Proven (being the key word) Stallions

I’ve beaten this drum before, but here goes…AGAIN.

Everyone looking for stallions should be considering the older men first. Seeing the most recent thread on A Fine Romance makes me want to shake so many breeders out there. Don’t let this one get away. He has done so much more than most with his progeny. They perform…beautifully. He has so much to bring to the table - breed your mare to him before he’s gone.

For the real pony breeder breeding for performance - breed to Farnley Belshazzar. They really don’t get any better than that. He has had so many Champion progeny it’s not funny and their minds are amazing (I know, I’ve had seven of them). He’s old.

Another older proven pony stallion is Crossgates Larasan. Go look at the USEF year end results for proof. And, his get keep on being Champion. He is getting up there as well.

When I say proven, I don’t mean winning in hand. I like the “pretty ones” as much as the next person, but that meant absolutely nothing in the big picture. I mean winning among the elite in the show ring. That is what proven means to me.

Pedigrees that have proven performance in the pedigree are a pretty darn good way to ensure you’ll get a winner down the road.

Randee, I love you…but this is blatant advertising for Richard Taylor. You work for him don’t you?

I’m sorry, but there are a hundred pony hunter stallions out there who are PROVEN!

To name a few who are PROVEN and standing at stud:

Blue Rain
Rowfantina Gold Sovereign
Salvandi Jazzman
Brookside Pink Magnum
Blue Fox
Blue Who
*Telynau Royal Charter
*Telynau Royal Anthem
Loafers Lodge Spring Ahead
Gayfields Call The Cops
Maple Side Mr. Magic
Sugarbrook Blue Pacific
JLA Sir William
*Telynau Elgar
Pengwyn
Penrhyn Sporting Chance

…on and on and on

All of these stallions are on the USEF Leading Pony Hunter Sire List and all have PROVEN offspring competing over fences and winning.

Sorry to all of the wonderful PROVEN pony hunter stallions out there who I missed. You might as well log on here and add to the list…as apparently, some people aren’t aware that there are other PROVEN pony hunter stallion out there standing at stud!

Forgot to add…I truly believe young stallions like Land’s End Adagio, Blue Fox, Heavenly Final Revelation, etc. shouldn’t be overlooked. I’m confident they are going to have stellar offspring showing over fences and winning in the near future. They just haven’t had as much time to put a ton of offspring on the ground like some of the older stallions out there. That doesn’t mean they are any less of a stallion. I wouldn’t hesitate to breed to them in a second!

I bred to Blue Fox last year. So excited for my 1st foal this spring! Blue Fox’s oldest offspring are about 5 years old. Two of them qualified and placed at pony finals last year!

I also wanted to add that I am seriously considering breeding to one of the older proven stallions this year. Considering Larasan, Sporting Chance or Charter to name a few. I agree with Randee that I should try to use 'em before we lose 'em!

We have a *Telynau Royal Charter foal due in about 2 months and cannot wait. I’m confident it will end up being a stellar pony hunter prospect. His offspring are lovely!

Daventry, you have got to be kidding. Really? I am talking about OLDER stallions and to use them before they die. This is a thread about the elderly statesmen only.

There are maybe three or four at the most on your list that should be on the list.

And last I looked, A Fine Romance wasn’t owned or stood by Richard Taylor.

And NO, I don’t work for him. Is he a very close and personal friend? Yes.

I have helped you numerous times with contacts and other pony information about Sporting Chance and the other ponies Richard has had. I have many times suggested him (Sporting Chance) to others as I often suggest other stallions not owned by him (Richard - or previously owned by him like Sporting Chance was) to others if the stallion is a good match. You seem to overlook the fact that I only suggest what I consider a good fit for a mare. It’s not a novel idea.

I’m really surprised at your attitude.

I encourage everyone to post about an older stallion that fits this category.

Thank you very, very much for the kind words VirginiaBred.

I agree that there are some wonderful older stallions out there who may not be with us much longer, and that it is always good to get to them while there is still time, in particular if they are old and proven bloodlines, that may be becoming increasingly rare.

One fellow for example who does not get mentioned much, but who I like very much is the GP jumper Novalis…

disclaimer: VB does not work for me either.

Novalis is a neat horse Fred! Very underused!

I’d like to mention Special Memories, who is 26 this year! His owner posted a recent candid video of him on Facebook, full of vim and vigor. I have a 2yr old gelding by SM that shows tremendous potential for a variety of disciplines. His mother is no slouch either, but he is influenced by both parents.

A visit to Special Memories’ fan page on facebook will turn up lots of great horses, competing in Hunters, Jumpers, Eventing and more.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Special Memories is a great stallion; I would love to breed to him before he’s gone.

Novalis is also an interesting stallion; he certainly has the performance record. Personally, he does nothing for me in person: he looks kind of like an oversized pony. I have seen a few of his offspring, though, including one eventing in Ontario who is absolutely stunning; a real quality mare. I would certainly consider him for the right mare.

sixpound, thank you for mentioning Special Memories- what a grand horse he is.

Another stallion who I love, who is getting older, and who does not get a lot of attention is Concerto Grosso. He is one I would love to breed to too.

Thanks for posting the link to his pedigree,VB!
He has a lovely pedigree as well.

I’m breeding my only TB Cy daughter to Coconut Grove this year. I believe he’s 25 this year.

Another vote for coconut grove.

I’m also breeding my RPSI approved Trakehner mare (Heling/Malachit) to Coconut Grove. Although he is not as proven as some of the other stallions mentioned because of the relatively young age of his oldest offspring, the ones I have seen look promising.Very excited for that foal which will hopefully be an event prospect; probably one of the last opportunities to breed to this great older stallion!

Great thread, VB

Breeding my mare to Concerto Grosso this year, can’t wait to see this foal! SM is another favorite of mine. Also, Aberjack is older and definitely proven!

For older you have to think about Blue Rain, who has been the #1 Hunter Pony Breeding Stallion for so many years. I did not see him mentioned (or did I just not look properly). Not sure what he is doing now, but OMG…what a boy!!!
