Promise Update

Thought I’d start a new thread, as the other was getting a little long. Sorry it took so long, the clinic has a full house, all of which have to be examined before calls are started, and those creeps at my job are actually making me work this morning.

There is good news and there is not so good news.

Let’s start with the good first. There is poop!!! A nice pile, if a little soft, in her stall this morning. She is brighter and not depressed. Rectal exam shows no sign of the lump, so, hopefully that has been taken care of. There is also more soft manure in her intestine, another good sign.

Now, the not so good. Every time they feed her (very small amounts, at very wide time intervals), she has had a history of getting colicy. The hope is that it was because of the impaction and that will not be the case any more. However, the vet is a little concerned that, because of the feel of one section of intestine(still gassy and distended), very high up, there might be minor displacement up there (not the same type of displacement she suffered earlier, this is more intestine where it shouldn’t be). If this is the case, the only solution is to operate, and as you all know, the decision not to operate has already been made.

The next 24 to 48 hours will tell the story. I am so hoping that now that the impaction is gone she will be able to eat comfortably and that the word will be that she will simply stay at the clinic until she is eating and drinking normally.

If not, tomorrow or Friday will be decision day.

I hope that all of you are not sick to death of hearing about Promise. The knowledge that you are all behind me on this has been more help than you can know. I know I have said this before, but, let me repeat my heartfelt thanks.

Aha, so our collective “poop” thoughts helped!

I’m holding more good thoughts for Promise and her recovery. You’re such a great horse mom, Louise!

Sounds like she has crossed a major hurdle!! We will keep our thoughts with you both.
Keep pooping Promise!

Louise, don’t’cha think it’s time to post a picture of Promise?

It’s much easier to focus prayers on a picture

Oh, Louise, I’m so sorry to hear about Promise! Hopefully by now she’s well on the road to recovery- I’ll certainly be keeping the two of you in my thoughts and prayers.

“The poop, she is good!”

Promise came home to her own stall today. The salmonella culture proved negative, like we all were sure it would.

She is thin and boney – I think she looks great! I wouldn’t trade the sparkle that is back in her eye for anything.

The middle of last week, there was a night that I thought I was going to lose her. I had never seen her so depressed. But my little girl is a fighter, and she pulled herself through once again.

And, speaking of pulling through, I know that all those prayers and good thoughts helped Promise fight this. And, I know that all the words of encouragement that you had for me over the last week really helped me.

Thanks you all, from the bottom of my heart!

I must say, my stomach turned over and I was afraid to open this!

Come on, Promise! I am so glad she is looking better, that is a great sign.

Good luck again, Louise.

That is fantastic news, Louise, I am so glad for you.

YAY Promise!!!

Tell her you are looking into lots of yummy new food & drink for her… bet that will cheer her up!

Chester says “I love my Equine Senior, and you will too!”

My vet claims Endura Lite is the best electrolyte.

Good for her. All the virtual prayers seem to be working. Don’t ya love it!!!

Thanks for sharing the pictures again. What a cutie she is.

Many years ago Clownin’, my little hunter guy, ate half of his stall of straw at a show. Major compaction, walked him for about 18 hours through the night, etc, etc. When he finally pooped that next afternoon, we wanted to have the little poops bronzed. What thrills over POOP.

Hopefully she is out of the real woods now. Thanks for the update.

“The older I get, the better I used to be.”

Bet she’s glad to be back in her own “house” too!

Don’t get stuck in the sludge if you’re that confident in your ride!

We aren’t sick of hearing about Promise. It could be any one of us, reporting on our horse. We are here for you, and for Promise.

I’m glad to hear about the POOP! I am hoping, with all my heart, that she gets better.

C’mon, Promise!

Thinking happy poopy thoughts…

I hope she keeps on improving. I was hoping things were going well since I didn’t hear anything from you last night. Got fingers crossed that the soft poopy’s keep on coming and food doesn’t get her colicy again.

Whew… thanks for the update Louise!

Purina Equine Senior is pretty good stuff, although I am more fond of Seminole Senior, but as a southern food, I suspect that isn’t in your area.

If Agway (big in NY) makes a senior product, I have always had the highest respect for their other products I have used…

Still praying for Promise! Please keep us updated on how she’s doing. There can never be too many Promise updates!
