Purebred Cat Found in the Colony

I will guess that OP’s BIL will not allow OP to dress him up like Uncle Milo, or work at a taco truck or ice cream shop but…more pictures please.

Well folks, Vash’s owner turned up. Tuesday night the Pawboost ‘lost pet flier’ was posted. We spent a lot of time ( too much probably) vacillating back and forth on if we keep the cat or return him to the person who is looking for him. Judging by the condition he was found in (intact, skinny, chipless, lots of scratches) we would undoubtedly take better care of him than the place he came from.

I told BiL that I would support him 100% on his choice. He already spent $$$ on a chip, vaccinations, tests and flea treatment. The neuter appointment was for this morning, so the choice had to be made before that.

BiL decided to reach out to the owner through the Pawboost ad and return the cat. I offered to do it or go with him, but he wanted to handle it alone. He was really torn up about it. Vash’s (real name Bobby) owner lives in the apartments down the street from us. As the lost cat add promised, a small reward was given which only covers about 1/2 of what BiL spent. They said that he normally wears a GPS collar, but had slipped :man_facepalming: it They also commented on how much better he looks. Well yeah lady, when you feed your cat properly they gain muscle and their coat improoves. BiL gave them instructions on how to change his chip to their contact info, and they showed interest in taking him to his neuter appointment. Who wants to take bets that they won’t take him to the vet?

In short, its a bummer. Realistically, we had the cat for less than a week, and he had an owner who was actively searching for him and worried. Is the owner a bit of a moron? yep. Will she let him out again in a high traffic area where cats get hit by cars and there are lots of feral cats sporting for a fight? yep. she sees nothing wrong with it. Would he have been better off staying with us? probably. But there are thousands of cats searching for homes and its not worth fighting over this one cat.

BiL is sad about it. I hope that maybe down the line he will be ready to love a different kitty, one that he can adopt and start from square 1 with, but for now he is definitely not interested.

Oh well. Good luck Bobby.

I would have not asked for the reward but I would have told her she had to pay the vet costs to get him back. And if he decides to come back to his better home - well you didn’t see him this time, but she can look on the side of the road to see if he has been hit by a car. But I am mean that way.

IF Vash shows up at the feral colony again…

An inexperienced owner with an intact male…it’s likely that he’ll be tossed out as soon as the spraying starts. It just takes one stray cat of any gender, outside, to create the spraying issue. Once outside, he will establish and expand his territory . I wonder if there really was a GPS collar, since there is no mention of tracking it. The good news is that he does have a home of sorts. My condolences to BIL. It sucks.

Amen to that. Not only does cat spray smell awful it is just about impossible to get rid of. Hansel, who was fixed at an early age, will still spray sometimes if a semi-feral male is trying to invade his territory. He doesn’t live inside though and is bad-ass enough that the stray males quickly leave his territory. But the spray, even outdoors, PEWWWWW! If Vash starts that up I bet he will be living outside again. Maybe she will get him neutered but I wouldn’t count on it.

Honestly, if he shows up again, I’d just get him neutered and then return. PM me and I’ll pay the costs if it comes down to that.

This! Totally this.

I am so sorry that your BIL went thru this and that this poor cat lost someone who clearly cared a great deal for him.

Damn.

If he turns up again, DO NOT contact the idiot owner. Just keep him. Tell them to go looking under cars for the cat they can’t freaking be bothered to take care of.
