, so I think I’m going to need to start wearing boxer-brief type underwear or proactively put some kind of stick-on protective cover over the area. Like butt moleskin. Moleskin itself seems a little thick, and Tegaderm is a little expensive. Anybody know any specific products I could try? Specific brands of boxer-briefs for women? I don’t need or particularly want the super-long ones that are sold for people with thigh chafing issues under skirts and dresses. I also have stress incontinence issues from time to time while riding, so an underwear product that includes light protection would be ideal, but using typical pads has been working so far.

It sounds like the seat of your saddle is just plain too wide for you. Try a couple others to compare. If you want to keep it, try a (real) sheepskin cover from Fleeceworks. They offer protection without too much thickness.

What kind of pants are you riding in? Do they contribute to the problem?

I find a good fitting pair of full seat breeches the best for riding. And if I start riding western I might get those boot cut full seat pants gaited horse folk wear, which could mimic jeans without inseams.

However if the full seat is wrinkling that could be a problem too.

I’ve ridden in a bunch of different saddles over the years, the jump saddle I have now is by far the most comfortable and secure while I’m riding. I don’t usually even notice the rub until I get off. I get the same rub in only a very slightly different place in a dressage saddle I borrow that overall doesn’t feel anywhere near as comfortable, and of course the leg position is totally different. Since it comes up consistently at the underwear line, I’m not sure that a saddle cover is going to effect anything taking place under my riding tights. It’s not like the stirrup leather rubs or buckle bruises I’ve gotten from other saddles where it’s clearly associated with the tack. Worth a try if changing my lingerie choices or adding in an anti-friction layer under them doesn’t help, though.

I have a couple different pairs of riding tights and one pair of proper breeches. One of them’s full-seat, they all fit well with no wrinkling or bunching I’ve ever noticed. I get the same rub with all of them. The biggest difference I see is if I’ve been in a lesson where we’ve really be working on flexion and use of seat and leg cues to achieve bend, as opposed to me just riding more casually, working on transitions within and between gaits without flexion, etc. Working on that really brings out my crooked ways, which are improving, but still literally a pain in my …

You may find softball sliding underwear more comfortable than the boy short or boxer type of underwear.

I ordered some lady boxers from TomboyX at Christmas. I don’t get chafing but horrible front wedgies when I ride in regular underwear. They are pricy but soo comfy and I don’t have to peel my underwear off my cervix after I ride.

You may find that one side of you is larger/smaller than the other, and that side is somehow rubbing the edge of the saddle seat, resulting in the sore. For me, its my left side (foot in 1/4 size bigger than right, thigh is bigger, leg is a smidge longer, etc.). If you have a sewing measuring tape it would be easy to tell.

As far as protecting your tookus, how about applying some Kinesiology (KT/Sports) Tape? Its thinner than moleskin and probably easier to remove when directly applied to skin - and it comes is all sorts of fun colors and patterns!

I got sores like that one time when I attended a dressage camp. I ended up going commando—nothing under the breeches. Poor butt wasn’t used to that much riding. And yes-my saddle was too wide (old Albion).
These days there are a lot more “performance” fabrics. Some women wear thongs…I would rather go without.

I found out over the years that the right type of underwear is essential… I wear.boyshorts and never ever any underwear with laces… the seams need to be very plain…

Are there any specific brands you’ve liked best?

I do like Calvin Klein a lot. They are pretty sturdy and there was also a Hanes Boyshort which I liked… But I wasn’t able to find them anymore… so now I mainly use CK. But only the cotton ones… There is no way I ride in Polyester or Nylon ones…

Oh if its at the underwear line you need new underwear.

I like the boyshort idea except that every pair of boyshorts I’ve ever had has complex seams through the crotch. They aren’t comfortable riding.

My current go to is Jockey brand cotton full briefs, with the logo waistbands, which could be called granny pants. The leg elastics are fabric covered. I also find they stay in place and last a long time.

I definitely agree on the cotton undies for riding. I prefer Hanes cotton “high cut” style. I’m far too old to wear boyshort or any other style! I also wear their cotton underwire bras, so my bra and underwear match.

I am ancient as well  I switched only a couple of years ago, but it was worth it… and we have an outlet mall close by, so I try to get all the deals on CK… they are actually very good about deals… And CK got famous because of his underwear…
i like those, and I got them cheaper…https://www.calvinklein.us/en/womens-clothing/women-panties/logo-cotton-hipster-51703608

and try bringing your pubic bone on that side down to decrease the pressure on your seatbone, and if that seatbone is further back than the other, bring it forward. I had your problem (and ended up with cellulitis and an abscess , so it isn’t anything to joke about!)
What a pain in the a$$ it was.

But I have no more saddle sores.

Some cheap ideas–

Medical tape or-- I’m not kidding-- duct tape applied to your rub area, loosely. Like, bend over to stretch the skin as much as is natural and slap on a strip of tape.

The medical tape will breathe a bit better. The duct tape will be cheaper and more delightfully redneck. You choose what suits you, LOL.

The thought behind these suggestions is that you only need two things, at bottom-- to reduce friction between your skin and whatever’s next to it (and so far, normal undies or butt-lube hasn’t worked); and you need that layer to last throughout a ride. Oh, and you want that layer to be thin and cheap since you’ll use it every ride.

What inspires this idea is the way duct tape has been a great solution for things like hock sores. In that case, all you were trying to do was keep the top layer of skin covered so that it wasn’t continuously abraded and could get a chance to heal. See? No padding, just reducing the friction co-efficient between unhealed skin and ground.

That said, I would try the duct tape get-up on more-or-less healed skin. And it is important that the duct tape is applied over the skin as stretched as it will be when you are in the saddle. So it will be stuck on, but holding small wrinkles when you are standing up.

Let me know if you are brave enough to try it! Heck, I’d try it on my own body, but I don’t get butt rubs, so I don’t know how valuable my data would be.

ETA: If this rub is right where the leg-hole-seam of your undies are then it’s obvious that your ass is being assaulted by that. You would do well to choose some of those boy shorts (as others have said) or some kind of biker-short design. Otherwise (or if you must have a seam there), the duct-tape solution seems relevant.

I recently started to get a similar rub, on the side with my weaker leg. I tended to lean toward my stronger leg, which made the seatbone of the weaker leg not sit on the saddle properly. I wear thongs, so it wasn’t the underwear, but the rub was at the same place as you describe.

Fore me, I think it was a combo of jeans and new roughout saddle (switching to western). I now wear breeches on a smooth leather saddle and it is not a problem. I am also concentrating on keeping that weaker leg against the saddle and down.

I love the duct tape solution, but I suspect the kinesiology tape is the best solution!

I wouldn’t do duct tape. I cannot imagine the pain of pulling it off skin that has been traumatized already!

Marks and Spencers Cotton bikini briefs–or the lycra no VPL ones–you can order them in multi-packs online and they arrive from the UK in about 24 hours… discovering this has been a god-send as I don’t get home that often any more to stock up

I have no idea why American underwear is so uncomfortable. The seams are always in the wrong places and they either ride up or chafe or are generally miserable. Maybe I just have an English-shaped rear-end… (Having said that, the bras here are really great!)
