Rare old horse movies online. What you have found?.

You can download a copy of 1949 ‘Sand’ which is pretty hard to find anywhere at … https://ulozto.net/file/msAPLjmdX605/sand-1949-mp4

With the lockdown I guess we are all going a bit overboard with binge watching… Did you know that netflix has a series with Sam Elliot about a ranch?

Try the Horse With the Flying Tail. It’s on YouTube.

I’d like to see Run Appaloosa Run again. I only have vague memories of it. I’m hoping it will show up on Disney+ as well as some other old ones. They had Justin Morgan last I looked.

Secretariat Belmont Stakes 1973… just watching him win by 31 lengths

A while ago, someone here, I think, posted a link to the old Disney movie, The Horsemasters. I bookmarked it, but have never watched it, so can’t comment on the video quality or even if it’s the complete movie. But here’s the link:

Pharlap the 1983 movie - watched it over and over as a kid. I found it on Youtube.

The first half of The Moon Stallion is available on Youtube, albeit in weak quality. The uploader appears to have a few old horse films/TV episodes (pretty sure I recognized The Saddle Club), although many of the names are in Polish(?).

We just watched that last night; I had looked for it off and on for years before a FB friend (horseperson) shared that it was available on YouTube!

It’s actually more of a documentary - only about 45 minutes long (won the Oscar for Best Documentary), and it’s, um, “interesting” - training and horse care was definitely VERY different back then. And not in a good way.

It was cool to see Bert DeNemethy, William Steinkraus and The GEORGE! (my daughter’s reaction was “YUCK!”), all as young men, in their primes.

I am old enough to remember some of this, though didn’t know about Nautical until later (I was born in 57), but some of the early footage was fascinating - and I was astonished by it!

Apparently Nautical (AKA “Injun Joe”, very not PC) was quite a handful though quite an athlete, but I kept thinking (WRT behavior issues) ULCERS! Physical pain! Poor horse! and of course none of these things were even on the radar back then.

It was a very different time, and horses had to be stoic and tolerant.

Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit. Another Disney mid century offering with a simplistic but decent plot revolving around the Big Eq and amazing stunt work on drool worthy horses.

Its probably best remembered for the RV with the rollout viewing lounge and bar before everybody had fancy RVs. Fluff piece but entertaining and everybody is pretty.

Ha i love that Run Appaloosa Run movie, and THAT part when they raced down the hill - could give Man from Snowy River a pause. I rented it not too long ago - maybe from Netflex or Amazon prime. Sorry I can’t remember. Been ages since I saw Misty of Chincoteague.

It was his trailer with the pull out bar and TV… and what about adorable Kurt Russell trailering his sisters horse in a miniscule 2 seater MBG sportscar haha

Ahh, Annette, always willing to do another classic young person’s film.
Retrospectively In admire her work ethic at such a young age.

Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit! My ALL TIME FAVORITE (a true “classic” 😊❤️)

We have it on DVD and watch it as a family a few times a year when we need a pick me up; we can pretty much recite all the lines by heart.

In addition to the great and iconic scenes mentioned above, the scenes with Dean Jones (Fred) “helping” Helen tack up Aspy are hysterical.

Putting the saddle wayyyyy too far back and girthing it up, then trying to put the bit in the horse’s mouth by holding it up (with the bridle hanging down) and trying to get Aspy to “take it” 😂😂 (I always tease my DH that he is “doing a Dean Jones” when he helps me tack up at shows to save time - but he has gotten really adept at saddle placement; is still reluctant to try bridling, though 😂)

For those of us “of a certain age”, wood grain station wagons pulling horse trailers were standard, pickups more rare (we did it: Ford Galaxy then Ford LTD wagons), though a sports car would have been a little dicey…

😳

It would have been GREAT to have had a pull out bar with awning, but I would appreciate it a lot more now. As an eventer, beer in the cooler is standard for post ride celebration - though only if I don’t have super early ride times.

My favorite horse movie! I have it on DVD and still watch it about once/year.

Movie trivia:

The scene at Madison Square Gardens with all the clips of the horses competing in show jumping was filmed at the show. One of the competitors they show is Max Bonham, who was, way back then, the manager of the Battle Creek Hunt Club, which is where I learned to ride.

Oh, I will have to rewatch Horse with a Flying Tale! I have an old book titled The US Equestrian Team Book of Riding. In it is a section written by Hugh Riley about Nautical. He discusses the real story (not surprising that Disney took liberties to spice up the story) and his experience having the film crew following them around, waiting for a big win. He had the horse for many years until his death.

Miracle of the White Stallions…another old Disney creation…not so much rare, I guess. Haven’t checked to see if it’s on Disney+ yet. I still have it on DVD though.

There was an old movie about the coal mining ponies that I watched when I was a kid, but I don’t remember the name. I do remember something about a headless horse toy on wheels…and the kids trying to save the mining ponies, but one of the ponies running back into the mine right before it collapsed…about as traumatic of a watching experience as The Never Ending Story…lol…If someone remembers this movie, and actually remembers the name, holy moly…I’d be so excited to watch it again…lol.

Lightning, The White Stallion…so bad and cringe-worthy to watch now with the 27 different horses they use(maybe not 27, but A LOT…)…lol…but it brings back all the childhood feels. I probably check that movie out from our Library no less that 100 times.

In Pursuit of Honor is another hard one to watch…but a great, historical movie after the first part of it is over…again, maybe not ‘rare’ and not old, but I don’t hear people talking about it munch either.

International Velvet…yes, please.

ETA…totally missed the whole watch them online thing…sorry…I just got caught up in reminiscing about all the old great movies…

Thank you! This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I’ve look for it for years and haven’t been able to find it; never occurred to me to check YouTube.

I’m not sure but I think the name of that movie is “The Littlest Horse Thieves”

Thank you!! Totally looking that up tomorrow to see!! I vividly remember many scenes in the movie, so I’ll be able to figure out if it’s the one I’m thinking of.

You are welcome. I hope that’s it.
