Purses for leather snobs?

Just yesterday i was up on the third floor putting a new filter on the air conditioner and opened up one of my big plastic containers…right there on top was a pretty little DB pink/beige clutch. Grabbed it, cut off the strap and will attach it to my pretty blond mare’s saddle as a treat bag :slight_smile:s-l500

Just wanted to share in case it has not been added here yet… Pricey!! But droolworthy.

Sorry for reviving this thread. Does anyone have experience with Tumi bags?

I also found some on https://vonbaer.com/. Premium vegetable-tanned leather.

Do you think leather is worth it?

I saw this thread pop back up, and have noticed that Stackhouse saddles is making some gorgeous bags for clients to match their saddles! I mean, not that one is likely to be using both at the same time, but I’d probably go for it if I got a custom-made saddle with hand-picked accents.

I buy vintage Coach on www.shopgoodwill.com and restore them. I’m a sucker for the supple thick leather of the older bags.

Realizing this is an older thread, some of the earlier responses questioned the quality of the coach bags. I’ve been buying/receiving as gifts Coach bags for 20 years. I don’t find the vintage ones particularly better, but I will say that they have different lines. The patterned bags tend to be lower quality leather and often have faux leather straps. The solid colored bags are more likely to be better quality leather.

I had a Tucker Tweed and it did not hold up. Pretty but not worth the price. I like the Frye crossbody bags, I use a handbag for years before I replace them and my Frye is holding up after 8 years!

I bought a backpack from Portland Leather Goods and LOVE it! Their leather is really awesome, smells amazing, soft and supple - but I wish they designed bags with more pockets. Otherwise, the leather just can’t be beat.

I have a stockpile (like 40 or 50) of old coach and Dooney bags. I use them to death as saddlebags and also as treat/training bags. I use the big ones as containers for spare clothing in my pickup. I have one nice big Coach bag wrapped over the front bar on a walker so whenever i’m crippled (twisted ankle, knee swollen etc) i have somewhere to put stuff when i move about the house. I love all my good ole coach and dooney bags. Just.Love.Them!!!

Wow!! That has to be a record
I tend to wear my favorite bags until they can’t be salvaged anymore :sob:
I love thick and supple leather with lots of pockets inside and a few outside too, not too big but still room for a kindle on top of the usual things, and it has to look good and be able to be worn cross body ( bad back).
What I don’t like is the pocket dedicated to credit cards etc. waste of a good pocket as I keep those in my wallet!
I always keep an eye on Poshmark, eBay et al for old style Fossil bags that fit my requirements.

Well, i hoard bags. You know how some people have shoes and shoes and shoes, or folks here on COTH with saddle pads? That’s me. With a certain type of handbag. Thick supple buttery leather is key for me. i think i have some Fossils too

They are super useful and indestructible. I have an old Coach Tote that I use to bring stuff to the beach. My son’s girlfriend told me the battered look is very trendy and asked if I had just bought it. I have way too many purses (Dooney, too), but figure they are less expensive than saddles and scratch my itch for nice leather products.

I have an old Fossil that’s on its last legs. The new ones are junk though.

i’ve been irked by pleather a few times. It’s most annoying. I can forgive a lot of ills as long as the fabric is the real stuff. Coach bags are almost never disappointing. I have a couple of coach backpacks and they’re my go-to whenever i need a personal bag to carry. All my other bags serve some other use. My truck has probably six or 8 of big ones filled with change of clothing, hazmat suit, extra footwear and come winter, there will be more for coldweather emergency stuff. I really love a good leather bag. Esp large ones! But i like the little clutches to hook on my saddle for treats too. My palomino mare has a orangey-pink dooney on her saddle. Buckskin has a nice coach one on his.

Yes, that’s why I hunt for the older ones everywhere I can think of!

Another shout out for Dooney & Bourke. If you want your purse to have the “love at first quality feel” of an expensive saddle, gorgeous thick leather, and impeccable interior fabric, without an eyepopping price tag (like Fendi). About $300-600 range retail. Ebay can net you one for 1/2 to 1/4 of the price.
Dooney & Bourke Florentine Trim satchel handbag - 9-3-2024

Thanks to stalking this thread, I started seeing some ads from Portland Leather. Yesterday I gave in to the marketing and found a great tote on sale from $400 to $125 to replace the used and abused bag I’ve been dragging to work meetings on planes, trains, and automobiles for the past few years. Can’t wait for it to get here!

Dooney & Burke have outlet stores where you can find the bags for half price. They are like crack dealers…can’t leave without buying one.
