Purebred Cat Found in the Colony

Amongst my usual crew of gutter punks (all spayed/neutered by yours truly) this pretty boy popped up.

He was wary, and when I first saw him on Monday I didn’t want to push it my trying to pet him since he looking a little overwhelmed. I tried to trap him on Tuesday night, but cats are gonna cat and I didn’t see him anywhere. I was WFH today and hear a meow out the window. I peek out and see Syrax, a newly neutered reformed bad boy herding this curl-eared boy right to my front door. I went outside and talked to them for a bit, and was able to pick him up with zero fuss. He is DEFINATELY someone’s pet.

He walked right into the carrier and I took him to my vet to get him scanned for a microchip. He was a a very good boy, and when we got there let the vet tech touch him and pet him. Surprisingly, he doesn’t have a chip. I took him to a second vet just to make super sure and yet - this sweet guy’s previous owners did not neuter him or chip him. :rage:

So now I’m at a crossroads.

  1. Our municipal shelter is absolute crap - and despite having a huge operating budget has multiple lawsuits against it for poor practices and neglect. If I drop him off there, I would hope that his fancy-ness would ensure a quick adoption.
  2. I could create "found pet’ listings on pawboost, nextdoor etc and require that people trying to claim him submit photos of him so I know that they are his people. Aside from dealing with the crazies on social media… I don’t really want this sweet guy going back to the people who refused to provide the basic service of neutering or chipping him. Call me jaded from having to deal with fixing so many other people’s pets, but If you are not a reputable breeder… FIX YOUR CATS! Since he was not chipped, I can only assume that he was not an escapee from a reputable breeder or a responsible owner.
  3. Every rescue is drowning in kittens since it is peak kitten season here. Since our crap animal shelter refuses to do TnR or offer low cost spay/neuter days - there are cats breeding like crazy. But my hope is his exoticness makes him a prime candidate for an adoption through a reputable rescue that would neuter and chip him before adopting him out.

DH says cat can stay until Saturday, but after that he goes to the shelter. What do you think cat people of Coth? Am I overestimating his worth as a purebred?

Whatever he is he is purely eye candy! What a sweet looking cat.

What breed is he? I am not real familiar with all the purebred breeds. I have only gotten rescue cats.

TIA, Susan

Might be worth seeing if there is an American Curl breeder in your general area. Even if he isn’t there’s, maybe they’ll have a soft spot and be willing to help place him.

same!! I think he is an American Curl Polydactyl or maybe a Highlander Cat with a long tail? These are purely my google guesses.

Breed rescue? I’m not really a “cat person” (family growing up didn’t like, then personal dogs over the years weren’t compatible) – but he certainly looks like a handsome fella! Were he a purebred dog, that’s the route I would take!

Wow he is stunning! Unfortunately, I already have 5 (gasp) cats who do not get along or I would steal him. Maybe he was being used as a stud cat and got outside or maybe somebody bought him with that intention until he started spraying in their house. And then they threw him out and he got disoriented and ran away.

Probably a BYB. Who else would let an entire male cat out to roam and expect it to stay home? It could have climbed up into a car or truck and taken a ride. But then again, he would have to be outside. You would think Somebody would be looking for him - maybe on FB or Petfinders.

He also could have gotten out at an age where it was reasonable for him to not be neutered and wandered really far, his family eventually moved, got dumped by an angry ex, etc. Lots of ways they get lost unfortunately.

This is what I am starting to suspect. I’m trying to figure out what breed he might be there are all kinds of exotic crosses out there of domestic cats x Bengal or Savanah or whatever. I had to stop myself from spiraling down into the dark world of exotic cat breed websites. Way too many shades of Tiger King for my liking.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone got him and tried to make money off of breeding him. There haven’t been any ‘lost cat’ ads for him on Petfinder or pawboost or my local sites. Its why I’m not keen on putting ads for him up on those sites and having creeps see his fancy breed and try to snag him and use him to make a buck.

contact Avalon Cat Sanctuary. They might know what he is and send you the right way.
Or even give him a home.

It looks like a Bengal crossed with an American curl. Maybe it is like my sister’s Bengal that would poop in the house when the family went on a trip. And maybe somebody decided it should be an outdoor cat. Hers was fixed and stayed home except in the wintertime when he adopted the neighbors because of their fireplace. Beautiful cat whatever it is.

Looks like a Highland Lynx cat…apparently a fairly new ‘breed’…their tails can vary from a bob to regular length…google search brings up lots of pictures that look very similar to the one in your pictures

His breeding really will not matter once he is neutered.

His uniqueness will get him adopted quickly, wherever he ends up. Even with out his funky curled ears, his coat pattern is very neat.

I think you should get him neutered quickly in case his owner shows up (ads or such).

I do want to say just how amazing you are to the local cats. They are so blessed to have you looking out for them!!!

I love this part of the story. Your colony wants to keep itself free of trouble makers and wanted to make sure the caretaker knew all about the new guy.

Oh yes! A Highlander/highland lynx or a Hibernian lynx is what he looks like.

Are those breeds typically born with out a tail or do humans crop their tails?

Edit to add - I see some photos with tails, so I guess they come both ways?

Yes he does! I smell eau de BYB myself. Wonder why nobody is searching for him.

And I don’t think breeders crop cat’s tails or at least I hope not.

Well. Look, he’s a grown man. If your DH wants to go to the shelter on Saturday then ok, that’s his decision. You’ll at least still have the beautiful kitty for company.

AGREED! Tell DH you’ll miss him, but you’ll try to come walk him a few times a week.

Besides, what’s one more very pretty kitty? (Says the person with 27 . . . last four kittens get fixed this coming month!!!)

My opinion is to talk DH into giving you more time to find either his original home or a new home. My heart says a new home that will keep inside and neuter him.

A Bengal is a cross of a Asian Leopard Cat and a domestic cat. He is probably a Bengal that a breeder created with an American Curl.
