A certain aspiring male rider I know is convinced that any good male rider lacks testes. His belief is that there is no way to ride a horse without harming “the family jewels.” I disagree. But then I’m female. So any wisdom on this topic would be most appreciated.
This is a joke right?
There are countless male riders all over the world, in all sorts of disciplines, with children.
What about roping, any ranch work on horseback really… and I’m gonna throw bronco and bull riders in there too. Surely they haven’t all had their testicles removed, right?
Only the ‘cutters’ snip, snip
LOL… You’re not right, but you’re not wrong either.
I would say your male is not riding in a saddle comfortable for him.
Pretty amusing given that up until about 100 years ago, almost all riders were men. Cowboys, cavalry, fox hunters, knights in armor. It was women who were considered so “fragile” they had to ride sidesaddle.
Hmmmm… I wonder if saddles have evolved and are now more comfortable for women than men.
Given the femur length of most men, I’ve got to think most riding programs don’t have saddles anywhere near large enough, unless they’ve purposefully purchased for tall guys! Stuff a 6 foot plus, testicle carrying person into a 17" saddle, and I can understand why he’d think all male riders are castrated
Riding schools mainly teach children. Their saddles do tend to be smaller, to suit their major demographic. A too small saddle can be a torture device for the male’s family jewels.
Re-enactors of cavalry manage fine, maybe he should find a group so he can talk to other men about their particular problems riding.
Men have been successfully overcoming these problems for thousands of years, many who traveled hundreds of miles, rode all day, and greatly preferred riding a horse to walking on their own two feet.
Omg. I had a college trainer 30 some years ago that told me once “I can withdrawn my testicles in to my body cavity, like all good male rider”. He was German and said it with an accent. I LMFAO then and still smirk when I think about it.
My husband had this problem with (western) lesson saddles. We immediately went out and bought one to fit him
Just make sure your balls are in the right spot and don’t hit the saddle hard
I’m a woman, but I admit I sometimes look at the old equestrian statues from ancient Greece and Rome, when men rode without stirrups into battle or over entire continents on horseback, and am impressed by the balance they must have had to do so comfortably.
Well actually he has been riding in a bareback pad lately which probably doesn’t help when the horsey does a little spook. I keep telling him he needs to sit on his back pockets which he does most of the time.
Tell him he is an idiot and plenty of guys jump around rather well.
I advise my male students that a really good pair of high compression bicycle shorts worn as underwear is the solution to most of this problem.
When someone is learning to ride and bouncing in the saddle, there are still going to be uncomfortable moments, but the bike shorts will minimize the damage.
With hubby he seems to like a flatter saddle over a deep saddle. I like a deep saddle.
You can wear a supporter???
If your “racking” yourself, your not riding correcting. Lots of two point. A posting trot is just light seat and half seat. At the canter your in two point. Your not suppose to be hitting the saddle. Sitting trot comes from a tight connection between your butt and the saddle
